  • Which bike would increase fun quotient in daily commute

    Hi Friends!

I respect you all as a massive source of ideas and opinions which can be better than brainstorming with few friends who have no or little idea about " what is daily biking all about?"

I ride my bike (TVS star sport 2007 ) from ghaziabad to gurgaon ~ 52 kms each side 5 days in a week . I love it this way as these are 2-3 hrs which I live the most everyday. In the last 3 years, for which I have been riding it seriously I have fallen in love with it, more and more. I care about it and pamper it just like I would to my Girlfriend but increasing maintenance costs and a below average average 33kmpl ( I rip it hard, always maxxed ) keeps on making me think that if thats how its gonna be. why not throw in some Money and get a bigger option than my pocket rocket . Don't let this FE number boggle you that I don't take care of it , I never leave it with any replacement pending. Pollution standards are met in a really impressive manner. I think maybe my technician tinkered with its carb and messed it up and despite all the tuning that I have tried I can't get the FE above 45 no matter how sane I ride it. That makes me wonder if it was the same bike that used to deliver the FE of 78 kmpl.

I have loved the way this small bike handles, feels a little bit more stuck to the road and heavier compared to other 100cc out there while being driven . Its got new suspensions and MRF zapper tubeless tyres which has increased the control and fun ( the rear one is 100/90) . It tops at 102.33 kmph under favorable conditions on a flat road (not downhill road , I know you may be thinking about it ).

My monthly expenditure breakdown is something like this
    4500 INR for fuel
+ ~1000 - 1500 INR for servicing (includes oil change and itsy bitsy part (like brake shoes, bulbs, oil seal rings etc.) replacement ] they wear out rather quick
    ------------------------------------ = ~5500 - 6000 INR per month

    Enough about my current ride.

I may be wrong, but I think with this expenditure I can handle a bit more BHP (i think double power) because bigger engines will definitely act smoothly being revved at 70-80 kph where my current engine is maxxed out. What bike would you suggest I should go for ? i have a fondness for non-fairing naked looks as there is little fuss about rattling platics, I may be wrong here. But I think that gives me liberty of not slowing down at desolate stretches and taking off from speed breakers and land 4-5 mtrs on the other side.

I initially had locked down at Duke 200 , even did a TR and almost booked it ( a reckless and hooligan like decision that doesn't match to what I am going to put down here) but my parents think that its too much of power and price of course so that was shot down, risk of me being kicked out of my house with my bike . I can convince them to be able to spend upto 1 lac approx at max.

I have an expectation that my new ride will let me drive it @ 80-90 kmph and still return a healthy figure of 40kmpl ( am I too much demanding? , I don't know),
would have a bang for the buck tag. would be zippy enough for quick dashes and that won't become an excuse later on for poor FE or performance, and low on maintenance part. I can still sustain a hit on FE ~37-38 kmpl.

I am not putting in any names so that opinion of yours can be unbiased.
please start with your suggestions. and I really would appreciate any input coming across.

Get a pulsar 200NS and live happily.

No offense buddy, but this sentence of yours- " I rip it hard, always maxxed ) keeps on making me think that if thats how its gonna be. why not throw in some Money and get a bigger option than my pocket rocket ." makes me to put a request in front of you that please don't be a threat to the traffic. Respect other motorcyclists and cagers (cars) on the road. Always wear helmet and riding gears while daily commuting. Please understand that the bikes such as the Dukes, 200NS, CBR250, R15 etc. are some very serious powerful machines and require a sane head over the shoulder to control those horses.

" But I think that gives me liberty of not slowing down at desolate stretches and taking off from speed breakers and land 4-5 mtrs on the other side. "
Again a sentence that I felt is not right. We promote safe biking here in xBhp forum and we don't want you to hurt yourself at any cost.

PS: This is just what I felt after reading your post a couple of times and I understand that I may have understood it differently.

You need to be mature before getting hands on 200ns, it ain't a splendor, fz or cbz, power is immense for noobs and IT CAN KILL YOU ...!!
under 1 lac, ns is only a option, and sorry to be rude, but the way you've typed your query, I wonder what'll happen to those around you if you get a ns. Pls be responsible, ride safe and hard only when you've attended nirvana on ns. Remember that below 6k rpm, it is like any 150cc bike, But when you throttle beyond 6k ,you will get scared for first time (and on 8.5k rpm, you'll be amazed)

50kms each side, so its 100 kms daily... that not a short ride, in any way. comfort should be considered here. are you gonna redline every day and stay in aggressive stance?
bajaj avenger is a good bet. i know you asked about naked sports type bikes, but still take a TD on highway. 220 cc, less pricey than pulsars, 35km/lt sure.

BTW, for cruising at 70-80km/hr, even a good 150cc can also do. in low budget, the old honda unicorn can give a planted ride than others. 45 km/lt sure.

save money to buy the best safety gear you can, spend on bike next. trust me. got 1 lakh? spend 20-30k for safety. i think under 1 lakh, the only bike that gives abs is tvs apache. not sure.

abs is a big safety feature. if you aim at safety first then, this is it. downside is low comfort and you get very good handling and revving engine. but maintenance should be given better than bajaj. and again you are already using tvs, so you can easily adjust.
I'm a responsible rider. It doesn't matter what you ride, but what matters is how you ride.

Yes definitely P200NS is a good bet but if you want something with a lower power output, you can go for GS150R,FZ-S and Apache 160 depending on your preferences.

