  • What bike do I purchase? Yahama YZF-R15 or Bajaj Pulsar RS200?

Hey guys, I was wondering what bike to buy as my first bike. I'm confused between the R15 and pulsar RS200( non ABS version). It will be my first bike and I'm an amateur rider, having ridden only about 50 km till date. I want a good looking fully faired bike which would offer a good mileage at 100kmph and is safe to ride( with a good braking system).
    1. Budget: About Rs. 1.4 lakh.
    2. Age: 21 years.
    3. Height: 5 feet 10 inches.
    4. Weight: 70 kg but planning on increasing to 85 eventually.
    5. Intended usage: College commute and weekend recreation riding.
    6. Fuel efficiency required: About 40 kmpl.
    7. City and highway usage: I live in thane on the highway so majority usage will be on highways only.
    8. Approximate daily running: About 72 kilometers to and from college, but I won't be taking it every day of the week.
    9. City of residence: Ghodbunder road,Thane(w), 400607
    10. Bike of preference: Either the Yamaha R15 or the Bajaj pulsar RS200.

Awaiting expert advice, please let me know at the earliest.

I own the R15v2. The way I maintain it, its a gem.
      Returns 47+kmpl.
(People like Saquib and Sachin get 55+).

I've taken it on long rides. It's extreme fun.
In traffic my palms hurt. So do my wrists.

Sometimes I feel I could do with more power, slightly less leaned over posture and better lamps.

That's where the RS takes the lead.

      It has more power.
      Would give the same FE.
      Has better lamps.
      An easier posture.
      Cheaper spares.
All just for a few grands more.

But if you are not too keen on the RS200, I'd suggest you get the Adventure Sports.

It has a fairing that will perform well on the highways.
      Has a projector.
      Same ergonomics as RS.
      No FI though.
And is a full rupees 3 cheaper than the NS, despite the fairing and rupees 30,000 cheaper than the RS.
      Strong advice, get the AS.

        1. Budget: About Rs. 1.4 lakh.
No bike in that budget is safe at 100 kmph! Also, you care for mileage at such speeds?

Anyways, I'd want to say that you should opt for R15 because not only is it an established product, but it is "less" powerful than your option 2 because of your limited experience on 2 wheels, but then why should you miss out on 6 horses for the same price?

What you get with the new RS vs R15?
        1. Awesome lights on the RS. In fact, R15's stock lamps suck!
        2. More relaxed riding stance w.r.t R15.
        3. Cheaper spares. Now, people might start on Bajaj's QA issues, but they're improving! They're no Yamaha in quality though!
        4. Good brakes, going by NS's braking. R15 has great braking.
        5. Decent tires from MRF. R15's maybe a bit better.
        6. Heavy by ~25 kg when compared to R15. Initially, you may face slight issues in traffic. Will learn the art in a month or two.
        7. RS will have lesser mileage than R15, but still decent for its class.
        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Even thou you are new rider I would suggest RS200.
Others have already mentioned the pros and cons but I am emphasizing on the power output. 24.5 PS will keep you satisfied for next 2-3 years. If you buy R15 you may later regret for the power even thou it is no less powerful for Indian roads.

Yamuna express way to and fro.
Get the RS200 ,speaking from r15 ownership.
You know ,yes it is yamaha, it's niggle free ,its yamaha, quality top notch etc etc but IT JUST STOPS THERE..
you will die for the power hunger .
It takes ages to reach 100kmph, though once you there ,you can do it all day.
              Get Rs200 bang for buck.

don't take it as bashing but i would give you my honest opinion.
none of them will give you 40kmpl if you do 100
also if you plan to ride at 100 then forget bout FE.

now coming to your riding experience i would suggest you to do atleast a cpl of thousand km riding before picking up any new faired bike specifically
and to get some time with highway. even a 8 bhp machine in wrong hands can show you the road. so my friend i would suggest you to start riding
a two-wheeler if any home now for some time. atleast few months and then go ahead with a faired bike.

a new powerful machine at your age on highway with 50 km riding experience is not a wise decision. just my opinion..
and forget bout mileage part on any bike if you do 100kmph..

50km experience and non abs version? Brother you need ABS. if possible dual channel or combined. but one of your preferences have single channel and its safer for you. If you get the RS, learn to ride in empty streets during sundays when traffic is less and only then take it out to college. It will hardly take a month or two. cheers!

Don't be obedient with guys suggesting not to get a bike with 50km experience.
                    I had
                    10kms experience of p150 when I bought 200NS.
700kms of 200ns experience when R15 came in (this bike kinda sucked ,so didn't rode it much ) .
And about 5000kms exp if 200ns when RC 200 came in (its great ).
As long as you HAVE patience, self preservance, full concentration and clear picture in your mind of where you want to reach first ,home or hospital, your can even start with RC390 AS YOUR FIRST BIKE.

Would recommend you the RTR 200.The FI,Pirelli and ABS Version (Top-end) variant will be on the Showrooms in April and will cost the same as the R15.Delivers better build quality and better long term reliability than Bajaj.

You are saying that a bike that is yet to come in the market has better build quality than a bike already in the market? Seems kind of unfair.

Not Unfair. The people who has seen and ridden the bike (PowerDrift) has said that the RTR has a great Build Quality. It has always been that way.Even the current RTR 160/180s have better build quality than the Pulsar DTSI Models,I'm not sure about how it compares with the AS/NS and RS Versions of Pulsars though.
