• Honda CBR 250R vs Suzuki Inazuma GW250

Hello Guys,

I have been planning to upgrade my 7+ years old Pulsar 150. Here are the requirements -
1. Comfortable city commuter - 15+ kms everyday.
2. Comfortable tourer - Odd touring outside city.
3. A sane two wheeler. So no warp speed Duke 390 for me. I am at a stage where I want a relaxed ride.
4. No RE (I can't handle the temperamental nature of the bikes). Plus vibration free rides.

Scouring the internet, I have narrowed down to either a Honda CBR250R or a Suzuki Inazuma GW250. I haven't test driven the Honda yet (plan to do it in a couple of days). I did test drive the Inazuma and was very impressed with the ride quality, smooth engine and the comfort level on the bike.

What works against the Inazuma is -
1. Price (OTR will work to ~2.5L vs 2.1L for CBR).
2. No ABS.
3. Probably expensive spares & after sales (since it is a CKD)? - Existing owners of Inazuma - Please confirm. I talked to a dealer in B'lore who quoted Rs5,000 for Center stand. And a fellow xbhpian has bought a leg/engine guard for Rs.25,000/-
4. Also, I am from Hyderabad where there is no dealer for Inazuma. I did talk to a couple who can get the bike from Bangalore dealers. The big worry is after sales service. Would the ASCs in Hyderabad able to and are qualified to service it? The dealer in Hyderabad in assures me that it will be taken care of. But I am still a little ambivalent.

What works against CBR250R -
1. Build quality seems to be a bit poor on this Honda. It has probably improved in the recent versions of the bike, but I doubt it will match the build quality of Suzuki.
2. Poor Honda ASCs. (Not sure how Suzuki rate w.r.t Honda).
3. Single cylinder (Suzuki is a parallel cylinder which probably accounts for the refined engine)

So I would like the experts and people with experience with CBR250R & Inazuma to weigh in. Also, if anybody has bought the vehicle from some other city (with no local dealers) talk about their experience with after sales service.

Any help/thoughts would be much appreciated.

Approved!

Inazuma is leagues ahead of any <3 L bike on sale, but after sales is more important IMO. Are you sure Hyd has no dealers?

Also, an updated CBR may be announced for India soon.
If service/dealer is not a problem, Suzuki is the right option, but yes its spares are very costly. Engine guard is indeed 26k including taxes and center stand roughly 6k.

Divya.S - Unfortunately, there are no dealers in Hyderabad. Most calls to Suzuki showroom gets me redirected to people trying to sell me Suzuki Access. None of the guys knew about the bike. Only after I persevere a bit, a couple of dealers offering me to get the bike from a Bangalore showroom. But the amount of pestering I had to do to get them to this commitment was tedious and I shudder to think what would I have to do to if a problem arises post sales.

I did read about the new CBR. Any ideas about the announcement date and launch date? I could wait a couple of more months. By the way, do we know if Honda is also launching CB300 in India. I have read conflicting reports that we will get only the update CBR250R and not the CB300. And some claim that we might get both.
Also, would the new CBR250R match the pricing of the existing one?

the Inazuma if you are willing to shell out the extra money. The bike is superior in terms of quality and refinement.. the xBhp Collectors ride had 2 inazuma along with the Busa and when I inquired about the performance of inazuma on highways.. they said it is a perfect tourer but also i was told it is not a worthy upgrade from a Karizma or a Karizma ZMR to Inazuma.. But the twin cylinder is the added advantage for the refined engine..

Are you sure there is not a single showroom that is selling the bike?? that is quite odd..

Unfortunately so :-(.

Anyway, I think I will wait for the upgraded CRB250R and see if Suzuki makes any moves meanwhile. What I really like from the Honda stable is the Honda CB300 (naked version of CBR300). I hope it makes it to Indian roads. Not much into fully-clothed bikes.

I am a supporter of Inazuma, and yet will recommend you to hold till new Honda CBR250/300 whatever Honda has planned for India. Once it is out, you can make an informed decision.

Also, I didn't understand the comment that Inazuma was not an upgrade from ZMA/ZMR. I hope someone who rode the bikes in the ride gets on this thread and puts forth his opinion.

In terms of performance and top end abilities. It's as comfy as a karizma and karizma riders would find it home.

it was said as the amount you spend on the Inazuma after owning a Karizma or a Karizma ZMR is just not worth it as they are as reliable and a worthy tourer with a proven engine which does almost similar top end and performance wise close to each other.. this was told to me by a person who toured across India with the Inazuma.. in-fact they are part of the xBhp core team who does review on bikes..

I am a supporter of the Inazuma as well.. if you go through the Inazuma thread, you will know

Re: Honda CBR 250R vs Suzuki Inazuma GW250

My query was not in jest, it was genuine. I have read people upgrade from ZMA/ZMR to CBR250, so thought even Inazuma would be an upgrade from ZMR. In practical use, what can be termed as an upgrade for ZMA/ZMR? CBR/Ninja/Inazuma? Duke can't be due to inherent wild nature, and rest of the bikes are above 250/300cc.

