  • Need to buy a Practical Workhorse!

Hi xBHPians, Myself Shah, from TN. As the title suggests, I need (not want) to buy a workhorse which can take any kind of abuse. The ex-showroom price should be around 50k, give or take 5k. I will be buying this bike in April, May or June. The bike will be used for city-riding only. No compromises on comfort for both rider and pillion. I will be clocking around 300-500kms per month. Almost, all the roads i will be traveling have more potholes than you think. A mileage of around 55-60kmpl would do. Mostly, I will be riding with a pillion, So i think i would have to buy a 125cc bike. But, will a 125cc commuter be able to provide the above mentioned mileage under city conditions? Or Can a 100cc commuter pull two people each weighing around 60-70kgs? The weight of the bike should be as low as possible as I can't handle heavier bikes. Remember, I can't even handle my bro's FZ-S (136kgs) in city. My dad wants to buy a Yamaha or a Bajaj. No other brand is considered as reliable by my dad. So, I have shortlisted SS125 and 125ST. I will be using this bike for the next 5 years, at least. As far as A.S.S. is considered, both Yamaha and Bajaj are good in my locality. So, no worries about it. Hope, I have made all the points required for you guys to suggest me the best one suited for my needs. I am awaiting for your valuable inputs. Let me also know if there are any other worthy consideration in my budget. Thanks in Advance.

a Yamaha or a Bajaj. No other brand is considered as reliable by my dad. So, I have shortlisted SS125 and 125ST.
You can check this thread for a discussion of SS125 vs D125ST : http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/what-bik...oob-biker.html

Considering bad roads, the Discover will offer a slightly smoother ride compared to the SS125 due to it's gas-charged monoshocks.
Discover will also offer slightly better mileage compared to SS125.
The Discover feels smaller compared to Yamaha.
Rider and pillion comfort (read; seating posture and spaciousness) are better on the Yamaha

A 100cc can pull two people, there are millions of Splendors and Passions milling around the country every minute with pillions. It will only lack the initial acceleration. Considering you will be riding in city-traffic on bad roads, a powerful bike would make more sense.

You could also consider TVS Phoenix 125 - it will suit your requirements well.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

I read that thread but that thread's OP's requirement is quite different from mine's. He wants a bike for touring with no pillion whereas I want a bike for city riding with pillion.

A test drive can make me clear about this one.

I know and that's why my dad like Bajaj, so much.

I have seen the 125ST, once. But haven't seen a SS125 in flesh. In pictures, it looks like 125ST has bigger dimensions

Again, only a back-to-back test drive can help.

My dad is not interested in splendors and passions. What about Dream Yuga? Can you throw some light on Dream Yuga, as well?

I showed him an ad of Phoenix in newspaper. At first, he liked its looks. But, after knowing it is from TVS stable, he said no to Phoenix, also.

But, what about reliability? Will 125ST last for 5 or more years given that i take proper care of it? Even one year has not been completed after its launch whereas SS125 is a tried and tested bike.

Any 100cc can pull nicely with a pillion. My ten year old euro2 splendor can easily pull 3 people(really heavy ones).
You said you need to travel through potholes+city,so low end torque is of importance.
            From what I know ss125=gladiator,right?
Gladiator's don't have good low end torque,i think.
I think your best option would be a 100cc with decent low end torque, like splendor(will easily last 5 years, better mileage than 125cc too!)

Its a easy choice of buying 125st with 5 gears...nowadays bajaj is coming with great looks and efficiency...
and about reliability if you take care of your bike, bike will take care of you...

Dont worry about its launch, its a great motorcycle. Bajaj has taken technology one step forward with the two new discovers i;e 100 T & 125 ST.
The discover 125 ST is a very practical yet one among the best 125's of india today.
I say it is a leader among the commuter segment, dont know how its sales are going to perform though. Comfort is the biggest essence of the Discover 125 ST. Other big advantage of Discover 125 ST, 5 speed gearbox, a 4 Valve engine, Better power + Better Mileage & churns out 12.8 BHP of power which even enough for a beginner on highway because i heard that its Company claimed top speed is around 110 Kmph, the tyres are not the best in segment, skinny ones.
RELIABILITY : Coming to its Quality & reliability, never mind Bajaj's bikes are not that greatly built, infact they are built for Value for money purpose, they always serve you the best in the price which you have paid. They are not built to Last long,But comparatively speaking to other companies like Yamaha or Honda, Bajaj's bikes are not the Best in quality, but good enough to serve & be reliable, maintain them well, and they are going to last.
Maintain it well, its going to last easily for 5 years.

SS125 is bigger than Discover ST and slightly more comfortable (personal opinion - I owned a Gladiator and have tested Discover ST as well).
SS125 and Discover are 5-geared 125cc against the 110cc, 4 geared DreamYuga. But that will hardly make a difference in city riding. The Honda has better torque and a very smooth engine, if the Shine is anything to refer by.

Any bike - Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, TVS or Hero will last you as long as you make it last. 5 years is too short a period to bother about. We have seen 15-year old bikes running perfectly fina, adn we have seen 6-month old machines lying hopelessly at ASCs.

I owned a twister. I weigh around 110kg. I have a friend who weighs about 70kg who always travels with me to college. Never had a problem. Bike never complained. It is a little short geared. So a heavy pillion might, just might lead to a wheelie if you aren't careful.

Since you are inclined to bajaj and yamaha, I'd say the 125st and ss125 are on the same pedestal as far as pillion comfort is concerned. But the 125st wil have much better pothole performance.
