  • Choosing a new bike for me

Hi xbhpians. This is my first post. But I am a silent follower of this forum for a very long time.I love bikes from my childhood and yes I belive that two wheelers move the soul. I have given advice and suggestions for my friends on choosing a new ride. But when it comes to me, I am experiencing a great dilemma.Ok lets move on to the story.Take some time to read.

Learnt to drive bikes at the age of 11.The passion for bikes started inside me at the age of 12. My father had a bajaj cheetah scooter that time and i used to drive it without his knowledge. When I was studying 10th standard, my dad decided to buy a new bike. But it was for him! I thought that I would also ride it and so asked him to buy a pulsar or apache. Both the bikes are very popular at that time. But my dad said that he is buying for himself and he is the one to decide. And he said he is going to buy a HH splendor+. I was very upset and tried to change his decision atleast to HH glamour or passion. But finally he bought splendor+.
At first I was little upset and then the bike became a part of me. During 10th holidays I got the golden oppurtunity of riding a bullet(350) and it is 1989 model. I rode it extensively for 3 months. That was like living a dream. This icreased my love for bikes. When I entered class 11, seeing my riding and due to my request, my dad allowed me to go to school in bike. So for two years I went to school in splendor+. At that time, I am the only person to have a bike in my school. I would be roaming like a hero! This made me to love my bike more. And I have tried many horns and lightings in my bike. Spend a lot for it.
Then I joined college. And everything became upside down. On seeing the range of bikes, I thought that its time to change my bike. But my dad did not think so! He asked me to wait for some time. I did so and still had fun with my splendor. I have toured extensively, ridden hard and at every stage it was a part of me.
It has never failed to keep up with me.
And now I am entering final year of my college. After riding my splendor for more than five years, I have decided to upgrade. And yes finally I got positive reply from my dad.
And here comes the confusion for me. I have choosed the following bikes:
    1)Yamaha R15 v2
    2)Hero Karizma zmr
    3)Tvs Apache rtr 180 abs
    4) Pulsar 220
    Other details are as follows:
    Budget - Upto 1.2k
    Age - 20
Intended usage - college commute. 20-25kms daily. Further monthly twice I will be going to my hometown and it is a drive of 200kms to and fro.
    Mileage - 35 to 45
Mostly I will ride in city.
I am a well built guy and my height is 5' 11".
I am not a rash rider but usually I drive fast and indulge in signal to signal drags. But still I am a decent rider.
    I usually ride with pillion.
    My major considerations are:
1.Looks(& how it looks for me) and styling
    2.performance
    3.handling and braking
    4.reliability and mileage.

so friends help me out to decide.. Waiting for your valuable feedbacks. Thank you.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I usually ride with pillion. Strike off R15 V2 from your list. ZMR-clear winner.

Apart from the bikes you have mentioned, you can look at p200ns too. Performance[almost equivalent to R15v2], awesome braking, good mileage too.
      You can read here: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/first-im...st-review.html

From list and preferences given by you,
      ZMR>P220>180ABS>R15.

And finally, go take a TD :P

I would also advice you for a 200NS.

          I have driven r15, apache 180 and p200 ns.
Ya 200ns was too good. But I prefer faired bikes over the naked ones.
          Let me consider 200ns also.
r15's low end will be enough for the signal drags and city rides? Orb it depends upon the rider?
Anyone know the real fact about zmr's mileage and zmr?
Because some people told me that zmr is waste and gives a mileage of only 20-25 kmpl. Is that true?

Zmr will give better mileage than zma cause of fuel injection!
So ZMR is not a waste..although bulky fairings, lazy handling is not to my taste..
200 ns all the way if you are tall enough.
R15 in a city is NOT enjoyable...it is when you are riding once in a while, red lining on low gears while flicking through gaps is enjoyable.....

re: Choosing a new bike for me

R15-35-45 mileage would be a miracle, not pillion friendly
Apache 180-since u you are 5.11 you wont be pretty much satisfied with its riding stance on long hauls and this is my personal opinion since im also a mere 6 footer
Karizma ZMR-fits your bill by all means but only if you can manage to maze it through the city traffic
              pulsar 220 and 200ns:best for your signal-signal drags,city traffic,long rides..and yes,if you can tame your pulsar well,you can also get your so-desired 35-45 mileage

if i were you,i would beg for 30 more grands to my dad and get myself a duke 200..
              reasons:its a pocket rocket(best for drag),upright riding posture(makes justice on long rides),decent FE(35-40 kmpl),"HOOLIGAN LOOKS"(definitely is a crowd magnet among its competitors),reliablity(proven-->google ktm's track records)

So my Bottom-line:go for duke 200 which is a bang for your buck,if you can stretch your budget ~30k....if not, then dont have a second thought..go get your pulsar 220/200 ns..