Sorry OP, I know this is not directly related to your question, but hope you too get some insight from the answers.

This was exactly I am also looking at:

Iam not really a fan of faired bikes. But unfortunately, bike manufactures in India are giving us fun-to-ride bikes in faired version (barring KTM). I own a GS150R and wanted to upgrade to street fighter kind of bike (commuter type).

If folks actually think that Karizma is that good in terms of performance and comfort, that is high praise for Karizma indeed. The only quibble I have with Karizma is that while it has tried to stay in touch with general tech. updates (FE, Disc brakes, tubeless tyres, etc) over the years, I still yearn for a engine update/option to a larger CC engine. That is the only thing that I do not understand as to why Hero's folks haven't been a little bold. I am sure a significant part of the legion of Karizma fans think the same. Let's hope Hastur changes all that, although I definitely think that Hero wouldn't be launching a 600cc bike as shown in Auto Expo.

BTW - Does the build/parts quality of the Honda CBRs different (read lesser) to say their counterparts in other countries (like Europe or US)? I have read good stuff from international websites about Honda CBR250R, but the ownership reviews in India will make a guy think a tad harder before he buys the CBR (although he will eventually buy it if he has his mind set on it).

The HX250R is coming soon.. the hastur is also coming, hopefully by the end of 2015..

Yes.. on the highways, 126kmph seems too slow.. to counter that, the roads in India arent good enough for bikes doing above 120 kmph.. Dogs, stray cattles, idiotic people and morons behind wheels.. Divya Sharan met with an accident which could have been fatal on his way to hyderabad when 2 dogs out of nowhere came in the middle of the road. Before he could react, he crashed.. Thank God nothing too serious happened to him..

I would have been hit by cows which came out of nowhere when i was doing 120kmph.. luckily had i been a little slower, i would have crashed.. no time to react at 120kmph as well.. while going through village, on seeing me on my ZMR, guys on their splendor started racimg against me.. i gradually slowed down.. imagine auch people with bikes that can do 150s.. with maniacs behind the handles.. serious threat..

People.. who walk on the middle of the road or on the wrong side of the road.. i have faced them too.. even crashed upon a rickshaw coming on the wrong side on a curve.. luckily i was able to slow down the speed to 40 kmph from 70kmph.. norhing serious to me. But my bike suffered..

Idiots behind the wheels.. car drivers, truck drivers, bus drivers and whatever the other drivers we have in India.. they want to shoe the bikers who the Kings of the road are.. the road will be im its worst condition. In-fact no roads.. thats when the truck drivers and bus drivers show their useless talents.. driving away all the dust and sand on the innocent people on bike behind them.. been there and faced it.. agaim because of all that dust, i couldnt go beyond 20kmph and would have crashed as nothing was visible ahead of me..

Well.. all i am trying to say is. Even ridimg at 120 kmph on our Indian roads are dangerous. Be it any bike.. thats the safe speed limit you can ride on and I guess karizmas are good when it comes to riding on the Indian roads..

Can you tell me how long you can wait before buying a new bike?

The reason behind CBRs doing bad in India could be the road conditions of India just an opinion. Yes, they are doing good in the International market and they are doing good in India as well.. but you know Indians. We want more from something and also pay less for the same.

rreneav1987 - Point taken about Indian roads. Personally, I have stuck to speed limits to 80kmph on our road trips. Safer and less taxing on your concentration. And being Indian, cannot ignore the fact that it does wonders to your mileage .
I am not in a tearing hurry to buy a new one. My current bike (Pulsar 150cc) is faring me well. I think I can wait for the new CBR250R (which might be around the end of the year). HX250R sounds promising. Never knew about that. I will consider when it comes out.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Inazuma, as far I know is a bike on the heavy side, and so not a traffic cutter at all. It does not look sporty. Else it meets every other purposes of yours. Again Suzuki ASS will give you trouble everywhere. If the new Honda CBR300R comes under your budget you may opt for it, since quality is more improved in it than 250R. On highway rides both CBR and INazuma will provide you pleasure.

arnab.hawk - I test drove the Inazuma in Bangalore for 7-8 kms. I was stuck in 3-4 signals with quite a bit of traffic and also had to take couple of U turns. I must say it was a breeze to handle to bike in traffic. It would hardly give you the idea it is tardy in day-to-day traffic. All this was done with a pillion no less. And it has a good low end torque which helps to no end in city driving. Weight wouldn't be a concern for Inazuma.
What would be a concern though is the longer wheelbase of the bike. It might help in stability, but it might prove to turn in smaller spaces or parking a bit of a pain. But considering the build quality and refinement, it should be well worth living with these minor niggles. As of today, dealership and the slightly high-end pricing (even after reducing the price by ~1L) is what will be driving people away. (Not to mention lack of any advertising..)
