  • Best bike for people having Backpain.

    Hi everyone,
I am Nirmal, 22 from Kannur, Kerala. Iam currently using 2014 model Bajaj Pulsar 200NS.

As I am suffering from a lower back pain problem, I am planning to buy another bike.
Can you please suggest me a bike of engine capacity ranging between 150cc and 500cc which can be used in bad road conditions /bumpy roads that offers best comfort?

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: Best bike for people having Backpain.

I had a lower spine surgery done 2 years ago and it still aches. I had some post surgery complications because of which my lower spine (tailbone) ended up having multiple fractures. (this condition has no cure). At office and at home, I use a doughnut cushion or coccyx cushion to release pain.

I own a Benelli TNT 300 and the cushioning on the seat is excellent. I hardly feel any bumps hitting my lower back and thus no inflammation till date (touch wood).

If you are planning to get a bike, any bike of that matter, make sure you get a custom cushion done especially for your coccyx. I have driven most of the 150CC bikes and the seats are pretty hard for the condition I am suffering from. Hene the best way to treat your back would be the below:

      1. Make sure you get a custom cushioning done.
      2. Make sure you change your seating posture. The less pressure applied onto your back, the less it will get inflamed.
      3. Make sure you get long breaks while touring.

I am not sure what condition you are suffering from, the above pointers are related to my condition and they work great.

Your best bet for a comfy ride is the Inazuma from the Suzuki stable. Unfortunately it has been phased out now, but if you could find a used one, nothing is more comfier.

But then again, I'm sure you've got your own set of preferred bikes. Could you name a few so we can discuss over them?

Not sure if present 150 Bikes would be back friendly, as every one is making their bikes as sportier as possible.
There is news of Unicorn 150and Unicorn 160 getting launched. The older ones were very smooth, reliable and comfortable, which should suit your needs.

For further comfort add cushions to the seats to get extra padding and comfort.

Re: Best bike for people having Backpain.

There is no bike that can claim to be comfortable for people of every make and size. People find avanger very comfortable but it was a pain for me. So I would suggest you shortlist a few which have upright seating posture, and spend some time riding it. This will give a clear picture on what is comfortable. Also after zeroing in make sure you get some customized cushioning if necessary.

Do not go in for very soft seat cushioning as it will eventually compress around the butt region and the non-compressed part will press against your tailbone. A bit hard seat is better as after use it will take the shape of your butt and not compress too much.
The way you ride is the way you are..

                Two words bro

                "GEL" "SEAT"

Get the gel seat cushion or get the gel and swap it out for the foam cushion in your bike seat. personally I suggest the former rather than latter for that water bed or bean bag chair like feel on your bike seat.

Re: Best bike for people having Backpain.

The range you have specified is way too big(150cc-500cc). Unfortunately, in India there are not many bikes in that range that can cater to comfortable and relaxed rides. Avenger is one of them if you can live with a little vibration. The newer version has had a remarkable improvement in this area. The UM has not yet been in the market; otherwise you could have another option in Commando/Renegade.
If you look at lower down the order, you have the Unicorn twins and the SZ-RR. A little up and there are the Karizma twins. In the end all comes down to what your ergonomics require. Remember, even if you are given the best sofa set in the world and made to sit on that in one particular posture for an hour, your back is bound to get hurt.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

The problem is not with the cushioning of the seat of the bike. The problem is the SUSPENSION.
I think a bike with good suspension setup is what I need.
I have heard that Royal Enfield bikes have good suspension. Other bikes which I have shortlisted are Yamaha FZ, Honda Unicorn Suzuki Gixxer, Bajaj Avenger Street 220, Honda CBR 250R.

RE has suspension on the stiffer side. Also, despite being a good bike, an Enfield will give you vibes - which will transform into your spine.
BTW, SZ-RR has one of the best suspensions you can think of.

You should take out Avenger Street 220 and put in Avenger Cruse 220 since it has a longer handle bar and a better seating posture which will not hurt your back. Stay away from bikes that make you lean a little forward.

I had a ZMR earlier. But, even it used to hurt my back after sometime (say around 30 min). Now, purchased a Duke 390. Never have had to face backpain again till now.! Duke has a very comfortable position.

It's not just about the suspension. It's a combination of the suspension, seating posture and the seat material. So make a wise decision.

And no matter what, you will need to take breaks in between. Even if it's just standing at a signal for 50-60 seconds.
