  • New or Pre-owned CBR 250?

I currently ride a Apache RTR Fi, looking for an upgrade. Considering my requirements(Daily commute to office- total- 30kms a day. City only), CBR 250 might be my best bet.
However, while looking at classifieds, started wondering if i should be picking a new one off the showroom @ 1.7L or check out the used bike section.

A search on few classifieds, took me to some bikes with mileage less than 10,000 kms and in the range 1.2L to 1.5L.

Now that i always check my options before a purchase, and since i have never ventured into pre-owned space, i am looking for advice on new vs pre-owned(less than 10k kms). Keeping in mind saving of 20k to 40k on pre-owned.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Points that i need to consider while looking for a pre-owned bike:
      1. Look for bikes bought on Jan-2012 or later. That way i would still be left with 1 year warranty. But need to know if the warranty is transferable or expires if owner is changed?
      2. My preference of color is Tri color >Red > Silver
      3. Full Service History. Again how do i check if the bike has never been involved in a accident? It would be very easy to hide the accident repair bills by the authorized service center or local mechanic.
      4. Registration should be of Hyderabad(Local) and seller has to be the first owner to avoid hassles of re-registration.
      5. Avoid areas like Abids, that are famous for bike tweaking. And avoid brokers
      6. First Preference: ABS version for 1.3L and Std. for Rs1.2L for excellent maintained CLEAN bikes. Is this reasonable?
      7. Insurance doesn't matter i guess, as it is non-transferable to new owner and i would need to get a new insurance on my own.
      8. Look for only Stock bikes.

Hope i am covering everything here. Please help add if i am missing anything on my checklist. CBR 250 owners, please add if i need to check anything specific with the bikes.

If you are paying anything above a lac, and you intend to own it for more than 3-4 years, it's always advisable to go for a new product. A used bike makes sense only if you are looking for something that has already been thrashed around a bit so that you won't mind thrashing it even further.
Complicated machines like the CBR can be f**ked up anywhere - and cleverly disguised. A short test-drive may not reveal anything at all. The owner may be screaming "STOCK!!!" at the top of his lungs but the engine could have been tampered with, air filters may have been played around with and lot more can be messed up before a local mechanic fixes everything back to stock for a few hundred bucks.

With a new vehicle, you can be sure that everything is untouched since the digital odometers are tamper-proof.

If at still dead-sure about a used CBR, I'd suggest you check among your circle for a well-maintained piece.

Current market prices are around 1.75L for the standard and 2.07L for the ABS so 1.3L for a used ABS sounds too optimistic, you should be prepared for a minimum of 1.5L for an ABS version.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Well, it's worthy doing it for cars that costs few lakhs (not even Maruti) due to the involved COST (FYI, underneath Kodambakkam bridge you can sport Meters India or some shop bearing the title, where they do it on referral basis)

What I mean is, let's say the cost of used CBR 250R with ODO reading 12K in 1.5 years fetches 1.5L & the cost involved is about 20K & the cost of CBR 250R with ODO 25K in 1.5 years fetches 1.3L, there's no point getting the ODO tampered isn't it?

Anyway, I'm not discarding your point completely; let me read & understand more on the process of tampering with ODO & keep your posted here or via FB. Was a good eye opener though

Agree, but think from the buyer's perspective. He has "just enough" funds for a new CBR. He may save 30-40k on a used bike, but he'll never be sure how good/bad the previous owner maintained the bike. Whenever he'd face a small issue, he'll psychologically think it has got to do with something in the past.

Hence I feel its better to get a new ride "if" possible.

Well, IF you know what you are doing, there is no reason why a 125-150cc bike owner shouldn't think about upgrading to a used CBR250R ABS for the price lower than a CBR150R.

Odometer frauds are ridiculously easy to detect on cars. Even easier on bikes. The date of manufacture of the tyres is your best friend here. Car tyres typically last almost twice as much as bike tyres. This fact makes our job even easier when it comes to bikes. On a ~<15k used bike, it should be the same (1/2 month difference at most) as the date of registration of the bike (Point to remember, Tyre manufacturing date should be older than bike registration date for low run bikes.).

If he gets past 25k, in all probability, he would have to change tyres to a newer batch, (i.e. Tyre MF date > Bike reg. date) OR else, in case the seller underclocks the odo to 10k and tries to pass it off, the tyres would be too worn out for a 10k run bike.. there's your easy catch.

eg. Lets take a look at my own bike as an example : If today I change the odometer of my 48k run bike with a brand new one (i.e. odo resets to 0km) and then run it for 10k km and decide to sell it. The new odo will read 10k at the time of selling. Lets assume that I claim that I used it *very less and only inside Nasik City* (A blatant lie ) but very much possible since Nasik city is not particularly large.

4 easy checks that will tell you that I am lying are:

                        1. The front tyre(1st change, May 2011) will be older than rear tyre (2nd change, November 2012) i.e. mfg. date mismatch.
                        2. Front tyre will be more worn out than rear tyre when actually its the rear one which wears out faster than the front. i.e. tyre wear mismatch.
                        3. Date of 1st registration in RC (August 2009) is older than date of mfg of both tyres. Another Simple catch The bike wasn't running without tyres in its initial 2 years .
                        4. A phone call to Bajaj Probiking (or some other Authorized SVC) telling them "I own the bike no. so and so, Could you tell me when is the next service due?"

OT but related Note: If Melroy Alphonso tries to sell his bike and you are the buyer, all you gotta do is google its registration no. to know its entire history.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

That was hilarious, but sadly he's my friend on FB. I know the history and his repeated rants against many out here.

Your points are very valid and one must keep his eyes open and be prepared for performing a few checks for his own good. Carelessness here may lead to nervous nights ahead.

Definitely not unwanted. Googling the registration no. of the vehicle you are considering to buy used is a legitimate strategy. This special case was just used as an example of the kind of data you can find. A friend of mine discovered using a simple google search that an immaculate Honda Accord 2.4AT he was considering to buy used was in fact a stolen vehicle. The vehicle is still unsold and I know the location where it is parked at right now. You wouldn't want to buy a stolen vehicle, would you?
