Did you manage to take a TD of this vehicle. Mileage might not be over 45, but should be around 40. Which route in Chennai you take for work ?

If you are ready to wait for a while longer, new Hunk might pop-up anytime.

    Archer84,

I think even Hunk would give similar mileage like FZ around 40, also heavier too. But I considered Hero Achiever (mainly for its price and older unicorn's engine), I'm concerned over its' spares availability as we can't see much of it in our roads. Also since the xtreme is discontinued now, I fear achiever would be the next to follow since it doesn't sell much. If not for these concerns I would gladly go for the achiver, since it costs almost 20k less than the FZ.

By the way, I travel via the tambaram, medavakkam, omr to siruseri. Particularly medavakkam-sozhinganallur road is clogged with traffic not to mention the bad road condition.

Gixxer is the best pick, but since you don't have service center, its better you stick to the Honda. Just head over to your nearest Honda showroom and test ride it and also check reviews about the nearest Honda service and take the call.
Yes. The FZ is the expensive of the lot ~1L. But unicorn is not cheap either, final onroad price comes around 90k. Also online reviews indicate multiple issues with the new unicorn160 like engine heating, bad gearbox, poor build quality etc. Comparing both, Gixxer looks like a VFM right now. But the nearest suzuki showroom is jains suzuki, pallavaram which is more than 10 kms from my home. If nothing pans out finally, then I would to go for the expensive options fz/gixxer. First I have to clear my doubts over achiever, sz, uni.

10kms is not too far I guess (maybe being in a metro I'm feeling that way ), if you have the choice just go for Gixxer eyes closed, you'll be more satisfied than anything else.

Give a try to SZ-RR. A very good underrated commuter with the ability to do occasional long distance with ease. Should give you 45-48 kmpl. The pillion sear is the best among the lot.

Re: Help a beginner choose his first bike

I am as tall as you and i got my first bike (yamaha fzr version 2.0) I have got my hands on all bikes out there. so let me help you brother!

You can easily avoid 150 cc + pulsar bikes as they are heavy and not the power you need right now!

              Pulsar 150 cc i
pros for you - Is a classic with good rider and pillion comfort and fe is decent too. I think it is one of the cheapest option in 150 cc segment
cons for you - durability is a question if you are planning to keep the bike for 3+ yrs. Still it depends how you ride and maintain it!

Yamaha fz versio 2.0 - with price comes quality and looks
pros for you - handles like a dream, good fuel efficiency, yamaha gives good quality and bikes ride smooth even aftr 30k kms, MRF tires give you confidence.
cons for you- pillion seat is not exactly comfortable, I would strongly suggest you take that person along for all your test rides.
Doubts - No you don't spend extra 2000 for cleaning fi every 3 months. normal service charge is

              Suzuki gixxer- Fresh and beautiful
pros for you - again light weight like fz so very comfortable for beginners, not costly as fz, my frn gets 45 avg, suzuki quality is very nice. Looks so good in black
cons for you - might not be comfortable for long rides and pillion seat is not comfortable. Service centers are lesser compared to honda and yamaha.

              Doubts - durability

              Honda unicorn 160 -

Pros - Unicorn is a commuter all the way and Honda will not disappoint you in quality. Very good rider and pillion comfort, specially for the girls.
cons - Very average looking bike.
Doubts - I don't know why people on mouthshut hate unicorn so much, you better check user reviews. Only some service centers are horrible.

              OTHER OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Apache 160 - Some people just love the way bike moves on road, and I am not surprised. Its quickest of the lot. Vibrations maybe a problem, but I've read, that the new models are good. Riding position is not very relaxed. I find rear disc breaks a little risky for beginners.

Hero cbz xtreme - If any hero bikes you want to consider this is the one. Very comfortable as the seat height is good, I think it will do good in long rides too. Over all Good value for money but not as good looking as it's competitors.

Looks are subjective and you should decide your priorities when buying a 150 cc bike. As long as you shift the gears properly and service the bike on time 150cc bikes give good FE. Please do test ride all the bikes, nothing will beat your personal experience. IF you have a budget in mind choice becomes tricky! GOOD LUCK

                Friends,

                How are you doing?

Due to the recent floods and other expenses, my budget was revised, also my mileage consciousness was alerted, hence I decided to go with 125ccs, test drove saluto yesterday. It felt ok to me, booked the maroon one for 1000 Rs yesterday.

Now I have a last minute doubt regarding the government's BSiv and mandatory cbs/abs norms. Should I go ahead with my purchase, or wait till all the manufacturers update their models with BSiv engines and abs/cbs and then buy them. Kindly advise which is way is more prudent ?

                Thanks
                Naveen.

Thanks. Actually sz-rrv2 was first in my list. But the 3 floored showroom didn't even have a single display bike in it, not to mention the test drive vehicle. 7 out of 10 display vehicles were fz/fazer and the remaining fascino/saluto. When asked, the salesman replied that due to lesser demand, they don't order much, hardly 3 or 4 bikes would arrive, now they dont have a single bike with them. So, I have to go with the next option saluto. The FE difference between these two comes around 15kmpl, is what bugs me a lot, else I would have pestered him on sz-rrv2.

Apart from this fz and szrr shsres same engine as far as i know so spare parts not being issue in future... Also there is less stress on engine being 150cc apart from 125cc..rest you decide yourself... Also szrr looks more sexier than saluto..

                          Hello Jammbuster,

Test rode SZ, it was smooth and felt really good. Costs around 80k. Another bike, which I liked in the hero showroom nearby is, Achiever, test rode it too, it was equally smooth as the sz, but costs only 72k final price. Also I liked it's matte grey colour in flesh more than the loud sz colours. But unfortunately, there aren't many online reviews for it except for few recommendations in the what bike section, Any idea about the Achiever ?
