  • Help me choose an Enfield

Hey, all I'm Ashwin from Hyderabad. I'm looking to get an Enfield, either:

    - Electra 4S
    - Electra 5S
    - Machismo 350

My budget is somewhere around 40 grand. I was thinking rather than buy a prepped secondhand piece, I could get one in rudimentary condition for <15k and have it worked upon by my golden vintage mechanic Anil (a God with Yezdis). Which would be the best? Is the Std. 350 recommended over these? Also, for the Hyderabadis, whom or where can I contact/go to for this purpose?

Also, if I buy an Electra 4S or a Standard with a front drum, can I get the Electra 5S/500LB/T-Bird disc assembly fitted onto it?

      AshwinBK,

If you are looking at a motorcycle which has been put together in a better way, go for the newer Bullets. By newer, I mean bullets manufactured after 2002. At about 40K you should be able to find a good used example of a 3-4 year old STD350. IMHO, they are the better made ones. Also, the STD350 is the original bullet with the right foot gear shift & the timeless thump. Take a test ride. It is a completely different beast compared to the other Enfields. Go for a STD350.

Thanks for your opinion sir! I was wondering, can I fit a disc brake onto the Std? And is it possible to shift the brake pedal to the right and gear shift to the left?

          AshwinBK,

C'mon man. don't call me sir and all. Heck I'm 22 man.

YES, you can fit the disc onto the STD350. The RE website carries a replacement kit.

And don't commit the sacrilege of shifting the brake to the right and gear shifter to the left. Effectively, you'd have killed the STD350 after the mod. Dude, get this plain and clear. The STD350 is one of it's kind. It is a CLASSIC. Don't make mods which will make a motorcycle lose it's character, especially on a classic like the Bullet STD350. Ride a STD350. It is an altogether different feeling. the thump-the feel. Can't explain man. You have to ride it.

If you want a left gear shifter bullet, buy a Machismo AVL350 or an Electra 5S. But, I doubt if you will get a good Electra 5S for 40k.

Sure thing Jay, if i may (shayer bangaya maine ).

I understand the whole character of the Std. now after speaking to some owners and taking a test ride. It was really tough to adjust to the braking/shifting combination and I think it might be a bit tough for me to adapt.

I was thinking if I do not procure a Machismo 350 or Electra 5S I would get an Electra 4S, switch the brake and gearshift on that one, and fit a disc. I'm quite sure I cannot deal with a right-side gearshift Enfield.

Hey ashwin. this is a big statement. and regarding the brakes and gears. i am sure you would get used to it it hapened to me aswell. after that when ever i had to hope on to my yamaha or the bullet that never made any difference to me. i am sure you would blend into it.

Look for a standard. they are easy to tune when it comes to performance. and then no other bullet can ever match the karisma of the Good old Classic looks of the Bullet STD

Hmm I will surely look into it. Perhap's I'd borrow a friend's Std 350 for a week or two and see how things go before rushing headlong into buying anything.

                Thanks for the advice!

                  Hi ashwinBK,

                  Good decision.

                  Take care.

If the thought of using a 'neutral-finder' makes you all queasy, an Electra 4S or the 5S are decent substitutes.

IMO, keep all your options open mate

P.S : Living with a friend's bull for a week is a brilliant idea. See if you can make that happen. Im sure it'll go a long way in assisting with your decision

                      Hi MavericK46,

Buddy, didn't want to offend you but then the neutral finder is also present on the Electra 4S, it is only the 5S amongst CI engined models that doesn't have the traditional gearbox & hence misses out on the neutral finder.

                      Take care.

                        My bad
The Electra 5S is the option with everything on the 'right' side then !

Supposing I got an Electra 4S? Could I get an experienced Thumper mech to switch the sides of the brake and gear shift?

^^Short of a transmission case switch and also a rear brake assembly swap with a 5s, there's no way of getting that done mate.

You'll be in for a lot of expenditure viz. time as well as money to get that done. It would be more worthwhile to pick a 5S or get used to the 4S's ulta system

                            Cheers !

Many thanks again Maverick! Well folks looks like I've narrowed down my POA:

                              - Search for a good Machismo 350AVL/Electra 5S (or even the first gen Thunderbird) in my budget. If that fails:

                              - Look for a good Electra 4S with disc brake in my budget. If that fails:

                              - Buy a Std. 350 and fit the factory disc kit.

Thanks all, you've been of great help. Will post pics of my baby when she's bought and done up!
