  • Replacing my GS150R with which bike?

    Hello everyone,

The first time i bought my bike after extensive research i bought the Suzuki GS150R, well the bike has served me well over 50k kms in the past 2 years and i am pleased with it, but off late it has some engine work and constant niggles now and then and the visit to service station has become a pain. So i decided that it was time to look out for a new bike. While GS is really a value for money bike and the 6th gear is a boon since i daily drive about 100 kms to Gurgoan for my office.

    The requirement are as follows:

Engine Capacity - 150cc should do fine not interest in more
Gears : Will prefer 6th(since have it in gs but i don't think i can expect 6th in any bike considering my budget:P)
    Mileage : 50+
Service : Well i have not had much problems with suzuki ss, but after engine work the problems have magnified
Features : Well i will lay emphasis on a good engine since i need to drive the bike for 100kms everyday
Now important part budget : 75k+-2k
Currently bikes under consideration: Honda Unicorn, Honda dazzler, SZ-R and the other choices that you gr8 people can give (No Bajaj bike)

Well i am not looking for a gorgeous looking bike, even though i am 25 :P...but for me the purpose of niggle free travel is very important.

None of the bikes from your shortlist satisfy all your criteria apart from your own current bike.

The next cheapest bike with 6 gears is the Pulsar 200NS (a Bajaj bike). The next cheapest *non Bajaj* bike with 6 gears is the Yamaha R15 which costs almost 40-45k over your budget.

Your best option (since you are not looking for an upgrade) is to give your current bike a good service and replace all parts which are anywhere close to replacement (chain, sprocket, both tyres, filters, spark plug etc.). Switch to a good Fully Synthetic oil of the correct grade and your GS should serve you for a few more years for a lot less money spent than you would on a new bike.

Just a query: What 'engine work' have you gotten done? What are the 'magnified' problems that you are facing?
Newsflash: My current bike is a ~48k km old Bajaj bike and it hasn't needed any kind of 'engine work' which your supposedly 'Reliable Japanese' bike did.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

SZ-R is more of a city/part highway ride bike with milage factor of 45+ at very max. SZR feels light and doesnt vibrate but it starts feeling rough on gear changes after long rides, compared to Unicorn and Dazzler which have much smooth gear changes. These bikes again give mileage upto 40-50 only. Also Dazzler is pretty expensive to own. Honda spares are equally costly and many service centers are known not to properly show care to these bikes as they get a lot of activas and unicorns, they will usually change engine oil and wash the bike and return, many of my friends thus get their bikes serviced outside. I am much satisfied with Yamaha SVC compared to my old discover/ bajaj service, my next bike again would have to be an Yamaha for the build and ride quality it provides.

I think your best option is to maybe complete overhaul the bike and replace worn parts, but if its going to cost around 15K then a better deal would be to sell your old bike for a new Suzuki Gs150R again. It will be well worth it!

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

try to get the old bike repaired or else if you have to get a new bike go for the unicorn .

No offence but personally I feel shelling out extra cash just for a new looking bike without any performance upgrade is not a good idea .as Antz suggested get your bike overhauled ,change all the worn out parts and you should be good to go .

Dazzler is a better option from the three in your list.

shifting from gs150 to any of the bikes you mentioned or within 75k is useless..just get it overhauled from a proper reliable mechanic, max it may cost 7k(AFAIK) for a new bike experience so why waste money going for a new bike under same category, instead can use it for fuel for abt 2yrs since you travel 100km daily..

If you need a new bike in 150cc:Cbz extreme.Better power, mileage that unicorn.Hero spares cheaper too. Will not give 50+ consistently I think.
Get a good hero 100cc.Although it will be a downgrade might satisfy most of your requirement.

A 2 year old bike which was ridden 70 km / day consistently everyday is bound to have problems, especially if you dont take care of it. As per my calculation you should change engine oil every month!! I dont know how many times you did that.. Air filter, sparkplug etc every 3-4 months.. Failing to do so will spoil the best of engines of this world..
Do a complete overhaul.. and use it. Else buy any other bike and prepare for such a fate after 2 years. I would recommend the cheapest 150 cc bike you can lay your hands on.. I think its SZ.

Like everyone else said, get your current ride overhauled. Just don't visit the same mechanic though - find someone better from your city. I suggest you ask around and do some research in the Suzuki GS150R ownership thread.

In 75K range The only 6 gear vehicle available is GS150R..
So you are lest with some options which are..

                    1. Get existing vehicle repaired from a reputed mechanic
                    2.Get a New GS150R
                    3. Extend your budget by 20-25K for Pulsar 200NS. This bike is very good to ride in city and has loads of power , better handling and throttle response

Sad to see GS150R not making a great impact in 150cc segment, I thought GS150 will give tough competition for Unicorn models (hero n Honda) Decade old Fieros still rules roads beautifully, I still feel the GS engine will be great in long term....but with 6 gears it failed to impress in FE department.....b'cos I hear CBZ,Hunk consistently giving 50+ in city drive cycles, Unicorn is close as well. Achiever still class leading in FE department.

Here's out of the box suggestion, go for Achiever, be different pay less and save more ...get a test drive soon.... ( Almost 10K cheaper than Unicorn, with 3-5 kmpl more than all Unicorn clones, 50+ for sure in city drive)
