• What bike for daily long commuting?

As per Krishna77's request, starting a new thread.

I know it might sound insane (as many of my friends / well wishers said), but I'm looking for a bike for daily commuting. The total distance per day covered would be approx 200Kms. Around 170 - 180 Kms will be highway. Taking into consideration the distance to be covered, I'd prefer to go for a cruiser bike. Can you please suggest good cruiser bikes? The features which I look for are
1. Comfort
2. Reliability
3. After Sales Service & its cost

I narrowed down to Hyosung Aquilla 250 & HD Street 750. Would like to know which one is better considering the points I mentioned above. If there are other bikes to be considered, I am also open for it too.

Some more details which might be useful (courtesy - Krishna77)

1. Budget - Upto 5L, can stretch to 6L if it is worthy
2. Age - 35yrs
3. Height - 5' 8"
4. Weight - 65Kg
5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.) - Office usage
6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) - 20+KmpL (preferable)
7. City & Highway percentage usage - 80% Hightway 20% City
8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - 200Kms Daily
9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing) - City, road is good
10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any) - Open for all

Bhai, 200 kms roz kaa, kahaa rehte ho aur office kahaan par hai.

I guess another 0 was added accidentally.

Jokes apart, you can test ride the following :

1. Benelli 300, 600i, 600gt.
2. Kawasaki Ninja 650
3. Kawasaki Er6n

My suggestion would be to go for ninja 650. Less windblast due to fairing, high speed stability, can do 160-170kmph all day. Mileage seems decent you can easily sqeeze out more than 20. Most reliable bike in middle sports category. Atleast in INDIA. Ninja 650 is a tried and tested machine, no second thoughts on that. You can check the ownership thread about maintenance cost and spares.

The same goes for benelli 600 gt, but since its a new brand in India, any words on ASC cannot be said as they are still setting up. Read benelli 300 ownership thread and was shocked to see such a experience from experimentalhead

Rest all are nakeds but can get the job done. If you are not into high speed cruising.

If I would spend close to 5 lacs, I would stay away from HYOSUNG. Because its less reliable. No offense to owners.

The best bet would be to select something from kawasaki stable.

It will be too early to comment on the reliability of benellis and Hyosung is a big no no.

Cheers,
Sanjay

Re: What bike for daily long commuting?

I would rather suggest N300 at max or a CBR 250R. Use the remainder on safety gears and fuel.

Amongst Aquila 250 and HD 750, I don't think either would take the abuse of 200km daily for too long.

Severely OT- Why not a car?

Ninjaa 300, riding position will take a toll.

CBR is almost extinct.

Severely severly OT : change the office

Re: What bike for daily long commuting?

Among the existing lot, I'd suggest Ninja300/Benelli300. Specially the Ninja is a tried and tested one. Monthly 5K should not be that much of problem.
Benelli is relatively new but owners have given good feedback so far.
Like others, I'd not suggest you Hyosung as I personally do not rate them too high. Again, no offense to the owners. It's my personal opinion.
HD is not exactly a commuter. Its better suited for longer tours.
Else, you can also wait for a month or two for the R25/R3.
But regardless of whichever bike you go for, 200km of daily usage can and will take its toll on your health. Don't take it otherwise, but I'd suggest you to consult a good doctor to get a fair idea about whether your body is prepared for this or not.
Best of luck!

A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

I strongly suggest you get a car either new or used.
200 kms daily will eventually take a toll on your body no matter what bike you get. Plus safety is an issue while using bikes on highways.
You can always get a bike for the love of riding but not for your intended purpose.

I currently do 150 kms daily on a P220.

It depends on a number of factors:

Traffic conditions - My office commute is from Greater Noida to Gurgaon. I travel 80% highways and 20% city. While going to office in the morning there is almost nil traffic, however while returning the stretch has 60 % choc-a-bloc city traffic and 40% free expressway traffic. The bikes you have suggested might heat up if you encounter extensive traffic. Also the engine would be stressed out with stop go situations. Weaving in and out of traffic ( Disclaimer - not cutting traffic but safely changing lanes ) is an important factor to save time . Considering that Ninja 300 should be good, if you can manage the bike in traffic. I ride my 220 like Discover.

Oil - This would be the most important aspect. The engine smoothness will go for a toss with the daily abuse. Suggested oils would be synthetic to semi-synthetic. I have used ranges of oil from Motul 7100/5100 to Bajaj DTSI. Trust me all of them loose their viscosity after 2000K. However suggested to use a better grade for better engine performance.

Riding Style - I ride at constant speeds to 80 to 90kmph if the traffic is less. Remember it would be a marathon and not a sprint. The faster you go the more tired you would feel owing to wind blast, vibes, etc. Also in traffic if you encounter will take a toll on your joints for the constant clutch, brake. You have to be aware of the surrounding traffic and not have concentration lapses since such a long commute daily gets monotonous sometimes.

Also remember your bike would receive nudges and scrapes from idiotic bikers and cars on the road, hence you would not like your 5+ bike to be manhandled and not able to react to the situation.

I would suggest go for a lower bracket of vehicle. Any bike above 200cc should do the job. The regular wear and tear on your bike will ensure its depreciation faster than the money spent.

Re: What bike for daily long commuting?

Thank you all for the different replies & suggestions.

Yeah! it sounds weird to travel 200Kms daily for work. But that is the only option you have when you have a family, when both of you are working, when your kid is in school & when your parent or in laws are not in a position to be with you.

Some suggested going for car instead of bike. But many a times what I have see is I loose my tempered on seeing the way other riders drive & it affects my mood & my day. But when I ride a bike "I feel like God...forgiving others"!! . Since I have driven in other countries too, I follow & stick on to most of the driving rules / courtesies. I'm driver on both my car & bike in a relaxed manner & maintain a decent speed. But with my almost 17yrs of driving experience, i feel more stressed riding the car in our country than the bike, due to the traffic, lane jumpers & other senseless drivers.

Regarding the riding style, I'm not a fan of sports bikes & so am not happy with its riding position. That is why I prefer a cruiser kind of riding position. I had a pulsar 150 which i sold almost 3yrs back & still have LML Energy. Apart from the power, I feel comfortable with the riding position of LML Energy compared to pulsar, as pulsar was giving me pain on my arms & shoulder due to it riding posture
