  • Looking for a Premium Commuter Bike, 125 CC or 150 CC ?

    Hello All

I am new to this forum and I am looking for suggestions from the experts over here. I am looking for a premium commuter bike to drive in Bangalore.
As many of you know traffic is pathetic in Bangalore and believe me many drive over footpaths too

Below are my requirements in the order of preferance
    1) Stability while taking corners
    2) Mileage (50 to 60 KMPL)
    3) Looks (prefer digital cluster and front disc brake)
    4) Spares and Maintenance

I am a person aged 38 Yrs with a hefty personality of 110 to 115 Kilos and a height of 5' 8". I already own a Wego for my wife so scooter is not an option.
For around 16 Yrs I used KB 4S Champion which is close to 95,000 Kms and believe me it is still good but have to get rid of it due to spares unavailability.

Below are the few bikes that I have test driven and my impressions on each of them
    1) Bajaj Pulsar 150 CC DTS-i : Looks good, pick up is good but too much wobbly while acceleration.
    2) Bajaj Discover 150 CC DTS-i: Pulsar was far better and I didn't feel it stable while taking turns (tried both Fairer and Non-Fairer options)
    3) Honda CB Shine 125: Was OK at looks but I felt the pick up was poor and didn't feel anyway better than Discover 150
    4) Honda CB Unicorn 160: This was the one that impressed me a lot, I liked it for all the 3 preferences I mentioned but I need your thoughts on the bike.
    5) New 2015 TVS Phoenix 125: I would rate this after Unicorn and above all other 125 CC bikes. The vehicle was damn good and the features were top notch like digital cluster, disc breaks, nice and calm engine with good pick up. Need thoughts on this vehicle
    6) Hero Xtreme and Xtreme Sports: Vehicle was OK but sitting comfort was too poor.

Heard of Suzuki GS150 R but it seems Suzuki has stopped selling this bike and Gixxer is too sporty for me.

First I am confused if I have to go with 125 CC or 150 CC, could the experts suggest the options and also the vehicles which I can still consider available in the market.

    Thanks
    -Srini

    Query Approved

Hey Srini. You seem to have resolved your queries yourself.

The Unicorn 160 is tailor made for your requirements. I would suggest you to go for it.

In case you are looking for a 125, the Phoenix is a really good bike, though terribly underrated.

I am surprised that the GS150R is not being sold, no news about that, though i have heard of dealers not willing to stock it, since they want to sell more Gixxers. The GS was another bike perfect for your requirements.

Also check the Yamaha SZ series before you make a final decision. A good bike which will do a lot of work without fuss.

Between, 150 or 125. My suggestion would be go for the 150. A little more torque will always be helpful for carrying the extra weight, especially useful if you take a pillion along.

    All the best!

      Thank you Monk

Phoenix and Unicorn are in my list but I was also looking for suggestions on other bikes if any that I have missed.

        You can consider:
        1. Yamaha SZRR V2.0
        2. Yamaha SS125
        3. P135
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Among other bikes, i suggested the Yamaha SZ series. Check the post above!

It sells meager numbers; around 50 a month. As @The Monk points out dealers like to work with hot-models!

Test ride both Unicorn 160 & GS150 and pick the one that suits you.

Gixxer155, FZv2.0 are premium commuters no? Not GS150, Pulsar150, Unicorn160. These naming conventions are funny.

Hi Krishna, I had a consideration for SS125 due to its reviews in most of the forums but one drawback I see is the spares availability.
I see many of bike owners facing pain in getting spares for SS125.

Regarding P135, I prefer to be away from Bajaj I really hate the wobbly sounds in Bajaj vehicles.
Bajaj in collaboration with Kawasaki in the past was a good but I do not see that quality now in their vehicles.

Spare parts availability is the biggest problem in the industry as a result people have to compromise.

Yamaha 125 with 5gear is excellent bike.

I think you should cosider SZ-R instead of ss125 because of following reasons:

                  1. More power and torque
                  2. Best in gear acceleration which means it is much easier to ride in city traffic.
                  3. Spares are easily available as it is selling in good numbers in comparison to ss124
                  4. Wider tyres
                  5. ss125 struggles a bit in traffic with pillion.
                  6. Equiped with yamaha blue core tech which gives better mileage.
                  7. Cost-wise its not much expensive than ss125.

Re: Looking for a Premium Commuter Bike, 125 CC or 150 CC ?

Today I test ridden Apache RTR 160 dual disc and the ride was quite thrilling but unfortunately it is not the one I am looking at right now.
So when I visited the Yamaha and TVS showrooms, following the information that I received which was really helpful.

Officially though TVS claims 67 KMPL for Phoenix, customer feedback is always more than 60 KMPL. Apache RTR is nothing more than 45 to 50 KMPL
Yamaha guys confirmed that SZ-RR-V2 gives 50 KMPL in traffic, I assume other SZ models also should be close.

I also started to think if I have to go with CB Unicorn 160 as it seems to be giving 45 to 50 KMPL like Apache.
I'll be doing a test ride of SZ-RR-V2 tomorrow and will give my feedback.

In addition to the bikes mentioned, you could also have a look at the newly launched Yamaha Saluto with a claimed FE of 78 kmpl.

Sorry, Saluto does not come with disc brakes. Its a no frill bike. Enjoyable, and the 125cc mill is actually a copy from the new generation of FZ,SZ 2.0 making use of lighter alloys.

The GS150R is too heavy for city commute. You really ought to try the szrr 2.0 or the Discover 150.
Having used the bike for close to 4 yr and about 25K km, I must say except for some compromise on fuel economy. On the plus side the smooth ride without vibrations at any stage, stable handling, plus the lower rpm torque, you will really love it in city as you don't need to frequently change gears. Go test ride it once.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

Re: Looking for a Premium Commuter Bike, 125 CC or 150 CC ?

After suggestions from some of you, today I went and test driven Yamaha SS125 and Yamaha SZ RR v2.0.
This is the first time after driving RX100, I drove a Yamaha bike and frankly I would like to thank each one of you who suggested to test drive SZ RR 2.0

I loved the low end torque on the bike, no need to change gears frequently. I felt this was missing on Unicorn 160.
I like the vehicle in all the patterns, road handling, grip, comfort, pick up, breaking. With 2.0 they have also added a fat tire on the back and that is really good.
The tire is not the same as FZ series but a good gripping one.

Pulsar 150 is way behind the 2 bikes CB Unicorn 160 and SZ-RR 2.0.

SS125 5 Speed gear was also really good and they said that spares is not an issue. But for some reason after driving SZ RR, SS125 is out of picture.
Having digital cluster was one of my prime considerations but recently I came to know that it is fully dependent on battery power.

The only point where I am still hesitant with SZ-RR V2.0 is about the mileage it offers. User feedback is only between 45 to 50 KMPL.
Do any of you had better mileage experience with SZ RR 2.0 driving in city, I am a general commuter driving between 40 to 60 KMPH.

Hello friends does anyone have thoughts on Hero Hunk 2015, I heard it gives good mileage and also has a lengthier seat than Unicorn and SZ RR V2.
