  • A bike for both me and my dad??? Need help.

Hello fellow riders. Feeling delighted penning down my first post here at xbhp.

Recommending a bike for a person is let alone difficult. But here I am asking all of you guys to recommend a bike which could suit both me and my dads need..First let me explain how this decision of buying a new bike came up.My dad is using the mighty "cosmo blaster" since last 6 years.Till now the bike runs good all though it has problems.(like no spares are available,Dangling side body panels, etc). Generally speaking i hate that bike a lot .I hate that name. I hate how it looks . I hate it .I have been bugging my dad to buy a new bike since last 3 years. But my dad kept saying that this bike full fills my need so no need to change it.When I return home on my holidays (By the way i am pursuing my mechanical engineering at Bhubaneswar) I get totally bored riding pillion on my friends bikes (All are Apache Rtr 160 ). But now I have my industrial training at y home town it self for one month. So i would be traveling for around 20 km daily to the nearby industry. So dad agreed to buy a new bike which both of us can use.As after my training this bike will be mostly used by my dad hence narrowing down on a bike is becoming a head ache.I thought pulsar 135 ls would be good for both of us but today i went to the show room to inquire about the bike. But I got shocked to hear that it has been discontinued. The sales guy said it has been discontinued since 8 months( I was like What the F**K .The company website still shows the bike and I didn't came across this news here at xbhp also). Now here I am in dilemma choosing a bike youthful enough for me but sober enough for my dad.
    1. Budget - 60,000
    2. Age -54/21 ( Dad / Me )
    3. Height -5'3"/5'4"
    4. Weight - 60/65
    5. Intended usage - City commuting, College use.
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - 55 kmpl
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - city - 80%/ highway 20 %
    8. Approximate Daily running - 10 to 20 km
    9. Town - Bargarh , Odisha
    10. Special Preference - Youthful enough for me but sober enough for my dad to ride it.

Did i left any other requirements feel free to ask me.

    Bajaj pulsar 135ls discontinued.

Tomorrow I visited my local bajaj dealer to inquire about pulsar 135ls. Then lightning struck me when the dealer said it has been discontinued. He also added that production stopped since last 8 months or so. Then he insisted me on buying pulsar 150.Never heard of the pulsar 135ls being discontinued any where in the news.Guys please confirm this news.I am feeling like the local dealer is trying to cheat me on buying the p150.If the bike is still available I can get is from a nearby city.
Wiser heads please comment. Thank you all.

Welcome to xbhp and do share more about you in the intro threads. No idea if P135 has been discontinued...maybe others can comment.
Coming to topic, If you are expecting youthful bike with a 55+ mileage, you should be looking at Discover 125ST, Yamaha Gladiator and Hero Ignitor. The Discover and Gladiator are sober, yet stylish. The Ignitor...well...let's say, it's a bit more youthful, but isn't absolute gibberish.

My personal suggestion would be to bump up your budget and go for a reliable, yet sober looking 150cc (SZ-R, Hunk, Xtreme, Unicorn) which would satisfy your hunger for biking as well Suzuki GS150 is also an excellent 150cc machine but avoid it here, as Suzuki's service in Odisha is pretty pathetic.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Test ride Passion Xpro in your budget. It has disc brake version also.

              Why not pulsar 150?
              Does fulfill your needs !
Thank you for your quick response.Yes bumping up my budget could get me a nice 150 cc bike. But the budget can only go up to Rs - 70000 , that too including the accessories and road taxes, etc. Also the bikes you have mentioned are a bit on the heavier side so don't you think they may serve some problem for my dad.

Don't take it personally mate but ,I don't like the passion series at all.

And about the news on Pulsar 135ls getting discontinued is a lie. Found it out from the dealer from a nearby city (sambalpur). The bikes are available , Do you think it would suit me and my dad.If i would go for this bike then how to buy it from the dealer from my city who is arguing that pulsar 135ls is discontinued.Need your suggestions guys.Thank you

                Heavier? Not much, I guess.

Come on dude...it's just 1 hour from Sambalpur to Bargarh!!!! If you have your eyes set on the 135LS, why don't you get it from Sambalpur right away instead of forcing your local dealer to get it for you?

Re: A bike for both me and my dad??? Need help.

@skm.soumya, why not the Stunner... costs approx 65k on road, looks youthful, stylish and comes with disc, electric start, tubeless tires and mileage is above 50kmpl. And it can be ridden by both you and your dad (has a regular handle bar unlike the pulsar 135ls that has split bars which might not be that comfortable for your dad).

Soumya try contacting the service center in your city tell him that it hasn't shutdown and if he ignores you and again tell a lie try complaining at bajaj online site or email.

Well pulsar 135 fully satisfies your need for the bike

Test ride a Passion Xpro (Top variant) at-least once.
You can adjust with any bike but your dad will have some problem with "sporty" bikes. Think over it and do consider xPRO.

Give Bajaj customer care a call and tell them your issue with the dealer. I have seen atleast 5 new 135ls bikes in the last week alone, all with the new sticker scheme. The Bajaj site has a page for it. So its unlikely that the bike has been discontinued.

The P135's looks will probably be subjective. One hand, most people would associate the Pulsar with "baiker bwois" . But there are relatively older bikers who ride it as well. According to your requirements though, the Yamaha SZ-R/X would make sense except for the fuel economy. Many here have reported that it's fuel economy is less than the norm. Well,it's a 150cc bike though. The Ignitor would probably not be "sober" in this case. The Discover 125ST fits the bill,IMO.

Thank you all for your time.

If pulsar 135ls is worth it I will go and get it from the nearby city.Tomorrow I will be going to the showrooms for the test rides.
Will be looking at the following rides (not in any order) -
                            1.Pulsar 135ls
2.Honda cb shine ( my dad insist on it)
                            3.Yamaha szr
                            4.Hero passion xpro (I don't like its styling )
As my dad is used to ride the low powered bike ( previous bike the cosmo blaster only 7.6 bhp ). Will it be too much difficult on my dads part to adapt the new bike with greater power. Also my dad is a very sensible rider who always prefer to ride at 40 to k0 kmph speeds ( when riding inside city). So will these bike pose any problem to him.

                            Am I overreacting .

Just the plain increase in power from ~8 PS to around 14 PS ( 150cc) won't make much of a difference unless it's tuned in an appropriate manner. Most bikes under 150cc are geared for relaxed delivery of power across the rev range (except the P135,it's got quite a meaty low-mid range). Riding at sedate speeds will be quite easy on any of the bikes you listed above. Also, since you are considering the CB Shine and the passion (which you are really dispassionate about),why not opt to test ride the 125ST or even the older Discover 150 Dtsi?
