  • New bike for older cousin - CBR150R , Gixxer and Pulsar

    Hey,

My older cousin needs a new bike because his hero passion became old and started giving problems. He is working and he needs a premium executive kind of 150cc - 200cc motorbike.

He is 6"2' tall and needs a relaxed ride.

I suggested him gixxer which he likes but he also likes Honda CBR 150R. He personally feels CBR more comfortable than r15. His requirements are as follows:

    1. Good fuel efficiency
    2. Comfort for long city commutes and for long weekend ride.
    3. A craze for fat rear tyre. Also he insists that those are more stable and he wants them also because of that.
    4. Powerful engine for some fun in 150-200CC category.
    5. The bike should not need any mods as in changing a part of the vehicle just because the stock comes with a very normal one. This is for long term as well.
    6. Good brakes.

Keeping in mind the last point I suggested Pulsar 200 NS hoping that it comes with good tyres now, like MRF over eurogrip. I've seen it only once where the owner said it was stock. But both of us haven't yet checked out in the showrooms.

I also wanted to suggest apache 180 with or without ABS but he is just too tall for that and he personally feels it cramped and painful for his back. Also the lack of fat rear tyre doesnt appeal to him.

I had ran out of options and I wish to get more options here so that my close cousin and friend gets a very suitable bike. He is not on Xbhp and I am posting it on his behalf.

    Thanks.

For a good height and build, 200NS will be the perfect package. It is a tall bike with a good liquid cooled engine and 23Ps of power, a fat rear tyre as well. It should tick all the requirements.

RTR is too small and he may feel cramped after a while, Gixxer is good too.
CBR150R may go out of production, because of low sales of the model. Research before you opt for it.

Take test rides and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

CBR sales in Chennai is good I guess. Almost all the showrooms around the city have it in stock. I want to know about the tyres in Pulsar 200 NS.

Yes the bike is in stock all over India, the problem is the sales chart never went up to the expected number. It was just flying news I herd a few months ago. Anyways, If it suits you, go for it.

Pulsar 200NS now comes with good and grippy MRF tyres. The old crappy eurogrips have been removed. The new MRFs are a great improvements over the older eurogrips and good grip on dry as well as wet roads. but some old stock might still be present at the showroom with old tires, so make sure you check the tires before buying.

Re: New bike for older cousin - CBR150R , Gixxer and Pulsar

The CBR 150 has very bad low end torque as ive heard, havent ridden it myself but low torque will be difficult to ride with in a city or with traffic
pulsar 200ns on the other hand has quite enough torque although low
but good enough for traffic with a little getting used to
and pulsar 200ns also gives very good fuel efficiency when ridden gently and very good power and little less fuel efficiency when required
during the first 2 months with my NS I used to get 54kmpl as I used to ride it very gently but if I ride it hard I get 35kmpl
I still get 40-45kmpl with mixed riding
and the NS is absolute value for money and also saves fuel money
the CBR 150, not so much

but obviously every one has different views and may see the NS as a cheap indian bike and the CBR is after all a honda. honda bikes are very refined and made with calculations and almost negligible vibrations
the NS vibrates a little but it wont bother if your not concerned about vibrations
but honda parts are expensive and may last forever, babaj parts are cheap so if u have an accident you wont worry about the cost
honda bikes are very high quality
if u go for an NS ul hav to take care of it well but not that you cannot use it roughly
I use mine very roughly and no problems so far
and seating possition of the NS is quite comfortable for long rides and if your tall
the tyres on the NS are quite wide and ive heard they've stsrted to come with MRF tyres
              the brakes are awesome
              control is good too
I can ride at 140kmph on a winding road and bike wont fish tail

Sir, my cousin doesn't like the new color schemes and is skeptical about the refinement after he has ridden that. Other than that he feels it has good power. Also we are yet to check the new tyres. I am not being judgemental nor this is my view. Because I had considered to buy NS as my first bike. My cousin who is going to be the owner feels bad for getting the tag of 'copied bike' and just not happy with it. So it will be his last resort. Please note that this is what people had been telling him and its not our judgement for its a very good bike indeed.

Now there is a little confusion between gixxer and CBR150R, both being highly refined.

Visited KUN honda gain for test drive of unicorn 160 and CBR150R. They said there is new honda CBR150R coming in one month with higher price. But I was still unsure of its launch.

Sir how is the refinement? I think the upright position would be comfortable for the rider. But refinement on long term? cbr150r and gixxer are refined and I have witnessed it. So I can suggest my cousin without any doubt. But I haven't ridden NS for long. So please help with this.

