  • Moving from bike to scooter

I am thinking of moving to a scooter from my Gladiator. My thinking is as follows.

    1. Automatic transmission a boon in Mumbai's traffic.
    2. Under-seat dickey is a boon when carrying "stuff" compared to being on a bike
    3. Parents are more amenable to be pillions on a scooter than on my bike.

However, a friend says that riding a scooter on my daily route is risky. For Mumbaikars, my route is from Kandivali to Vikhroli via Western Express Hghway and JVLR [http://goo.gl/maps/wvOPS]. It is a route where I routinely see Pulsars and Karizmas zipping by at 100+ kmph but I also see scooters scooting along.

Bikers who have ridden on such stretches, what is your experience and opinion? Is taking a scooter on this route foolish?

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: Moving from bike to scooter

There is nothing wrong in travelling on scooter thru this route. I use to travel few years back from borivali-andheri via jvlr/aarey colony. Scooters can easily do 60-70kph at ease. The only issue could be the small fuel tank size, which you would be filling up quite often, since you will be travelling kandivali-vikhroli. Have you shortlisted any scooter? If not, kindly list down your priorities, so that you can be helped.

        @The Monk, thanks for approving.
@devils_friend, That is very re-assuring to know. I think there will have to be an adjustment in how I challenge potholes and road defects. My Gladiator has made me pretty fearless on that route.

I have short-listed in order of preference (before TD). I am 173cm, 102 kgs.

        1. TVS Wego - larger wheels, telescopic forks and disc brake at front and that body balance tech, if it is not a sticker
        2. Honda Aviator - telescopic forks and disc brake at front, tuff-up tyres
        3. Suzuki Access/Swish - that 125cc engine
        4. Mahindra Rodeo RZ << Surprise Black Horse that might pip everyone else

Most likely reason I might reject candidates is if the dickey doesn't take my LS2-78 helmet. Next reason might be location of service centres.

There's a petrol pump practically next door to my house, so tanking up won't be a problem.

Have a look at Yamaha Ray-Z also. One heck of a good scooter. Peppy engine, pillion comfort is top notch, Yamaha reliability.

Styling. Check. Instrumentation. Check. Suspension. Check. Disc brake offered as option? Dear God, why not?

But yes, I will be checking Jupiter also.

Re: Moving from bike to scooter

*Stay away from the Mahindra Rodeo. I have heard enough people complaining about poor fuel efficiency and service. But has good pep.

*The Yamaha Ray is a looker and is doing good in the market. The only problem is it is slightly underpowered.

*Needless to say Honda Activa/Aviator are clearly the best and VFM products among gearless scooters.

*The Suzuki Access/Swish pack good performance so may suit your purpose of riding at high speeds. Again a good product.

*The TVS Vego is the closest competitor to the Activa. Actually it is almost as good as the Activa. A VFM product. But I doubt high speed stability.

*I am surprised you never mentioned the Vespa! I would straight away suggest it. The peppiest of the lot and has good quality. A friend of mine has one and she says the vespa does 80kmph without a sweat. And since you are in Mumbai, servicing should not be a problem.

Re: Moving from bike to scooter

Only for Mumbai's worst traffic and bad roads I moved from bike to scooter. Have Yamaha Ray. Fantastic handling, control, zippy upto 60. Tops out at 80. Reasonable FE. The only problem I have is that I get tailbone pain even from a short ride. I think rear suspension is hard and its non adjustable.

Has anyone been experiencing tailbone pain on riding Ray?

What other alternatives are available in this respect? Comfortable suspension. ?

Be safe for another ride !

Go for Suzuki Access. Peppy engine, good seat comfort, telescopic front suspension. The only thing thta you can be concerned is the availability of SVC within your reach.

From your short list i would recommended S access.
You should also check out TVS Jupiter based on successful scooter wego
Honda Activa/aviator is the winner in terms of life and reliability. I am still riding my 8.5 years old but well maintained activa
