  • Which bike for touring?

    Hi
I am looking to buy a second hand bike for occasional touring. I am fairly competent with mechanical work to maintain the bike on my own and if necessary strip and rebuild any of the bike components. Would be grateful for advice and suggestions.

    1. Budget: Rs 50,000 (could stretch a bit more)
    2. Age: still young in mind

    4. Weight: 65 kgs
    5. Intended usage: This bike is intended specifically for occasional touring and will not be used much otherwise
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any): not an issue
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: see 5
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: see 5
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing): Mumbai
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any): I am leaning towards the Pulsar series

    Thanks!

    Query Approved

Since i am not very well versed with used bike prices, not quite sure what you will get in 50k. 150cc bikes would probably be available in that price bracket.

Buying a used Pulsar is a bit of a gamble, because for some reason owners choose not to maintain their bikes and would typically be in a bad condition. Also considering you have ridden some of the best bikes in the past, the humble Pulsar might not be something you would like.

How about a Yamaha like the FZ?

Thanks for the reply. Am very open to advice and quite flexible in terms of model and budget but certainly don't wish to go beyond 1 lakh (have just purchased a rc390 and the wife may start objecting a bit!)
      Also I won't be carrying a pillion.

And how could i forget the Karizmas. If you can get a well maintained Karizma, the older model, then nothing like it.

Of course if you are willing to stretch your budget to a lakh and have a soft corner for the Pulsar, then a brand new AS200 could be got. Do away with the headache of a used bike!

A <2012 Karizma or a <2013 CBR 250R non ABS (yes you read it right!). Better if you look at states like RJ/GJ where people usually don't buy these bikes. Resale values plummet like anything!

            Re: Which bike for touring?

A new bike is obviously the best option I suppose. I don't have a bias towards any bike (in fact have never ridden a Pulsar, just that I have heard good things about it). Thetefore am flexible in terms of models. If by chance I can find a well maintained secondhand bike I would go for it.
I think the advice I will get on Xbhp will help me make a shortlist and so far:

            Pulsar AS 200 (new)
            Karizma 2009-2012 (used)
            Yamaha FZ 2013 onwards (used)
Honda CBR 250R 2013 (used, non ABS)

Could you please tell me which model/year FZ I should be looking for?

            Thanks

Ps sorry about such basic questions but I am totally unfamiliar with the Indian bike models

Please don't mind this question. I am surprised you don't want to use the RC390. Why?

As for the touring comfort, I would suggest Karizma (you can find a good sparingly used 2009~2012 model and bargain for about 60-70K) , FZ is good (2013 or later model because they fixed small issues, this comes with a kicker too) but CBR is expensive even for the second hand market you cannot find one for less than 1L.
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

Hi. Various factors to answer your question. The RC is in Hyderabad but the second bike will be kept in Mumbai. I visit Mumbai every month and I also need a bike for some minimal local commuting. The plan therefore is to dedicate/mod this bike for touring too.
Other factors (at least for me) are the RC is not really a bike designed for touring. Tiring and painful for longer journeys and the suspension is too hard being more track oriented. Further if it breaks down spares and service may become an issue. Lastly I am more happier using something cheaper for touring and won't feel that bad if it gets damaged.
                Cheers

Patience is key. I know people who've got it for ~65k. Not bad/accident bike either. You need to wait and approach the right person with cash in hand.
Also, avoiding cities like Chennai/Mumbai/Bangalore is important. Target a city where resale is low.

Gotta agree with you.. Buying from a city where the resale value is low is the key to get big bikes at low cost

Think there is some guy/startup which is fixing karizma engine in impulse and giving a warranty of 1 year. Karizma's engine would be 40k + impulse cost. I saw their page on facebook and its in Mumbai.
