  • Help a beginner choose his first bike

    Hello Friends,

I'm Naveen from Chennai. Our family is used to scooters for a long time, so I dont have much experience in riding geared bikes. I decided to buy a bike long back, but for some reasons, I couldn't. I borrowed my uncle's old boxer ct, and has been practicing it for quite some, though I'm ok with gear shifts, still I'm not clean with the clutch usage. But it's time I bought my own bike since I cannot always rely on MTC to travel wherever I needed to go and also I'm interested in doing weekend trips. Hence the decision.

    Budget: 90k
    Age: 25
    Height: 6'0"
    Weight: 87
Intended Usage: Mainly I'm buying this for daily office commute (~40 km a day) atleast 3-4 days a week and also for Occasional weekend rides.
    Fuel efficiency: expecting (45 - 50)
Riding style: Steady and watchful as I'm a beginner. No way I'm gonna go above 80.
City and highway usage: 75% / 25% (My office route is a heavy traffic one)
    Preferred Brand(s): Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda
Pillion seat: good. should be good for ladies also.
My research so far: Yamaha bikes looks good and also are well built to last. Suzuki bikes are also durable, thanks to my uncle's 15yr old max100R still running strong. Honda bikes are also good, especially shine and unicorn. I wanted to buy old unicorn 150 before, but its stopped now. So I decided that if my first bike should be reliable, comfortable and well built and should I have a lasting relationship with it, it should be one among these brands. Also it should be light on my pocket for its running and maintenance. If not for occasional long rides, I would have chosen 110/125cc commuter bikes. So I've decided to go with 150ccs instead.

After much research I've circled upon the following bikes in the order of my preference.

1.FZs-Fi- 95k onroad is really a hefty price tag for a 150cc bike, but I like it's looks better than any other in the segment. Heard it's comfortable and stable also it's efficient over its previous version. FE around 38-45 kmpl.
Hesitant over: Service cost is very high, that every 3 months you have to spend extra 2000 for Fi cleaning alone apart from general servicing costs{another 2000}.

2.SZ-RRv2 - Almost 15k less than FZ with the same engine. No FI, so lesser maintenance cost. Comfortable seats for both pillion and rider. Good looking too.
Hesitant over: Despite it's engine detunement and blue core, still has similar mileage ~ 40-43 kmpl{online reviews}.Should be more considering it's specs right? Also Poor tyres.

    3. Gixxer- Online reviews are flooded with its praisings. looks good but not better than FZs. More powerful. Similar efficiency 38-45 kmpl.
Hesitant over : Bad pillion seat, Let alone ladies, not even my father can sit comfortably on it. Fzs's is way better. No service centres nearby.

It should be among the above 3. Just for the buffer, the 4th one.

    4. Unicorn160- Frankly I liked the old version better. This one looks average. more like a plastic bike to me {untill now discover had that 'plastic' tag}. Every time it passses by, I think its some old bike, only after noticing its H shaped tail lamp, I'm able to recognize it as 2015 uni 160. Only advantage : more powerful 162cc engine. Similar mileage ~45 kmpl.
hesitant over: user reviews in mouthshut.com indicates lots of issues like, bad suspension, bad gearbox, heating issues, oil leakage etc. Also heard of pathetic servicing by honda and costly spares.

Any other users' inputs would be much appreciated as I don't rely on expert reviews of the bikes, like which bike would be really suitable for me in the long run. Since I'm new to bikes, it should not give me problems like skidding, or sudden stops in the middle of nowhere, etc. Also clear my doubts regarding FE part. I dont think I'm a little over-expecting, 50kmpl from a 150cc.

Just to clarify, the SZ has the engine from FZ version 1, and not the new FZ.

No. Both have the same 149cc engine. SZ with 1ps less power and a carburettor.

Bro, you don't have to clean the fi every in every service. The gap is something around 5k kms. Go with it as it will give you the best feeling as you are not looking for just power. It has enough power for a new rider. Also it has a more refined engine as compared to other bikes in the same segment.

5000kms once is manageable. Do you know what is the regular service interval of FZS-fi?

First service is 1000 kms or 30 days which ever is first. After that every 90 days. Service cost is around 550.

Friends, I'm looking to use the bike for prolonged time. So which bike among the above is likely to last long, like 5 years down the line, it should still be running fine without any major problems?. It would be a vital factor in deciding my bike.

From that list, either the Honda or the Yamaha.

Take a look at the Hero MotoCorp bikes lineup, i think they come with 5 year warranty as well. Since, u wont be doing speeds above 80, don't bother about bhp.

Take a look at the New Hero Achiever (150cc) ; Hero Hunk (150cc)

Should do the trick for you. and will be cheaper than the models u listed and will give u good mileage

I would suggest you to pick the Unicorn 160, considering your list and preferences. Don't go for FZ, I'd vouch for the older FZ but the new V2.0 is just not worth it. They have compromised on the performance and the looks, well they are not as good as the older version FZ, there is absolutely no improvements from the previous FZ, only the price has gone up and it is not a VFM product anymore. Gixxer is the best pick, but since you don't have service center, its better you stick to the Honda. Just head over to your nearest Honda showroom and test ride it and also check reviews about the nearest Honda service and take the call.

                              Naveen,

Go for the FZ-fi version. Considering your requirements, this one seems to suit all. Fi doesnt need cleaning for every service. There should be some interval. Also servicing will be done 4 times a year.

Did you manage to take a TD of this vehicle. Mileage might not be over 45, but should be around 40. Which route in Chennai you take for work ?

If you are ready to wait for a while longer, new Hunk might pop-up anytime.
