  • Help choosing first sport bike..

I am writing this on behalf of my friend...
    I am 5'5, average built.
I currently own a pulsar 180, I am looking for a good looking bike under 10 lakhs.. I will be using it on occasional city rides and weekend highway blasts.. No specific brand.. Good looks and power around 100hp are the preferences,
I am looking for Kawasaki Z800 or Triumph street triple.. I would like to know which is the best bike in the price range.. If there are any bikes launching by July 2015 I can wait for them as well.. This bike will probably stay with me for a long time.. I would like to make the best choice.. Please help

      First of all congrats,

Z800 is a decent choice with ABS as standard, and TNT899 from Benelli stable is around the corner and waiting for the official launch and booking in India. But sans ABS, I dont know how is it going to be performing and being a new brand , a little thought is needed before investing. But its definitely a looker.

Also CBR650, another I-4 is around the corner for launch, but dont know when. If it comes, it will be the cheapest and most reliabale I-4.

All imported bikes will cost you a little on your pocket whislt maintenance and needs special care. For street looking brawl performance and sweet I-4 music, go for Z800.

The CBR650 is going to be priced around 8 lakhs when launched according to reports. Which makes it lose out on the VFM factor, so the Z800 will be the best choice when it comes to I-4s.

+1 for Z800. The looks, the Jap build quality, technology, reliability is second to none.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Z800 is better while buying. You get more power for less money compared to Triumph.
BUT, maintenance wise, you'll bleed the first 2 years.

Going through Z800's ownership reports from users in BLR, you'd end up spending close to 2 big ones in the warranty period minus accidents alone!
Triumph service/maintenance is about half the amount than Z's. Triumph has longer service intervals too.

Take a TR and get the bike you want as both are awesome machines.

Edit - I hope you're aware that Triumph ST on sale in India makes 79 hp and not 106.

Yes, I am aware of that, if only it made 106hp, I would have been riding it now..
I heard with some mods it can be boosted up, which is y triumph is still in consideration..

Umm, well... You would lose out on the warranty even if you get the titanium valves + bigger filters + arrow exhausts + new maps from Triumph itself (you get 100 odd hp with these combined).
That is a hindrance. Isn't 79 hp enough? People were enjoying the same bike before the fiasco.

I haven't ridden the ST, but I definitely think 79 HP is enough, I set my eyes on it when i thought it made 106hp, knowing that it doesn't, is kinda holding me back..

Take TR. If you have a friend who can give you a longish TR or you can arrange for the same at the dealership, then good.
I do feel 79 hp is enough because we're hardly able to control 43!

P.S - I am not batting for Triumph. Just that Z's maintenance expenditure burned my heart.

You can! BTW, I have as much experience as you w.r.t the dealership. I guess, taking help from an existing owner would be prudent. Tagging @shadyabhi and @hifisharu.

Re: Help choosing first sport bike..

Hi Gurudatt, My reply is specific to your requirement, based on the specs that you have provided initially. Since your friend is 5'5" the Z800 will be a major PIA to handle around, considering it is heavier and the saddle height is higher than the Striple. Also, the handle bars are further away and will be difficult to handle inside the city. Go ahead with the Z if you feel he can handle it. Also, in my case, I found the pillion seat very useable in the case of the Street, whereas the Z800 has a higher seat ad no grab rails for the pillion to hold on to, which would have been a major negative for me.

I won't say much on the power fiasco, as I can see, people go only by marketing literature and decide more is better. As Divyasharan has pointed out, the 79PS of the Triple is more than we can exploit on the road and the bike can be tuned back to around 100 horses with a Rs1500 part swap. If you look at value for money, yes the Z800 seems better, as in more power and one more cylinder extra. But question yourself if more is better in this case. Do read up some comparisons between the two bikes, have a ride and then decide. All the Best

DS, I am planning to go for Z800 in the future unless 650F comes soon. Do you think it will be hard buy and maintance after that. You can respond from your perspective, If the maintenance is going to take a toll, then I will have to reconsider my choice. Please help me here since I dont want to end up spending 9L and cribbing later.
