  • A mistake and a new conundrum - What bike for me

    Hi fellow Xbhpians,

I never thought I would come back to this forum and ask this question. But destiny works otherwise. I'm back with the classic question - what bike?
Brief vitals - Height 5 ft 8.5 inches, weight 75 kgs. Age 29. Vehicles owned in past: Bajaj Boxer CT till 2007 and Pulsar 180 UG IV (2010 - 2011).
The mistake in the title of the post is one I regret most till day - the day I sold my Pulsar 180.

Background: I had been using my Pulsar to the fullest in my bachelor life. Had done a couple of trips covering Wayanad and Goa from Bangalore. However post marriage, I bought a Hyundai i10 in 2011 october. The months following that I saw my Pulsar usage drop drastically. Add on to the fact that, while Pulsar was a very good companion for long drives, I felt it was heavy in nature for short hauls. In fact, after driving my pulsar for a while, I used to take my friend's Victor and boy was I surprised at the lightness. I also had my share of falls in the Pulsar a few skidding and low speed drops may be because of my inability to traction the heavy bike. I'm not sure. But the fate was sealed when I fell with my Wife in Pillion at our parking basement. There was also this issue during the early days of my Pulsar that air was leaking out constantly from tyres and had to put the good fight for an elongated time to fix with the dealer. Ultimately, fit of rage, rash and add to that a bad decision - I finally sold my Pulsar UG IV 180 cc within 1.5 years of ownership. I did not miss it for a while to be honest, but of late, I'm getting the itch to get a 2 wheel machine in my garage to complement the i10 and a 2012 Dio my sister owns and uses. And the itch has taken a larger form due to spiralling petrol prices and the worst traffic I've ever faced in my life I have to negotiate daily. (ORR through BTM, silk board etc.).

Requirements: Here is where I'm torn. While the Pulsar entertained me with good power on tap, I did not like its rigid nature; It was not exactly flickable in traffic and neither it was a balanced top of the line handler in curves. Add to that I was always feeling heavy lugging the bike around. Now that I'm married, I'm not looking the bike from a road trip perspective. I would bank on the car for such needs; rather looking at an every day all round bike that I can use for commuting as well. All this kind of lead me to me choosing the Dream Yuga - an inexpensive vehicle to own and run. But my P180 experience rekindled the biker in me and is now urging to go beyond - maybe the CBR 250 R - this will give an exclusivity and of course all pluses of an affordable superbike ownership. Now my question is will going from a UG 4 P180 to a Dream Yuga make me unfulfilled in the long term? Or is it better to go for the 250 R which will quench my thirst for performance but comes at the cost of heaviness. From a budget perspective, I'm not too strict and I can accomodate both but I want to ensure I put the money on the right bike. And any bike I buy, I will never make the mistake of selling it again - I'm looking at an ownership time frame of 5-7 years. So xbhpians, I call your help once again to solve my conundrum.

Considering city usage and that you felt p180 as heavy, the duke200 or pulsar200NS would make more sense than cbr250, as they are light and easy to maneuver in city. They are good for long rides as well. Test ride before taking any decision.

      Good luck. Ride Safe.

First of all, downgrading from a bike with Disc brakes and fat tyre to one with drum brakes and cycle tyres is the most nightmarish feeling I have had when riding a motorcycle. We have a member who has done exactly that and his subsequent commuter bike ownership was not the most pleasant.

If you want to use the bike just as a city commuter, keep the minimum cap limit at 125cc at least so that you get the option of Disc Brakes (which I personally consider essential). Yes, they won't be as powerful as a P180, but they are no nonsense commuters at heart which are great for the city. *Some say* that a particular 125cc bike is more fun to ride than even a Pulsar 150!

If however you are unsatisfied by the lack of power/features in 125-150cc commuters and crave for more power than your previous bike, Pulsar 200NS and Duke 200 are your only options south of the CBR.

