  • Planning to buy a New Scooter

I am planning to buy one more Scooter (already having a TVS Wego) and my likings are TVS Jupiter or Hero Maestro Edge.

Early last month, I have visited the Hero Showroom in my place. They advised that Maestro Edge still to come here (Understand Maestro Edge is still to be launched in Southern States ). They had the Hero Duet available ready in stock.

The Duet looks nice (almost the shape of Activa) with lot of new features like Integrated Breaking system, side stand indicator, Pass light, USB 3.0 Charging port, Boot Light, Digital Analog combo console, External fuel filler, Low fuel indicator, Service due indicator, Immobilizer (Anti-Theft System), Full metal Body etc. The price they quoted was Rs.63,000 on the road with 5 year warranty.

    Engine power: 110.9 cc, 8.31 bhp @8000Rpm, 8.30 NM@6500 RPM
    Dimension: 1830x726x1139mm
    Ground Clearance : 155

Tubeless Tyres 90/100-10-53J (both front and rear)

I like the scooter but not happy with 10'' tyre size because both Wego and Jupiter comes with 12'' tyres which I prefer. However Jupiter do not have above features, especially the Integrated breaking system and Side stand indicator. The price (OTR) Rs.64,000 with 3 year warranty.
(Even new Wego comes with combo breaking system).

I have written to Hero motors to let me know when they intend to launch the Maestro Edge and they replied that it will be sometime in January 2016.

Is that 12'' or 10'' tyre size going to make much of a difference in actual performance?? (Hero guy says not going to make huge difference whereas TVS guy says 12" tyre size will give more grip, comfort etc....

Can anyone please give suggestions on this?

    Query Approved

Bigger wheels help where roads are not that great. If you are used to using both front and rear brakes, then the integrated braking system is almost redundant. If you already have a good after sales experience with TVS, then stick to it. If not, then the Maestro Edge does look like an interesting proposition.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks. Yes, after sales service with TVS is good so far and seems very realistic charges too. However, I feel Jupiter ( I have shortlisted TVS Jupiter, Mahindra Gusto, Hero Maestro Edge/Hero Duet) seems bit old model (I dont think they have upgraded much since the launch ) like Wego (ofcourse Wego they have modified the console and now comes with CBS).

Mahindra Gusto - Eventhough this one has got many new features, I am not much interested because there are no service station near my place(only showroom) and the nearest one is about 40 kms away( one way distance) which is not economical.

Now, I am left with either Maestro Edge or Duet. My preference is Maestro Edge because it has External fuel filler with Flap cover, 12'' inch front wheel, alloy wheels which missing on Duet. Otherwise both Edge and Duet are equipped with almost same features/engine etc except Duet has full metal body.

External fuel filling feature with flap cover open positioin

External fuel filling - flap cover closed position

One of my relative has got Maestro since last 2 years and he has no complaint either on the scooter or with the service, so I think no worry about service related matters.

But the problem is Maestro Edge is not yet launched in Kerala and only Duet is available now. !?

Re: Planning to buy a New Scooter

This morning I got a call from Hero Motors dealers office advising that Maestro Edge launch in Kerala may be further delayed to February (they earlier advised that it will be available in January 2016) and they want to know if I still have any interest on Hero Duet for which I already got a quote from them last month (Rs.62,670 On road price).

In their quotation, they have included an amount of Rs.2050 towards ''Regn Handling charges''. (Last month,Kerala MVD issued a circular /instruction to all RTO's to take action against dealers those who are charging exorbitant amount as ''handling charges''. Few days back the authorities suspended some of the dealers licences/trading certificates after checking and finding irregularities in collecting huge amount of money as such handling charges.).

So, I spoke to them today about this Handling charge matter but they said this can bel discussed when finalising the deal.

Any member from Kerala happened to book a vehicle in the recent past i.e after 15th of December 2015 and did the dealers/showroom charged ''Handling charges''??

By the way, I am little bit confused whether to wait for Meastro Edge or take Duet as I already promised to gift the Wego(which am using now) to my nephew who keep on visiting me.. Any suggestions??

When I got quotations year ago, dealers charged under unusual heads like incidental fitment charge, misc charges, handling charges...
I am not from Kerala, this is just for you reference. Handling charges ranged from 900 to 1160 across different bike dealers. Bajaj and Suzuki quotation didn't have any handling charges, but I assume it's clubbed under different head.

Yes, everybody charges some extra amount but in different head. When I bought the Wego, TVS dealer included some extra amount under the heading 'Tax/Registratioin'' and charged Rs.4801 whereas the tax receipt shows as Rs.3202.

But now, I think the situation will change here (if not already changed) as Vehicle owners can register a complaint to the RTO if they find the amount charging/charged by the dealer's are more than what actually need to pay, and strict action will be taken by the RTO on that particular dealer..!

I will know what are the exact amount need to pay now, when I go for the new scooter.!

No, I didnt consider Yamaha or Suzuki Scooters because none have external fuel filling facility. Earlier, I was riding Kinetic Sym Flyte which has front fuel filling feature and now TVS wego which has external (rear) fuel filling system. I dont have the patience to place the scooter on stand and then open the seat and then petrol tank lid etc etc, everytime fuelling has to be done, especially after having enjoyed external fuelling convenience all these years....!

A good scooter may not have all the fancy bells and whistles. I strongly recomend giving yamaha scoots a try before making a decision.

                      Thanks indeed your guidance.
I feel external fuel filling feature is not a fancy one now-a-days instead it is much convenient for riders (ofcourse its my opinion only). Once we used to it then it seems difficult to change the habit...

So, mostly, I will be finalising either TVS Jupiter or Maestro Edge or Hero Duet.!! (The confusion is among this three....)

I have just received email from Hero Motors Kerala Sales head advising that Maestro Edge Demo vehicle is now arrived /available at Hero showroom Kannur and invited me for a Test ride.

It looks like they will launch the scooter in Kerala (or may be all south Indian states) very soon.!

Yes Edge and Duet have more features. What you need to decide is whether you really want those extra features or whether you can live without it.

For example side stand indicator. Why would I need it? Not checking for position of side stand before moving is a rookie mistake. In US you would be immediately FAILED on the MSF course.

Integrated braking system (IBS), if you are in the habit of using both the brakes, then you dont need this.

The jupiter weighs the least. In a scooter I consider least weight to be more important. This infact holds true for any bike.

Thanks, Yes I agree Jupiter weighs the least.

I have been using TVS Wego for more than one year now and I dont want another TVS scooter in my house

Side stand - this is one thing I often forget especially during shopping when stop and go repeatedly. I never forget this side stand matter when I move the scooter first time but in a hurry I have been making this mistake.

Also, when we are getting all advanced features and comfort nowadays why settle for the old style - I think that way.

After all this is a Hero product.!!
