For a millionaire newbie, a ZX14R would be the best bike in his budget. Should he jump for it right away, just because he can afford it? From your perspective and my perspective, the NS is an awesome bike, as we are experienced riders. Think from the buyers' perspective too - he is new to biking and would be learning to ride. The NS, though less wild than the Duke, is still a beast which can cross 120 with the flick of a wrist. The FZ is relatively more sedate, it has a lower seat height, so the TS can put his feet down with greater confidence than a NS. And some years down the line, when he plans to sell his FZ/Fazer for a bigger bike, he will still get a good resale value compared to Bajaj.

We are not bashing/promoting any brands or models here. We are just talking of suitability.

First Motorcycle

Hey I'm Sooraj Kumar, 18 yrs old from chennai. I'm 5'11 in height and I weigh 68 kgs. I want to purchase my very first motorcycle and my maximum budget is 1.3 lakhs (cant extend it further). I have little experience on motorcycles by riding some of my friend's motorcycle and did a test drives from showrooms during my semester holidays.

I want a motorcycle which is which is less than 1.3 lakhs which is more practical for city riding, maneuverable, must give a decent fuel effiency, sexy looking, quite powerful and also controllable, less forgiving, decent pillion, must handle any type of roads, should be vibe free, less in maintanence, confortable seating position, good cornering machine and this bike must also be long lasting without giving me any problems. My daily travel distance would be approximately 30 kms (up and down to college). Travelling during sundays might involve going to theatres, shopping or even casual drive with my friends (all within city) etc. While travelling within city as you can imagine at max i can go at 80kms/hr when there is no traffic. The motorcycle must also be good at travelling in low speeds during congested traffic.

Some of the bikes that I have my ridden and having consideration are CB Trigger (for CBS feature but dont know about launch date), Apache 180 abs (ridden it and the vibes were intolerable and was short), Unicorn/dazzler (a good bike), fazer ( awesome design and sturdy as well as featuristic), Duke 200 ( never ridden it but heard its a lot powerful to handle for newbies), Pulsar 200 NS ( another masterpiece expect tyres i guess), Honda CBR150R ( havent ridden it but considering it), Yamaha R15 V2 ( never ridden it too, but my friend who recently purchased it said this bike will meet all of requirements. I seriously doubt that because of its sporty stance and not so practical pillion and low FE).

Please help me to make a decision. What motorcycle is best suited for my requirements ? And also what are the motorcycles should i consider for purchasing ?

Thank you all for your suggestion. Till now i have test driven a couple of bikes in past week i.e fzs, fazer, 200 ns, apache 180, unicorn. Apache 180 felt very short for me and vibes were intolerable. Unicorn was a simple bike with good handling. fzs is a sexy bike with good handling, comfort, performance. I felt the same with fazer as fzs but one difference was i felt fazer to be more comfortable and sturdy. The fairing on it was simply amazing. 200 NS was taller compared to other bikes but since im 5'11 height was not an issue. The seating was not as soft as unicorn or fz or apache but the ridding position was comfortable. Though it has got power and price tag of 1 lakh, i still doubt whether it would be as reliable as honda or yamaha. Some people are telling vibes are intollerable, tyres skid under worst road conditions and wet roads, coolent leak etc.

Let me first go by the list of the bikes you have said above and later on give some other bike suggestions that I would like you to consider.
1. CB Trigger - That's India's first bike with CBS technology which is a good thing and you'll get that for a good price too but the drawbacks I think are it's nothing but a cosmetically upgraded CB Dazzler with little extra features. It will be release in a month or so.
2. Apache 180 ABS - Yes I do agree with it, it's one bike I hate to ride on because it has got a lot of vibrations and I hate to ride a bike with vibrations but it's the cheapest bike which offers you an ABS technology compared to other bikes in India.
3. Unicorn/Dazzler - I prefer you go for Unicorn, it's a good bike, just love to ride, there's no sound and even at high speeds the bike feels stable and it's a good handler too as I am using one now and also as it is India's first bike with Monoshock and pillion seat is more comfortable, you won't get stressed or back pain if you sit on it for long time but the only disadvantage of this bike is that it's old looks, Honda should had considered some other designs for this bike but there's an alternative, the CB Trigger, you can choose that too.
4. Fazer - You can consider this in your list as they have new graphics and it's overall a very attractive motorcycle and also there is it's twin, the FZ with it's new graphics and naked style and wide tyres, it's superb.
5. Duke 200 - Yup it's a very powerful motorcycle, it's the fastest bike from 0-100 beating CBR250R by one second after which the CBR takes over. To be true, yes it's not for newbie's as it has got powerful engine, very less weight which makes it go faster and faster. The only thing my friends and I did not like it (little dislike) was it's sound, it sounds like a auto and it's not that comfortable and doesn't give you that FE.
6. Pulsar 200NS - It's born because of 200 duke, the lower part of the engine is taken from that of Duke and developed by Bajaj. It's a good bike compared to other pulsars with same old looks and yes you heard it right, the tires aren't such grippy as it's hard compound tires and during wet conditions it's a terrible thing and also heard some news about it's brakes as well. But if you can spend around 5-6K and get a good tires from that of Pirelli or Michellin, it's the best ride for you.
7. CBR150R - That's the best bike I would love to own, except few small things like pass flash switch, engine kill switch n poor quality switch gears, it beats r15 in every single battle. That's the next bike I am going to buy. The engine is way more advanced than r15 and is a good handler but doesn't have low end power.
8. R15 - I almost daily ride my friend's R15 and it's a great handler, nothing to say much about it as your friend as already said you except it doesn't have comfortable riding position and the pillion seat is horrible and low FE and also for your height, I don't think you should go for this.

Now here is my suggestions,
1. Karizma - Meets with all the qualities that you mentioned. It looks ain't such an eye grabber on road but trust me it's an overall a superb bike, if given a chance to choose between 220 and Karizma, I would go for karizma for it's reliability and good performance oriented engine. You can go for this.
2. 220 - Sheer raw power is the word I can say but after few years the problem starts as most of my friends are blaming themselves for getting a 220.
3. Impulse - This is one different bike you won't see daily, it's superb and made for Indian roads filled with patholes n other things. . . Good on/off road bike and for your height, I bet it'll suit you greatly.

Pulsar 220 is the one reason why i hesitate to buy 200 ns. I'm going to hero showroom for test driving karizma zmr but i guess its a heavy bike compared to others. I guess fazer suits me in everyway expect the fact it lacks a bit of power. And I will also go to yamaha showroom with my parents to test drive r15 v2 and i will make my parents to sit on it.

The 220 and the NS are one generation apart! The 200 is definitely a lot more refined than the 220!

To be honest, it doesn't lack "power" - it just lacks the top speed.

Don't commit that mistake...or else you will lose all chances of owning a R15!!!!!!

seriously speaking it's a pain for youngsters to get on the R15 and I cannot imagine parents sitting on it, it's not that kind of a bike. . . ZMR is a cheapest full faired bike you can get, you can go for the ZMA itself and also why don't you try my other suggestions like Unicorn and Impulse too. . . 220 is just for power and 200NS is a better machine over that in all aspects. . .
