  • Bajaj Avenger models

Fellow riders, I am a recent graduate who's been riding a tvs wego for 4 years. It's time for next step. Physically I am 5'4" & 60kg. The wego is gonna stay, it will bee used for short rides & city traffic. I want a comfortable motorcycle for medium to long range travel. Since my budget is 60k max and being my first bike I want to go for a used one. My heart kinda set on bajaj avenger. But I don't know that a used avenger is a good idea or not because of of Bajaj engine's reputation or which model is best.
Here are few things which are important to me.

    1. Mileage per liter.
    2. Kickstarter - it's not essential, more like a failsafe mechanism. I don't know whether the new engines support adding this feature.
    3. Oil cooling - NOT important. I believe simplicity gives less problems. Also the size of radiator seems too small to make any huge improvement.
    4. NO pillion riders. In fact I am thinking about removing the backrest for better appearance and to save some weight. Maybe it improve aerodynamics too [emoji2].

So, does the avenger suit me? Which model is the best one? If someone can provide a brief history of avenger models it would be great. Also does the 180 model give better fuel economy?

And please don't bother to suggest a TB, I want something reliable and some say it's not, besides it won't fit my budget.

    Query Approved

The Avenger should do well by you, provided you get a good deal.

It is better to spend a little more to get a good deal, than to try saving a few thousands today to suffer later! Preferably buy from someone you know.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Brother, avenger is a capable tourer, and a second hand one will fit your budget, but keep a few grands extra for complete overhauling and servicing, so that you may not get any surprises in the middle of your first long trip.

Secondly I would like to tell you a bit about oil cooling. Its not what it sounds like. The engine is air cooled and the thing you are calling a radiator is an oil reservoir. The proper term would be "oil is cooled". It means that extra engine oil is kept in the small reservoir (which you think is a radiator) and when the oil in the engine heats up to a certain level , the cool oil form the reservoir flows to the engine lowering the oil temperature. In liquid cooled engines, there is a proper radiator with a radiator fan, a coolant reservoir, and engine is designed in such a way that there are channels that enable the coolant to flow through outside of engine cooling it down, also the radiator fan further helps to bring down the temperature.

It is common misconception that oil cooled(Pulsar 220, avenger) and liquid cooled(R15, CBR) engines are the same. People owning a pulsar 220 for years still think they have a liquid cooled engine, and if you ask them what type of coolant their bike uses, they are speechless.

So brother, I repeat the engine is air cooled, not liquid cooled, or oil cooled, it is the oil that is cooled by replacing some of it from the reservoir. Hope this will help you in making an informed decision. Happy bike hunting. All the best.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Almost everything has already been explained in the post above. In addition to that, you can visit the ownership thread :

If the bike is in good condition, there's no reason you should not choose it. And maybe after 2-3 years, upgrade to something else.
        Best of luck!

Buying a second hand bike will always be a pain unless you know the owner.. You will never know the history of the bike.. How much the bike has been abused, how much torture it had bared..

But if that is the only option you have, take a reliable mechanic with you knows in and outs of motorcycles. get him to test ride and give the feedback on the bike.. check for damage, check for oil leakage from the engine/head. check the exhaust hole at the back for any possible smoke..

Avenger is a comfortable bike, no doubt. infact a perfect long ride machine.. but forget about the FE if you are going for a second hand bike..

spending extra Gandhi jis could get you a better bike and at the same time, the seller might quote higher than the actual cost of the bike.. so beware of such frauds as well..

regarding the oil cooler.. it is just a little support to the air cooled engines..

You can go for the Avenger 220 if you get a good bike for a good price
