  • First bike < 80k : Apache RTR 160 (2012) or Dazzler ?

    Hi xBHPians,
I intend to buy a 150-160cc bike & expect to use it max 3-5years with budget upto 75-80k. I have narrowed down my search to either TVS Apache 160 2012 (performance) versus Honda Dazzler(efficiency) though I have a strong inclination towards TVS as I had previously owned a Scooty pep with more of an love-hate relation considering spares & repairs. Hope you could help clarify about both's ride comfort in city/highway, after-sales service & durability of both bike's engines & parts especially for the new Apache 160 (2012) as i intend to give my Scooty Pep in exchange for Apache RTR 160, to avail loyalty/exchange-cashback benefits though alot of my friends are against it and are saying TVS has not done a good job with the new line of Apache & it is supposed to be worse than previous though i doubt it as per my reading over xBHP where some members have said that the bike is lighter & better in both gearbox working & handling than previous and would also like to know whether Rear-Disc(RD) is better than Drum Brakes as i would like to opt for a balance between performance & economy as much as possible . Thank you

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Apache is a cut throat hooligan, it's primary purpose is performance, and the dazzler well, it's supposed to look exciting but has failed in that, but it carries the honda badge and with it the reliability and efficiency comes, having ridden both bikes i can say apache will be great for city riding , and good in maneuvering at tight spots as compared to the dazzler. I don't think it will be good for highway runs though, as the apache is known for its insane vibrations, high speeds at the highway will translate to a lot of vibrations on the rtr and so it will be a bit uncomfy, it all comes down to how much highway riding you have. As in the case of engine durability and reliability, it's the honda that comes at top, how ever you abuse it, it will hold on , that's a given.
Coming to rear break, i din't find the dazzler rear break to be something to brag about, but the apache has super kewl rear break, it's kind of a curse actually, more wheel locks, if you can learn to control the it then it can be super fun too.

Thanks Krishna for the reply, but i was hoping if you could elaborate more if possible as it seems TVS has done slight alterations in hopes of releasing something till they find something better or bigger to release as per what some people have been saying on some posts on xbhp,ie the new Apache 160 2012 feels slightly underpowered as TVS has chose to lower the acceleration to give a smoother gearbox & besides higher gear ratios though i am not much of a rider to be certain of it & indeed there's certainly no challenge to durability of Honda's engines which are amazing excellent though TVS vehicles aren't so bad unless you end up with a bad vehicle in the start itself which could happen with bajaj or hero as well. My only concern being the fact i could just give my Scooty pep ( which served me for 9 years despite some rough use due to my partial knowledge for bikes) for some concession over the price of Apache which is less hassle then giving it to Honda who might not give much concession over other company's vehicle. On a side-note, so would you recommend Rear Drum brake instead of Rear Disc brakes in the Apache 160 (2012)

How many km would you ride per day? How often would you take it on highways?
If you have any doubts about the 2012 apache, take a test ride. I'd say test ride RTR180 too. I don't think that the 2012 RTRs are underpowered.
To answer your question about the rear brakes, get the one with rear disc as drum tends to be PITA sometimes and disc helps more if your riding is aggressive.

I'm not aware of the new apache's being underpowered, i dint't get why the accelaration has to be compromised ot get a smoother gearbox, doesn't make sense. I would suggest you mention your daily travelling routine, which covers how much kms, is it city or highway, do you tour often or intend to tour often and all, then only we can give an informed option to you.
And do test ride both the bikes, as for brakes, i would any day go with the rear disk, if you feel inexperrienced, try to practise braking in an empty place and you'll slowely get used to it. Disc brakes are more helpful in tight spots as our fellow friend pointed out.

            Cheers

How many km would you ride per day?
Perferable between 27-31 kms in which i would also be travelling on highway for sometime & occasional trips

How often would you take it on highways?
Well, the Highway is part of my daily route & approx comprises of 2-5km stretch though i would most likely be riding in city for most part

For your kind of riding pattern, i think the Apache will serve good, the dazzler would do good ofcourse, but apache will make it more worthwhile. Just my opinion, test ride and decide mate.

Hi I also recently switched from scooty to Bike and my daily ride is 30km in city.
I own yamaha Sz-R which is cheaper 67k . Gives mileage in range of (40-50) . Comfortable Ride. Enough Low End For city use . Decent space for pillion . I am not sure about Highway cruising . Front disk brake is good enough and rare drum is decent . Many ppl complain about Stock TVS tyres .Hope u find infi usefull

                      First Bike. Budget 80k

I am planning to buy a bike, soon enough, before budget. My Budget is around 80k and am in Bangalore. I have never driven a bike and this will be my first time and first bike. Focus is on comfort for both pillion and driver and then mileage. I am 5'10" or 5'11". Since my office provides cab, it will mostly be used on weekends plus when i miss the cab. I had shortlisted these:

                      • Honda CB Unicorn - Pretty Old, like the looks, good mileage but its old.
                      • Dazzler - Better but now it is not being produced (Haiku Honda). Even if i find one, sourcing part can be a problem.
                      • RTR - Still not decided on 180 or 160. People say it vibrates a lot on high speeds, if it is so then whats the point of 180, 160 would suffice?
                      • Hunk - roomie doesnt like and wont let me buy. (he is the one who will bring bike home from showroom)

My heart was set on Dazzler but now RTR seems to be the logical choice. Now which RTR of the two or any other suggestions would be really appreciated?

                          Hi kapil_szr,
Thanks for the reply. Well initially i had first considered most 150-180cc bikes including Yamaha SZR, Honda unicorn, Bajaj Discover/pulsar,etc but the initial issue is that i want to sell my scooty as well & with my height at 5'8", the apache suits my frame & weight along with TVS loyalty program which allows me to just exchange my scooty for price deduction which is not the same with other manufacturers who may do the same citing different manufacturer's model. Though Yamaha SZR is really a good power commuter, some things like high cost for spares, possible mileage issues( Honda has similar issues as well) kinda threw me off though i am close to ultimately choosing to Apache as i always wanted to buy one & yes, TVS stock tires are not upto the mark & provide loose grip, thus i might request them to change the front & rear as per what members of Apache 160 bike owner's group say
A Bike is as good as it's Rider & Vice-verse. Ride Safe, Ride Happy !!!

Actually what Krishna has said is logical. It depends on what you are going to use the bike for. I think the question that the thread starter has is not "Should I buy RTR or Dazzler" the question is "Is there anything wrong in the new RTR cause my friends are saying its not good..."

Well has none of your friends asked you to not go for dazzler?? What do you want the bike for? If you want the bike for daily commuting then go for dazzler. If you want the bike for weekend fun then go for RTR.

                              hi plasmabhai,
Yup, one of my friends owns a dazzler & recommended the same for me though the thing was that Dazzler is facing some difficulty regarding productions & there could be a problem with spares despite it using Unicorn components & some mileage issues besides i kinda wanted to buy an Apache & with the TVS loyalty program, i get a 10-11k discount over the price which made me think about finally owning the Apache & well, as per what some xhpians have been saying about the new Apache 2012 is that it has smoother gearbox because of slightly less acceleration compared to previous bike and more like shorter gear ratios, etc though i guess if i ride well then even the apache could give me good mileage
