  • Suzuki GS-150R or Yamaha FZ 16

    Hi all,

I am 5' 10" and weighs around 80Kgs and 33 years old; planning to buy a new bike in 150cc segment. I have shortlisted Yamaha FZ 16. I visited Suzuki motors website and found this machine quite attractive. Now am in a dilemma whether to go for GS or FZ. After going through some threads I found GS is a commuter type bike. I am planning to take test drive of both the bikes before making a decision. My requirement is it should give a decent mileage, comfortable riding and a good look. My usage will be in city traffic and will be traveling around 30Kms per day. But to my surprise I have not found any GS 150R till date in Chennai. Also I have read about rust issue, spare parts availability problems in GS. Have they rectified rusting issue?.

My Question is choosing GS is worth the money. The on-road price is 79K for GS and 82 for FZ. Also I have read several threads about FZ and GS. But still I couldn't still make any decision. I was told that i need to wait for 15-20 days for Yamaha and GS is readily available. Thanks in advance.

Go for Yamaha FZ. The bike is quite nimble and boon to ride in city traffic. GS is heavier than FZ and the ASC of Suzuki is an issue (check in your city). The good thing about GS is an additional 6th gear which is a boon on highways. But, if you intend to ride the bike in city, go for FZ. The only concern about FZ will be the average, it gives about 30-35kmpl.

I personally like GS more than FZ.
If you have already test rode them then your heart will tell you.
And yes, if service centre is nearby you can opt for GS straight away, very comfortable bike with better mileage.
You will get +ve reviews for FZ everywhere except for the mileage.

I went to suzuki showroom today, but I was a bit late to get a test ride. I saw the white beast which will be more than big when compared with other 150cc mill; eventhough my knowledge in bikes is very less, I was surprised with the excellent build quality. I was told by the sales person that the engine was imported from Japan. Can anyone throw some light on this. This bike would have made much more impact if they came with mono suspension. Now I am slowly getting carried away by this bike. After taking a test ride I will decide on that. They told me that the mileage for this bike would be 50.

You'll book it once you take a test ride

Regarding engine part - may be it is designed in Japan, it is completely built in India AFAIK.
Yes almost all GS owners get atleast 50kmpl inside city (from what I've read in ownership thread of GS150)
            Good luck.

It will give 50 kmpl initially , later it will drop gradullay, mostly because of inefficient Service guys at Suzuki. Pathetic ASS by Suzuki FYI. Soon after sometimes you will feel its under powered. Do not go for it, you can check UNICORN or TRIGGER, because HONDA will atleast give more resale when you want to sell. This is my personal experience of having GS150 for 2 years.

If After Sales Service is good in your city and parts are available then only go for Suzuki GS150R. Its good in highway and have better mileage or else go for Yamaha FZ16

Re: Suzuki GS-150R or Yamaha FZ 16

I'm 5'10"(178cm) tall, weigh 75kg and little younger than you.

I see you got a really tough choice at hands!!! at least until Suzuki GiXXeR(150cc) comes out this June/July.

                  Why I bought GS150R:
                  1. reselling isn't my trait, so it's never on the cards.
                  2. lowest possible vibrations ≈ 80 kmph.
                  3. lowest road presence, owning one of kind quality motorcycle yet affordable.
                  4. decent mileage while cruising(≈ 80 kmph) on highways and impeccable figures during sedated rides. I noted more than 60 kmpl from a 600km(to & fro) sedated ride. I wanted to kill myself during the ride; one of many idiosyncratic thoughts that cross your mind while riding a 150cc bike around 50-55 kmph speed for hours together on highways like NH4. I was feeling sleepy too at times, took breaks to counter boredom.