Ensure proper run in and regular oil changes when necessary and the NS will come a long way. Refinement is based mainly on run in and maintenance. Maintain I the NS well and it will be refined for sure. I wouldn't recommend Honda as I've heard their quality is deteriorating for the past few years making it not worth for the money paid. Also, honda's higher spares cost can hamper maintenance. If refinement is top priority, then either the suzuki or Honda fulfills it. If value for money is priority, NS tops the list.

Are the vibrations on NS more than the duke200? or gixxer? Because now duke200 is also on radar since it packs more power. I am cutting out honda cbr150r as I enquired about it today at a honda showroom. So now it could be p200ns,gixxer or duke200 at the max. Duke200 is the last option.

For me choice would be like this :-

                          1. Duke 200 - if you want crazy acceleration, awesome handling and fat 150 section tyre too. But general servicing cost would be on slight higher side as compared to other two bikes.

                          2. P200 NS - Most VFM among the three 23 bhp power gives both decent power and mileage figures. Have some vibes but at that price point its negligible.

                          3. Gixxer - Good bike with refined engine and best FE among the three and in maintenance it will be cheap too. But on performance side it loses to above three options.

All three bikes are good in their respective fields but if you want a mixture then you should go for 200 NS.

                          Ride safe

Brother, to tell you the truth - nothing comes close to the Japanese bikes in terms of refinement. Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha, will always be superior to Indian companies (TVS,Bajaj, Hero) in terms of refinement, build quality and fit and finish. No offense to anyone, but truth is truth. But Indian companies give value for money, they give you maximum bang for the buck. So you have to spend 1.3 lakhs on a 150cc Jap bike and you get the best of everything, but Indian companies give you 200cc for just 1 lack with more power, but not so smooth and refined engines. Remember, not everybody can spend 1.3 lakhs and most of the people think it is a waste of money to spend such a huge amount of money on a 150cc bike. For them Indian bikes are best value for money, for some people money is not a major concern and they want the best of the best, they choose Japs. So ask your cousin if he wants a power monster or a refined and focused bike. and then suggest him according to his requirements.

So to each, its own. Now coming to refinement of 200NS, its not that bad when compared to other Indian bikes (RTR). Few vibrations do come at certain RPM range but they are not so much that it may bother a rider. But then again I ride a R15, a Jap master piece, so I may feel it more as compared to my R15. While a person with a RTR may say NS is pretty smooth compared to his bike. It all depends on what we are comparing it with. You will forget about vibrations when you open the throttle, the power surge is amazing.

But overall, the bike is reasonably refined, have lots of power, fairly good at corners, and as it is with all pulsars - front heavy (again comparing it to R15 which has perfect weight distribution and is the best handling bike in India). The seating position is rider friendly and not painful like R15 so you can tour on it for hours without hurting your back, the power makes riding on highways a joy, it reaches 100 in no time. All in all it is a very good value for money bike.

I would advice you to take a long test ride on it. You see, a 5 minute test ride will tell you more about a bike more than a week of reading reviews. The sound of the engine, the bite of the brakes, how the bike behaves in real life traffic conditions, how easy is it to maneuver with a pillion on back seat, is the riding comfortable or not etc etc. Take as many test rides as you want, it is your hard earned money, spend it wisely after making sure you are satisfied with whatever you are buying.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I am done with test riding cbr150r, r15, duke200 and gixxer. The problem is, my cousin and I live at different ends of the city and we meet up only during the weekend. There is no proper bajaj showroom in my area and my cousin doesn't want to go alone. But as far as his experiences at service centres, alone, he feels hero service is nice as he owned a passion and they were kind to it whenever needed.

It's just as expected, the younger ones in most families are more enthusiastic towards bikes and I being the one here, push him to try different bikes. He went for suzuki gixxer test ride alone and just like you said and as my cousin and I witnessed japanese bikes are built so well and thy're uber refined. Today, we rode a unicorn160 but it doesn't feel special but definitely super refined. Also about Bajaj again, my cousin's nearest dealership said they do not have a 200NS for test ride. So we have to search for another big show room when we meet and test ride one.

My friends who own japanese bikes(r15, gixxer) says they feel no fatigue due to rough engines and suggest strongly to choose it for the long run and also for long distance touring. That being said, I now have to test pulsar 200 NS for its refinement and then decide after a discussion with my cousin.
