  • KTM Duke 200 or Yamaha R15?

There was this question again! Duke 200 or R15? Even after reading all the reviews and forms this question still rings a bell in my head. Owning a Yamaha FZS has changed something about the perspective of biking to me. I learned biking in my FZ (Not only the bike i should thank, a friend of mine reached me a lot on controlling the power bikes).

Its almost 3 years and going beyond 25k now i feel i need more power but without burning a hole in my pocket. I always wanted the Yamaha R15 that too the V2.0. With menacing looks apart from that its a excellent small race machine i took a test ride of it and it was mind boggling particularly the dynamism and refinement of the bike. I am almost settled for it. But one day after taking a Pulsar 200ns ride i am blown away by the power that engine generated but it never felt like the Yamaha apart from the power delivery.

After some day i started researching about KTM Duke 200 and went to showroom to took a test ride, i was expecting something same as 200NS but the Duke is totally different from the word go it never stopped revving and just wanted me to ride it hard, very flickable and always in control. Amazing experience it was. Now comes the pricing part.

I am ok with both Yamaha R15(onroad 1.30lakh in chennai) and Duke 200(onroad 1.5lakh in chennai), But what concerns me more is the spending that's going to happen after buying the bike so to say the maintenance, mileage etc. My weekly commuting is exactly 130kms and least of 2 hours of travelling per day may exceed when i take a long drive but that's occasional. My FZS is giving me around 31kmpl and i accelerate a bit in free stretches.

Some say both the R15 and Duke 200 are very costly to use and maintain. Guys pls help me choose between the R15 and Duke 200. I love both the bikes to heart and they are my dream machines!

    Query Approved

AFAIK the Duke is not a very expensive bike to own and gives 30-35 kmpl.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I own R15 V 2.0 & Duke 390, duke 390 is newer entry but riding R15 for more than two years.
R15 has a sporty riding posture which you will find it a bit odd for some time whereas d200/390 has upright posture similar to FZ, duke needs to be revved hard and its great to ride in city roads but on highway you will suffer wind blast because of absence of windscreen. R15 does a reasonable job in city but again you have to get used to it but on highway its easy cruising
On the mileage side duke 200 will return you around 30-35 kmpl and R15 will give you 38-40 kmpl
I would suggest you to TD both bikes and decide which you find suitable for your touring

You love every aspect of the R15, always wanted to own one but the D200 impressed you only with the acceleration and the flickability. Not sure why there's a confusion.

Only one thing that is against r15 is it's seating compartment other than this it is excellent machine to own and u will never bored with it for the coming 5-7 years. Duke is a great performance oriented bike which is comfortable than r15

my 390 gives 30kpl at least.the 200 should easily get 35-40+kpl the way its geared I thought.get the 200 and fit an r15 visor for wind protection.but on looks dept. its still r15.

Ya took the test drives of R15 and Duke 200. I am really satisfied with both the bikes performance. But Duke 200 stole my heart. Im just thinking about the maintenance and mileage. I know that I should not expect much from such a powerful bike. But something reasonable is good (30-40). Then how about periodical maintenance and spare costs?

Spare parts cost less if you compare it to Yamaha, but some parts are expensive, but not the ones you would normally change due to wear and tear. For example, cost of one indicator unit is Rs 560, but oil filter if from Rs 64 (if I am right). But I tell you from experience, reliability/quality can be an issue. Meaning parts going out early.

Don't worry about the Duke's fuel efficiency. It will return a pretty decent fuel economy if maintained well. Mine returned a uniform 40 kmpl for 2 years. The periodic maintenance cost and niggles are what is a pain with the duke. Something that the Yamaha has an upper hand in. The duke always appeals to the heart more than the mind

Mileage wise R15 provides 37 and Duke 32. I'd suggest to go for the Duke since it has amazing ability. Maintenance wise both would be costlier than Fzs, but that's not going to burn your pocket if you maintain periodic servicing and engine oil change. All the best.

Wow! how many genuine responses..i am so happy . Now i am clear about these bikes.Since my useage is mostly of urban condition and less than 10% of useage in highways i need the acceleration & agility to quickly maneuver in the traffic. Though R15 V2 is a great bike, it lacks in power and comfort i think(no offence please) otherwise extraordinary bike. Taking the test rides back to back revealed some fine details of these bikes. Duke 200 seems to be the fun bike, i just took the test ride for few minutes it was so enthralling i think its the character of the engine. Plus the power, flickability and dynamism gives it an upperhand in real conditions. Not to leave the design part, its design is so fresh and out of the box and built is superb and light as a razor.

Any suggestions about Pulsar 200 NS?

About 200NS, if you like the looks, and don't mind giving away FI, you can always use the extra 50K you save and riding comfort it will give you

If you're concerned about maintenance and after purchase expenses then I'd suggest you to go with R15.

                          1) Fuel efficient: The best mileage I've get was around 41kmpl and and average mileage is around 35-38kmpl

                          2) Cheap spare parts: Ripped exhaust cover? It cost just ₹250. Ripped fairing by accidental drop? Roughy cost 1k for each side.

                          3) Service: 6 free services and extra 2 year extended warranty for just ₹777. And service cost less than ₹500. There're no free services in KTM. Basic service charges will alone cost you ₹2k without including engine oil. **Happy R15 customer**

                          4) Build quality: Again, it's labelled as KTM but at some point it's Bajaj. No offense to KTM fans but everytime I visit Kawasaki's service center I've seen people crying about electrical issues on bike.

Yes, Duke is a great bike at affordable price but personally I prefer to choose quality over quantity(25bhp Duke).

Please dont misguide people, you get 3 free services with Duke, plus the average cost of a paid service will be in tune of 2.6k, including engine oil, which alone costs 1200+

Sorry but i think you are wrong engine oil of R15 itself cost 550 and other consumables cost extra even you are in free service and if you go for paid service it will cost you around 1100 something

About KTM quality is good and at price its offering is i think we should not complain. We should accept the fact that nothing is perfect.

Yes R15 is great bike i can proudly say after two years of ownership but ktm is also not behind it which i observed after owning 390.
