  • Hey Guys! New biker here needs advice.

Hey guys! I'm a newbie to the world of riding, tho not motorcycles itself, having been a companion to my dad on long rides on his Bullet 350. I turned 18 about 8 months back, and since then have been riding a lot, riding quickly becoming one of my greatest hobbies/pastimes.

I so far have only one bike, a 135cc Discover model, which is my main steed and is now being reclaimed by the friend I borrowed it from. I've ridden about 2500kms on this bike alone. I also have experience with my Dads bullet and my friends Benelli TNT 300 model(1200+km on the Bull, about 300 on the TNT). Now that the discover is being taken back, time has come to purchase my own Bike, and hence I come here.

I'm using the posting guidelines from the sticky

    1. Budget

Upto 2.5 lakhs finally, max(including all RTO stuff). I already will be getting gear separately, but I already have bought my helmet and have a jacket and gloves.

    2. Age

I am currently 18 years old.

    3. Height

    5'6''

    4. Weight

    74 KG

    5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.)

I have a 30KM commute every alternate day, and will have about ten KM of random rides every day. I also will have/intend to have longer, 100km+ runs every other week or so.

    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any)

Not a huge issue, but would prefer to have 25-30 kmpl mileage.

    7. City & Highway percentage usage

    80:20?

8.City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing)

    Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

    9. Brand / Bike type preference (if any)

I don't have a Brand/Bike preference as such, but I would like it to be a nice, reliable machine for at least the next 5 years or so. ABS would be a nice plus.

So far, I have considered the following bikes(I would appreciate other suggestions)

    1. KTM Duke 390
    2. Honda CBR 250 C-ABS model
    3. KTM RC390(not so heavily consdered seeing as I really don't like the faired look of the RC)
    4. Pulsar RS200(test drove, did not like)

I went and test drove the RC today, and tried to test drive the Duke but the AMD KTM showroom doesn't have an operational Duke 390 demo. I have not driven the CBR yet. I would like suggestions on what else to try. KTM guy is promising delivery Same day, for the 2016 model.

    Thanks a Ton!

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      First and foremost,

      Welcome to the club SH.

Since your usage will be mostly city commute, You can give a shot at 200NS as well. IMO, D390 is way too powerful for someone who is jumping to his first bike (unless, you know your responsibilities and your limits of riding it).

Its a VFM package, awesome bike, good touring machine as well. Should come within your budget with all registrations and other processes included.

If not, the 3rd one which I would suggest you is, D200, less powerful than its brother, but does the job very well. Give you a very good mileage and spares and service is cheap.

I would recommend the CBR 250R with ABS.A Great bike.Would be a wee bit difficult to ride in City Traffic because of the heavy front caused by the Fairing and rigid Steering.

If you can wait until April,I would highly recommend you look at the RTR 200 4V.With your Budget,You can get the top end version,That is with ABS,Pirelli Tyres and Fuel Injection for HALF your budget ,1.3Lakhs.It's a wee bit underpowered though,Makes 21 Bhp,I think Fuel Efficiency will be like 30-37 Kmpl.It will be much easier to ride in traffic because of the relatively lighter front end.RTRs are known for their Handling around corners,So you can have some awesome fun.Not sure about the turing though,Certainly not as comfortable as say,A ZMR/220F/AS 200/Avenger 220.If you are looking for the 200cc Pulsars,You can have a look at the RTR 200.I wouldn't recommend the D390/RC390 as it's WAY too powerful and you need to be really careful with it,It's like the son of RD 350 :P If you have ridden something AS FAST as a D390 and if you are absolutely sure on what a mad beast you got,Go for the KTM.And KTM,Bajaj,Have a little bit of a bad build quality (Compared to Honda/TVS/Yamaha) and reliability is a question over 3 years and Resale value of the KTMs are worser than say,Daewoos :P

If you are interested in Two Strokes....Well,Do a Restoration of whatever old 2 Stroke bike you like,Let it be the RX/Shogun/Yezdi/Jawa and enjoy the different ride

If you are looking for Reliability and ABS, CBR250r abs is the option. May be you have ridden tnt300, but D390 is a different game. From discover135, honda cbr250r will be a decent upgrade. This is also a great touring machine. So in the coming years if you are thinking of doing longer rides that wouldn't be a problem. Also the pillion comfort is the best among your choices. So in a filmy scene like rainy and romantic evening if you found any beautiful lady waiting in the bus stand you can surely offer her to drop her home.. Finally you will get a good resale value after some years. Thus you wouldn't have to burn your pocket too much for your next upgrade.

              Hey, TheArcher

              First of, thanks a lot.

Second, my commuting is barely in the city. Most of this 30KM commute is on an open road, with 2 stoplights in the middle and almost no traffic. I think I can handle the D390, no worries. I test drove it today, and I got to say, my heart really likes the Duke.

Hey Guys, an update. I test drove the Duke 390 today, and I really liked it. Is there an actual reason that you can give me to NOT go for the Duke, apart from the power? I think I can handle, and grow into the 44 BHP the Duke offers.

              Thanks

There is absolutely nothing negative to say about D390 if you can handle and the power house with maturity. just make sure you get the 2016 model with auto headlights,
that is the one with all the latest update, if the d390 you are buying has headlight switch it is 2015 model.

                Happy safe riding

You will have to go easy on the Duke 390. Thats all there is to it. Practice and gradually get to know the power delivery and you will be just fine. Its a good one time investment for a longer run.

The KTM is made in India for India. It's not made here and exported. It uses Bajaj's Plants and Bajaj's Parts so Build Quality is a wee bit behind TVS.I am not at all saying the D390 is a bad bike,it's a monster alright. You need to be very careful with it.

This is wrong data. There are 2 production lines at Chakan plant in Maharashtra - one for India and another for export markets.