                  Issues/Concerns:
                  1. There was single incident of rusting issue which was viral during initial months after launch. Rusting was reported almost everywhere on the motorcycle body. No official(forensic) report as such from Suzuki(at least I'm not aware of it).
                  2. There were multiple instances of tank mouth rusting, poor coating reported from first batch. That was sorted out in subsequent batches.
                  3. No, GS150R is engine is not imported from Japan, it's not practical for competitive pricing. NOTE: it also gives you a picture of SVC/ASC personnel & their technical expertise. I'm not claiming there aren't any, but not many.
                  4. I've experience with Honda SVC/ASC too. they're not any better; perhaps it's subjective. NOTE: it's our/same(Indian) people working at all SVCs/ASCs; quality of work might depend on workload-payment factors, out of scope btw.
                  5. Mileage reported from owners has diverse range. Couple of exceptions are acceptable; but poll results fits an agreeable bell(normal) curve saturating around 50-55 kmpl. Pointing all fingers to rider, maintenance, fuel & daily usage/storage factors.

PS: If I get/had ₹ 1L to spare, I would happily bring Yamaha FZ16 to my stables with my eyes closed. That said, upcoming Suzuki GiXXeR(150cc) will make that decision tougher.

PSS: We make up our mind in a blink(Gladwell) & search for explanations later. LOL!

Both are the benchmarks of 150cc. But I'd suggest you FZ as you plan to ride in city traffic. FZ is arguably the best city handler in 150cc segment!

If you are now in chennai, don't go for suzuki. The A$$ is nowadays getting worse for servicing the vehicle. GS is one of the good motorcycle to buy in 150cc commuter segment. For your frame & age factor, GS is perfect fit. Think twice before buying GS for the A$$ in chennai.

For FZ, One of the fun motorcycle in 150cc premium commuter segment. Few drawbacks are FE & weak top-end & all because of the rear fat tyre. But the A$$ is better in chennai than suzuki.

FE for GS inside city- 45-50
FE for FZ inside city- 35-40(ride it in very sane manner)

You can consider Honda bikes too but same problem, A$$.

Ps: I own a suzuki access.

                        Hi All,

At the outset I thank you all for the suggestions. Initially I planned to take test ride this weekend; but due to office work I am in bangalore now(returning by this month end). I want to take a test ride of both the beasts. I feel GS would suit me more considering the age factor. After taking test drive I will post which bike I have selected. I am based at chennai, but I will take the bike from my hometown coimbatore.

As said by all I am not sure how well the ASS would be; it is not the case in chennai alone. My concern is will Suzuki stop production of this bike after Gixxer is launched. If so what about the availability of spare parts for GS.

                          - Being in another city shouldn't stop you from taking test rides, provided you've spare time at hand.
                          - I suggest you to buy motorcycles/scooters from a dealer where you might go for servicing most of the times.
                          - GS150R will continue to live as it's competes against Bajaj-Puslar:150, Hero-xTreme:150, Hero-Hunk:150, Yamaha-SZR:150, Honda-Unicorn:150 => 150cc Executive commuters. That puts rest to spare parts issue. Who would've thought Honda would discontinue CB Unicorn Dazzler?
                          - GiXXeR will compete against Yamaha-FZ16, Honda-Trigger etc; 150cc street fighters although Yamaha is looking at 170cc upgrade for FZ.

FzS is more suitable for city rides since it has better torque and its power delivery is better in low and mid range of RPM. Unlikely GSR bores you in city traffic for its bulky and has less power in low gears. GsR does good on highways. So for your purpose fZs is a better option.

Sorry, I wanted to say FZ-S not FZ16

Do you have torque & power curves in each gear of GS150R & FZ-S? It will be reasonably apparent for comparison.

Bike/Trait Displacement MaxPower MaxTorque Kerb Weight(Kg)
                              Suzuki GS150R 149.5 cc 13.8 BHP @8500 RPM 13.4Nm @6000 RPM 149
                              Yamaha FZ-16 / FZ-S 153 cc 14PS @7000 RPM 13.6Nm @6500 RPM 135
It's apparent that FZ[16/S] is strong in middle, apt for stop & go traffic in cities & GS150R for highways with power in the top.