CBR250R is overkill in case you never intend to take it on the highways
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Totally agreed on this. I would even recommend you Suzuki GS150 R or lightweight but yet stylish & meeting your requirements too, Discover 125 ST.

From your post I came to few conclusions:
              1. Pillion comfort is not that important, For pillion or trip you will take your car.
              2. Petrol prices , so good average
              3. Handling should be light.
              4. City traffic.
              5. And you are open from 125cc to CBR 250r
              6. Looking for some power atleast same like P180.

In city normal choice should be any 150cc bike, as for touring you would prefer your car. If need arises even a 150cc bike would be sufficient for trips.
Look for Dazzler/CBZ/hunk/RTR 160...these all are with/out dual disc bikes. average is also good over 55kmpl.

If you really want to spend some bucks and buy a city bike then Duke is most prefferable bike in city with superb handling/braking/power etc...

NS200 won't be that great for a city commute, because it's real power and fun lies in higher RPMs.

People talk about D125ST to be super handling bike, But when I rode it I din't find anything extra in handling or braking comapre to other bikes!! But yes when you get a 125cc with mono shocks, petal disc brakes with good digital console then it's a good deal.

For city traffic, nothing beats FZ in zip zap through traffic, it has excellent handling with brakes and right amount of power and speed for city. But Yes it lacks at top end on highways. Now new FZs give 40+kmpl.

Think twice before buying any bike, because you already hold a car which is more better on tours with pillion.

INMO CBR 250 is strickly NO because in city that too in traffic any huge bikes like CBR will be a mess and where will you use the power or speed of it in city??

Re: A mistake and a new conundrum - What bike for me

CBR would go to waste if you aren't gonna use it for touring. I mean, it would make the bike very sad if you just rode it around in the city. But you say the biker in you is still alive. Seeing all this, I recommend:
1.RTR180ABS/160hyperedge - because it's VERY Flickable. And corners like a dream. Can give a decent mileage. And can be used both on the city and on the highway.
2.Duke 200 - very very light. Very very flickable. But it's missing an ABS. And the FE returned wouldn't be favorable in the city.
Won't bother with the 200ns because the duke is within your range if affordability.

Add Pulsar 135 to your list... If you can extend to Duke 200/CBR 150R then nothing like it.

                    Get a comfortable city bike

I would suggest following bikes for the following situation :

                    • Discover 125ST - instead of going for Dream Yuga, go with this package offering monoshock, petal disc, 13 BHP, good styling, decent handling, sporty feel seats(bcoz of its height), good mileage

                    • CBZ Extreme - better than most 150cc bikes discussed. U get HERO trust, decent power(14 BHP), good seats, easy handling, will never make you feel shortage of power, decent mileage

As you are eager of getting a Super Bike someday, investing 1.6-1.9 lakhs in CBR250 just to get the feeling of how Super Bikes may feel is totally wastage of only. Instead save the money and invest it in your Super bike.

Going on tour is not possible, I am not telling you cant go but freedom you got during your Bachelor period is not same as today. Get a bike which makes you happy and is comfortable in city riding, with a pillion. As you are keeping it for 5+ years, remember in future India Motor Cycle Scenario is going to change from below 200cc bikes to 400cc bikes(correct me if I am wrong).

                    And last thing,

A biker is known for its love, passion, feeling he get riding a bike.
Its not the Bike that makes a Biker, its a Biker who makes a Bike perfect

If you want the same or slightly better performance with lightweight then RTR180 ABS is the way to go. If you have more budget you can check out duke200. CBR250 is a overkill for your requirements as you want a good bike equal to or better than P180. P200NS is slightly tall and heavier than duke.

I also live in BTM, BG road area in bangalore, I can understand your plight of driving 4 wheeler in the traffic. I don't touch my 4 wheeler except for weekends or family outings. RTR180 (ABS), FZ, DUKE200 should be good for your requirements.
Riding 17.6 horses out of which 5 horses work in the city and other 12+ horses wake up after 6k rpm and run after 8k rpm
