  • A perfect tourer/daily commute bike for me!! Stuck in a dilemma!

    Hi Guys,

I am a regular xbhp thread readeer but a rare poster .

As I am working, I am looking for a bike with a daily commute of 40 kms everyday including return journey.

Also, I love to travel so I keep travelling on weekends and I intend to travel on my bike. I had shortlisted p200ns but I had really bad experiences with this pulsars.

I am confused whether to go ahead and buy this bike. I can see issues cropping up in the bike like tuning issues, vibrations, etc.
I had a p150 2003 model. I absolutely hated the model for its bad handling, riding quality, maintenance issues etc. and even got myself hurt in (simple incidents where a normal braking caused the tyres to skid and me falling off my bike TWICE ) which made me pulsar-hater for life.

I sold it off some 4 months back at whatever price I got because frankly I wanted to get rid of that bike. I am looking to buy a new bike and had kept bajaj off my option. But now it looks like p200ns is best buy in the market for its price.

Only block is the name pulsar which is pulling me back and stopping me from buying the bike.

Can you guys help me out with other options??!! Need to buy a new bike in a month.

    MILEAGE: around 30kmpl
    HEIGHT: 5.11
Performance matters more than mileage. However, mileage shouldn't be too less also.

Never had been a Pulsar user, so canot commemt. But let me give the name of some of the best tourers in the country. Those would be Karizma, Karizma ZMR and Honda CBR250R. Karizma if your budget is below 1 lakh and CBR if you can stretch the buget.

No offence but seems like you are blaming the bike for your poor riding skills. All bikes will skid if you grab a handful of the bike's brakes plus it depends on the surface you are riding on. I've a couple of guys who still ride the first gen pulsar and are pretty satisfied with it for daily commute but obviously it wont match the P220 or the P200NS as the quality has much improved. For example, the only expense I spared for my bike in the last 2yrs was Rs.10 for the rev needle. Am totally satisfied with my bike..

The P200NS is a fine bike as you have already read everywhere, but personally suggest that you keep away from pulsar as you will always have that psychological barrier in your mind.
If you are looking for us to convince you to go for the Pulsar, we cant.

Like Sid85 said go for any of the Hero's or Honda's.. the best would be the CBR 250 if not then the Karizma. I wouldnt suggest the ZMR, as well go for the CBR.
        Regardless, Life shall go on.

If budget is not a constraint then CBR250 would be apt, you get to opt even for an ABS option too.
As you are mentioning P200NS, guess that you are looking for bike around a lakh.. P200NS is very good bike too, if you are very keen on touring then a faired bike makes more sense to protect you from wind blast. Only two options at that budget - P220 and the ZMR. As you are looking for that extra bit of performance, I'd suggest you P220, Its an excellent tourer at its price.
If you are still scared of skidding then an ABS bike makes good sense but the cheapest bike available is Apache180 ABS which is also around similar budget but considering your height is 5.11 it'll be tight fit for you and also its gearing is shorter which is more apt for city usage than highways. Do take a test ride of all n decide

Extend the budget and go for the cbr250. As you said you hate bajaj, And even if in near future you feel a little confident, avoid it. As mentioned earlier by yellowspunk, you'll have that psychology throughout your ownership.. If not, try zmr. I would recommend it above its younger brother. Reasons being the fairing, dual discs, better mileage, better console, etc, etc..
So first preference would be towards extending your budget and going for cbr. Else zmr. Else karizma-r.

Yes I accept poor bike riding skills at that moment! The thing is I used find no fault in my Pulsar when I used to ride. This mindset changed when I rode Stunner for the first time. The handling and kind of "balance" it provided, just made me realize that the Pulsar I own is not up to the mark.
Yes I Have a psychological block against Pulsars before I started looking for a new bike(had excluded in my list) but I have seen a lot of old pulsar owners switching to it and liking it. Hence I included it in my list.
CBR 250r yes! amazing bike! want to have it! But out of my budget

About Karizma ZMR...is it a good city bike too?? Because I would be using it for up-down to office.

BTW, No offence to Pulsar owners. I just had a bad experience with my bike

If you are looking for cbr as an option for city rides, then zmr is a bit better than that in cities. In certain threads, its been made clear that frequent gear shifts are needed in a cbr. But i cannot comment on the bike's handling as i have not ridden it in cities. But on the highways, its a different story altogether!! Speaking of zmr, in 2 yrs of my ownership, though majority of my travel route includes highway, i did have a fair amount of city rides. Till you get used with the fairing (implies to all faired bikes) you will experience difficulties in handling the bike. But when you get used to the bike, its just simple!! However, parking is a little difficult but can be managed. Thought about r15?

I guess you confused CBR 250R with its younger 150cc sibling. CBR 250R has ample torque to puddle around town and blast in the highway.

                  IMO, CBR 250R>ZMA/R>R15>CBR 150R>Fazer
Also, you may look in RE bikes. Not sure whether you'd love them or hate them.

Yeah?? My bad. Then the cbr 250 is anytime the right choice over the 150 apart from mileage and cost factor!!
TS: try increasing the budget. And totally agree with divya bro's order of preference

Bro, The first gen Pulsars werent great handlers and were too unstable(That was the reason, why people were blaming disc brakes for the accidents in the past, not knowing about the badly distributed body weight). But its improved leaps and bounds now. The P200NS is one of the best handles in India now. Do take a test ride. It will clear your mind. Within 1 lac budget, Its is the best commutourer you can get.
ZMR is good, but, comparatively I would say, ZMA is more practical and VFM.
                      Test ride, and decide.

Bro any reasons for zma being more VFM? I agree its cheaper but with approx 20k difference (when i bought my bike), i felt digi console, grs shocks, split handle/grab rails, fairing, oil cooled, fi, dual discs, sensors, and best mileage in 220cc class is more than worth the price difference. And you say zmr is not VFM?

Dude, I love ZMR as well. I was saying about practicality. The features such as "dual discs,Oil cooling, styling" are definitely welcome. But other luxury features, such as the Fi, aint that important (Difference of 1-2 kmpl max). So are the digi console, and the fairing(which lacks the Aerodynamic property anyways). Thats why, I said, ZMA is VFM.

Max people on xbhp have got 55kmpl. And am getting 45-50kmpl. 1 to 2kmpl difference? I do not think so. And ya i agree with you on the fairing part. No idea about it being aerodynamic or not but its far too bulky.

btw first test ride ns, p220 and r15 if the budget allows you..today's pulsars are generations ahead of the 1st gen in all the fields, if it wasn't why would it dominate 150cc and above segment for a decade and still going strong...if you service the bike at regular intervals even a china bike won't have any issues, its not the bike its the pple who maintain them decide its life...
