  • KTM DUKE 390: Phased out by 2016?

    Hi Xbhpians,

I am obcessed with the Duke 390...truely!!! I have decided to buy this bike this year for which I have started saving up. Now, as I was browsing, I found out that news that KTM's current line up is going to be phased out by 2016 . By when this is going to happen - especially for the Duke 390? I am planning to buy the bike around october. What are my options? Please help!

    Thanks,
    Samrat
The day I'll not ride, will be a sad day for me.

    Query Approved

Even if the model is discontinued, you will still get parts for your bike. If you like it, then buy it!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: KTM DUKE 390: Phased out by 2016?

You have to understand a couple of things to make a logical decision.

The current Gen1 models of KTM will be phased out by 2017. That means the 2016 models of the KTM bikes are the most refined Gen1 bikes you can get since these will be the 4th iteration of the Gen1 models

In 2017 when Gen2 bikes come out, they might have a new set of issues with them as they will belong to the 1st set.

So make your choice wisely. Theres always an IF or BUT.

According to a very recent news, the 2016 models of KTM bikes arent out yet but they will be and they are rumored to get some very minor changes including an all-the-time-ON DRLs. So wait until the autoExpo is over to get some more information

But ride by wire will definitely increase price and rupee exchange rate also will have impact bike price. So if you are looking for bike
          about 2 lac, go ahead

Might, might not. Duke doesn't comes as CBK but is manufactured for other markets also in India. So don't worry too much about rupee rate. It adds more electronic components so price might or might not increase. Depends on how KTM wants to place it(Slipper clutch and better radiator components added last year without price impact). Experts say that ride by wire does not improve the throttle experience much but is more aimed at meeting stringent emission norms by giving more control on fuel input by on board computers.

Also on second thought, contrary to what I said in previous post, it might be a great idea to wait for 2017 model as 2017 model essentially would be next iteration of 2016 model without any radical change as engine and gerabox is left untouched. Only change would be silencer and probably ride by wire I guess. It could be an improvement on current version and is unlikely to be faced by glitches usually faced by a hugely revamped model.

Re: KTM DUKE 390: Phased out by 2016?

KTM Duke 390 current editions will be stopped manufacturing from Mid of this year -2016.
New 2016 edition should be avialble by Q3 or Max Q4 of this year.
DRL , Bigger Disks will be included in new edition . Ride by wire may or may not be there in the Indian versions.
There will be price revison as well.
I think it would be good to wait till mid of this year to get more updates on the new version then decide to buy current edition or wait for 2016 edition.

What is your source if I may ask? And will there be an all new 390 in 2017?

Regarding new rc390 in 2017 its too early to say , let the 2016 edition roll first.

I meant, what do you mean by this statement if the 2016 model year is already in the showrooms? You keep saying something will be launched in the middle of this year. What is it and what updates will that have opposed to what is already in the showrooms? The only thing missing are adjustable levers by the looks of it.

                        He is misinformed.

2016 versions are already out in showrooms.

2016 will mark the end of FIRST GENERATION of KTM bikes

2017 will mark the Beginning of SECOND GENERATION of KTM bikes

Whats equipped on the current bikes is all you will get for the year of 2016, there will be NO further updates.

So if you are in the market for getting yourself a KTM bike I would recommend getting one this year instead of next year. Why? Because 2016 KTM bikes are the 4th iteration of FIRST GEN bikes since their launch in 2012 and they are the most refined ones of the entire lot. 2017 bikes are being built completely from scratch with new engine and stuff so they will be having a new set of issues, not to mention increased prices.

Not really RI, I have been informed by a few other folks too that there is another update possibly coming in april... The only problem is nobody knows what that is!

Further the 2017 bikes will have the same engine and chassis, just a new exhaust system and a few other mods to keep emissions at bay is what it looks like. This has been confirmed because the bikes have already been spotted testing.

Again misinformed. The bikes that have been spotted are not 2017 models. They are 2016 export models and those spy shots are VERY OLD. When KTM themselves have said that they are phasing out current generation bikes by the end of 2016 because 2017 bikes will be made on a NEW PLATFORM from Scratch, why are we speculating so much? Also I am not sure what possible updates are going to come out in April when already a TON of updates have been made to 2016 models. ( I already inquired last week at a major KTM dealer and they said they have not received any news on any kind of further update for the already launched 2016 models because it doesnt make sense to perform an update for a bike model thats already in the showrooms. And on that note we had a good laugh because we both knew I asked a stupid illogical question )

The 2nd link mentions about the DUKE family getting the engine update and not the RCs because RCs use the same engine as the Dukes do.

You know, for a bike that is to be launched in 2017, test models would have been spotted ages back. Cycle world caught them testing somewhere in Europe and put out an article about it.

That said, all we can do is to wait and watch. There's different stuff being purported at different places. Not holding my breath anymore.