I know that I made a mistake when I presented myself in those words. I keep it maxxed in straight dashes only, not like I am weaving through traffic while my side mirrors flap like a #***ing bird. ... no offense taken and none being conveyed too. I am just trying to clarify what I meant to say. I know the difference between aggresive yet controlled riding and insane driving.

Where can I get this particular certificate of being mature?..... A noob may die while walking on foot, riding a bicycle as well, sportsbike or for that matter a sub 200 cc isn't a mandate for that. The way I typed my query is because I always feel cheerful whenever I re-live those moments, yeah I grin at that time. quite possible that the message going across maybe be entirely different from what it actually is, and I apologize for that . but please do let me know how do you get that magical power of certifying anyone a NOOB or IMMATURE so quick.

              ~from a 200ns 4300kms owner with two accidents, still learning. .
Yeah, I think I could have gained more respect If I would have said that " even I have crashed twice. The first crash was in a rear door of a wagon-R in which the front chassis got twisted to left. and second one in which the front part was damaged except the headlights. and yeah the god given gears saved my life. "

I know that you learn when you fail , its true . But I don't think its worth bragging about. I have got my lessons already. and yeah, the last one happened when my bikes odo was at 30k the currently it has been ridden for more than 95k. Speedo unit replaced twice so can't quote the reading , went bad due to jerks . 4300 kms and 95k kms .... feel it .

" But I think that gives me liberty of not slowing down at desolate stretches and taking off from speed breakers and land 4-5 mtrs on the other side.

You missed the line just before that, the way i wrote it was just to exaggerate how the naked looks on a bike matter to me so that if I don't give a damn to potholes or rough patches, nothing comes rattling down apart from my beloved bike.

are you gonna redline every day and stay in aggressive stance?
ha ha, thats how it has been so far. I work out so that I can stay fit and absorb all the punishment
              ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brothers , I know that so many of you may be way better than me in skills and all . But trust me , though this is my first post but I have been reading these forums for last two years . I know that with bigger power comes the bigger responsibilty. but for god's sake stop treating a new comer with such a condescending attitude.

I have put forth my requirements (sorry again for not being too obvious) , uber handling at corners so that I don't have to slow down, ~40 kmpl FE, capable of cruising at 80-90 without any slightest sign of stress, doesn't have to ask for part replacements frequently like my current ride does.

Just to elaborate, I always replace spares by genuine TVS spare parts , and that means everything except tyres. but my switchgear keeps falling, electricals like magnet coil, or the startup coil keep failing. speedo fails and shows jerks though the odo keeps on working fine . Due to overheating or maybe continuous stress the tuning of cams goes haywire and have to go to shop for that frequently. I want a reliability in the overall composition of the new motor which doesn't fall apart . The available spares at authorised store should also be immaculate artifact so that mechanic doesn't end up saying that " arey sahab! ab showroom wali baat nahi aayegi? company ki fitting alag hoti hai " . I have heard that at TVS service center.

Please add on a little bit more details about the vehicle you suggest keeping in mind the points that I emphasized at.

Thanks to all for your time and efforts.

For your particular type of use i would say a honda trigger is good enough. It has decent mileage, decent power and very good handling for street use.

I would have suggested Yamaha R15 considering your points but it is a faired bike and costs ~1.3L in Mumbai and hence, Pulsar 200NS is what you are looking for.

for a New Pulsar 200 NS what is low limit of FE it can dive to, if ridden aggressively? being a carbed engine it shouldn't vary as much as an FI, I believe.

Also some people have posted pics of a KTM duke console showing FE 55~60 kmpl on highway too. is that true? how much closer to reality this is. I am asking this because thats the ONLY bike I have TRed as of now. none other, including 200 NS. and my heart still ticks for it . can't let it go off of my dreams.......

Me being NS owner can answer this one.
On aggressive riding, @ 80-90 kmph I get fe of 34 kmpl approx.

By the way, you should get the NS for your budget and your dose of adrenaline.

                        1. Maturity and honour isn't certified or brought off, it is earned.here on xbhp, you make your presence and personality by the way you type, as it is the only medium of expression. And the previous comments of fellow xbhpians clearly depicts that I'm not the only one who thinks what you actually are...since you made that perception about you yourself.
                        2. Crash knowledge was given to prove that me advising you isn't like a random guy suggesting a chap to buy Audi, merc or anything he doesn't have. Mentioned my stat to tell you that I do own a ns and know it's real ups as well as downs. Bragging is what you've mentioned, I just gave a glimpse.

3.your 1L+ kms, can I know which bike did that. .? Was that a 23.5bhp/18Nm T bike that goes 0-60 in 3 sec . .? If yes then sir, you're my senior, else I also did Many thousand kms on cycles, activas, cars, toy cars, trains and God knows what else.
Take care and Me going for a ride on Ns now, you typing your query, yeah "I'm FEELING IT".
Take it lightly, your next comment won't draw any reply from my side.but some times, you gotta give some truth to flyers..

Btw, for your requirement and budget limit, there are many 150cc bike which can be ridden in 80-90km/H range for long distances. Trigger, FZ being a few. Else P200ns there.
Mileage for all these will be ~33-35km/L when ridden hard.

Something extremly good in performance, fairly fuel efficient and descently reliable: RTR 160/180
Something Best in performance, Brilliant in looks and descently fuel efficient: P200 NS.
PS: I too own a 2006 model star city. Its done around the same kms U hve done. I sometimes find it funny, My RTR is more reliable than the star, if ripped. But the parts are exremly cheap, hence I havent sold it and my brother rides it under 60 kmph. My RTR has done 56K now. Still touchwood. Reaches top speed without breaking a sweat.
TR all, number of times, then decide.
