  • Best Bike under 75k

    hello Pro Riders,

    my name is Amit.

I live in Pune doing CSE(TE). I currently own the First model Honda Activa, been riding it since last 7 years..and now i am looking to buy a new bike.

For those of who live in Pune,my daily ride will be from Pashan to Hinjewadi and sometimes in the city.(30km on Highway and 10-20km in city ).

Since i am college student,i want a bike that flaunts good looks as well as has good mileage.

My height is 5.5 feet and weight is 60kg.My budget is restricted to 72k to 75k. This will be my first bike.

    Requirements are as follows :

    1. Mileage above 55km/l under spirited city commuting and over 60 on highway.
2.Riding speed will be between 40 to 70.Everyday on Highway(30km).
    3.Digital Speedometer(cause i find it cool )
4.Should be easy to handle and lightweight since my height is 5.5

    I have short-listed a few :

1.Mahindra Centuro (Great features but engine seems to be unreliable,People are criticizing this bike on its official FB page as well )

2.Yamaha SS 125 (Mileage not so good)

    3.Pulsar 135 LS

4.Yamaha SZ RR(Does not have digi console and seemed a bit heavy )

I loved the Pulsar 135 LS cause it meets all my needs, but i heard most of the people over forums and also one of my friend said that Bajaj Bikes require High Maintenance after 2 years or so. Is this true ? And is it true because Bajaj Bikes are better than other company bikes that they require better maintenance ?

I have not finalized the bike yet..Open to many suggestions..Help me choose.

Try cb trigger also. It's pretty good for first timers. Mileage is 50-52 in city, commuterish riding position, cool looking digi cockpit. Check with local dealer for price coz i don't know about pune.

If you willing to digest tvs service, phoenix will do the job. You can consider apache 160 as well. But mileage would be 45 in city.

Test ride the bikes & decide.

Trigger is quite costly, even the basic version is for 79k in my city.and the P135LS is 67k is it really worth to spend 12k more ?

Yes it is. cb trigger is far better refined engine than p135. It can run 60-80 easily. Extra 4k is worth the salt.

BTW P135,P150,P180 & P220F are on end of it's life cycle. BAL would update this year. My guess P135 would be discontinued this year. Better to take cb-trigger coz it's the replacement for cb unicorn dazzler.

Ride it & you will love it.

                    Re: Best Bike under 75k

While I wanted to buy a bike, I too was in the same dilemma. But XBhp reviews came handy. I read quite few hundred pages of reviews on several bikes. I found FZ, GS150 and Karizma got most user reviews. However my budget was somewhat like yours about 65K.

Pulsar 135 is a 4 valve engine. that 135 gave a bit more top end and I felt it would give more mileage. But it was comparable to SS125 or Shine but it was pricey than other 125cc meanwhile it never made sense to spend on it. Overall maintenance was higher or on par to simple 150cc bike. I test rode it, the switches were good, but disliked it for knotty gear shift and hard seat/suspension. I was not sure if we could get proper parts in future so I kept away from it. For the same reason I kept away from Suzuki bikes too.

TVS did not have a good 125cc bike two years back. The pheonix has now got quite good reviews for low end puller and a close upgrade to the far famous Victor. You can test ride that.

Honda Shine back then had gear box and starting issues and I kept away from it. Not sure how they have refined it or its still the same.

I then narrowed down finally to Yamaha SZR, . I decided to compromise on fuel efficiency. In the close to 19000km and 2year+ ride. I havent yet changed one single part, except for air filter and oil filters and once a busted tail lamp bulb. I get 42-45 in city and upto 50 on highway while I ride around 40-60kmph. Its not as good a bike as Unicorn or FZ but it definatly is cheaper and engine feels relaxed even when you rip at 80-100. Its sluggish above 100. But absolutely no vibe like in pulsar or apache. It has quicker pickup than even FZ which is 2bhp more powerful simply as it has smaller tyres which ofcourse I dislike, I prefer little soft compound rubbers for more grip like MRF(which is surprisingly present on SS125) than the TVS tyres which is found on SZ and even Pulsar 150 too! My version of bike does not have a kicker and in all these years and cold starts not once faced a issue of bike not starting on one crank! I love that It has a false gear issue while shifting from 2nd to 1st gear (maybe its time I get clutch overhauled and checked). I like the amazing disc brakes. Bigger disc means quick stopping power. Just want to let you know to make sure you dont go for a bull crash guard, it will keep hitting the mudgaurd in pot holes.

I recently checked out the CB Trigger for a cousin who wanted a bike. He finally settled for a Pulsar 200NS beyond my suggestion not to go with it. The Trigger is snazzy looking from far but when you take closer look you will find cheap build, poor switches, same engine as Unicorn. I found upon close comparison in showroom that Unicorn has better switch gears, better disc brakes and single gear shift, alloy foot pegs etc. CB Trigger has poor build quality but looks stylish. And its almost 6k more than Unicorn. Definitely not worth it!!

Mahindra bikes, I would rather wait and watch! They did spend a lot on electronics and technical stuff, but how good will it last or survive the nature say after 2 or 3 years? Engine has had mixed review. I would say its a bike for someone intending to compare a splendor vs. centuro. Definitely its not a comparison to the likes of Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki.

Why dont you look at Hero Ignitor? If you want looks, less weight, and cheap cost it fits in. But that engine does not let you rip above 80kmph. It struggles.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

                      Hi Amit,

Considering your requirements, i should suggest you to go for Hero ignitor for below reasons:

5years engine warranty, which would be always beneficial for you as being a student it would be boon to you as far as maintenance / or any harm to engine/bike concerns etc.
                      Decent FE
                      Comfy seating posture and seats
It can cruse on highway 60 to 65 kmph which is decent enough for our highways.
                      Front Disc brake
                      Tubeless tires.

                        Re: Best Bike under 75k

In my SS(11200 km. Nov 2012), I get 48-50 on an average(I ride between 45-75 kmph zone but occasionally go till 90+ kmph). It's fair regarding all the other aspects of the bike though a bit less for a 125cc.
SZ RR is a good bike if you can do with the tyres.
Discover ST is a better buy compared to earlier Discovers.
GS 150 is not suited for our height frankly.
Take a test ride for Apache. If you can make peace with vibrations, tyres and engine refinement, it's good.