                1)Yamaha R15 v2 - if u love to rev your bike
2)Hero Karizma zmr - if u like touring for almost 400kms at a continious stretch.. no engine tiredness and maximum comfort.
3)Tvs Apache rtr 180 abs - wooping pickup.. best cornering ability.. lacks comfort...
                4) Pulsar 220 - if u r speed enthusiast.. but has those engine noise..

                My major considerations are:
1.Looks(& how it looks for me) and styling
                2.performance
                3.handling and braking
                4.reliability and mileage.

Also check out the kariZMA R  .. reliable and legendary engine.. tested nd proven.. even after riding 1lakh kms.. the bike remains smooth.. doing a 400 kms ride everyday is a piece of cake for this engine.. and you wont even feel tired on this bike after a 400kms stretch..
                Mileage between 35 - 45 kmpl

P200ns is also an option.. quiet good engine from bajaj.. you are not a rash rider.. you mentioned.. so pulsar wont be your tea..

Test ride all the beasts.. and then conclude.

How about zmr's pickup and top end?
And guys, the bike must be stunt friendly..
Yes like the performance of duke.. But its styling is not upto my taste..
I always had a doubt on pulsars reliability..
It would be nice to hear from pulsar owners.

ZMR is not stunt friendly. I mean you can perform wheelies with ease, but not sure about other tricks.
Top end is 125-127 kmph types (mind you, its an almost accurate speedo)
City drags can be won on it. Depends on rider's skills.

Mileage - City - 42 kmpl and highways - 53 kmpl. (getting these figures for 29,230 kms now. )

re: Choosing a new bike for me

within 1.2 lakhs, the bikes that give best power, performance, handling, looks, latest technology are -- R15 V2 & P200NS.

it has to be between these two bikes only. out of these two, R15 V2 is the better bike but looses out on power to P200NS as well as older P220, apart from this there is no negative factor, how comfortable you are riding r15 depends on what is your riding style. regarding pillion, for a girl to climb the rear seat is a small problem, once seated, there is no problem at all.

P200NS, gives you everything at a lesser price minus the fairing and quality. it will win all traffic light GP's with ease unless there is a Duke or CBR alongside you, in that case also, it will give a very strong fight. rear suspension is very hard, and for girls it is a task to climb onto rear seat, once seated things are ok. climbing onto rear seat is a bit difficult for girls, no as much as on R15 but still not as easy as older generation pulsars.

P200NS will give you smile everytime you rev it and launch yourself at signal, not only will it surge past everything else on road but will create a sound that everyone else will be looking at you.

Speeds in city vary from 55 to 75 depending upon traffic (apart from signals and choked traffic). I shift gears minimally and all upshifts lie between 3.5k to 5k RPM.
Highways - its between 85-95kmph most of the time.

Cons - RVMs get loosened, fairing makes it a bit difficult in city (used to it now), stock rear tires suck - replaced with PSD.

Thank you guys for your valuable feedbacks and suggestions..

now I am confused between r15 and zmr.
Though I like 200ns, I want a faired bike which would be a real head turner.
going to TD zmr today and will post my thoughts about it.
I can compromise on pillion comfort as I will use splendor or maestro for elder people..

among r15 and zmr which is better VFM?

Bro.. both the bikes are from completely different segment so we can't say which is VFM and which is not as both are VFM..

ZMR gives your long ride comfort which the R15 doesn't and can never..

I don't have issues with the side mirrors loosening but I do have problems with the visor.. the hole on the fairing is breaking and i am using a big washer to hold it together..

I too had a feel that the stock tires are horrible on the ZMR.. but after I changed to Michelin, I felt the stock tires were perfect.. I used to bend till the foot peg rubs the floor on most of the curves with the stock tires but now I am even scared to bring the bike down with the Michelin..

ZMR mileage is unbeatable.. only a 100cc bike can give better Mileage than the ZMR..

Thanks to its FI based engine, the FE is always above 40 in city (i ride insane) most of the times the Rev is above 4K and shifts at 4K RPM per gear..

on the Highways I had one of the best FEs I can ever imagine from a 223cc engine.. Max I achieved 56kmpl and minimum was last time when I went to Chandigarh which was 45 kmpl.. only after I returned i remembered that the air pressure was much less than normal which could have been the reason..

on highways always above 80kmph.. top speed on my ZMR was 134 kmph after a small modification.. upgeared my bike using P220's rear sprocket.. now with stock and top speed is back to 129kmph and nothing more..

Test Ride both the machines and you decide what you want instead of what others suggest.. what others like at the end you might not like..

again.. its you who is going to live with it.. so pick up your beast

happy hunting let us know which bike you have decided..
