• R3 or Ninja 300

Hello Bikers,

I have a tough call to make here. I am a true Honda bike fan, Honda Unicorn (2005) till date, CBR 250R (2015) till date in our family. Unicorn is mine and CBR is my younger brothers mate. We already have CBR in our family and no budget for CBR 650.

As my requirement is twin cylinder bike with budget of 4L, I am planning to go for all new Ninja 300 (2016) (Legend) or Yamaha R3 (New Kid in the block).

What I am Planning to do with the bike:
1) Daily Commute to Office (20KMs One-way)
2) Week-end short trips (100-150 KMs) Bi-Weekly
3) Occasional Long drives From Bangalore to Chennai/Trichy/Trichur/Mysore (Once in quarter)

Kindly provide your thoughts and feedbacks.
Regards,
ArK

Hi

i'm not in the same boat but yeah i do want my next bike to have minimum of two cylinders.
Anyways coming to the matter - For all practical purposes i love the R3.
It has got better low/mid end.
Looks good.
Better braking.
Manageable in terms of height/weight. (i am 5.6)
Cheaper ownership/maintenance.

But if i win a lottery then i would still put my money on the New Ninja 300 2016.
I simply can't get enough of the awesome - awesome white green color graphics.
But that's me.

cheers.

Both bikes can easily do what you are asking for. And are similar in a lot of ways.
Buy the bike you love or the negatives you can put up with. I've mentioned the difference below IMHO.

R3

+ves: Torque, relatively low cost of maintenance, brakes, exhaust
-ves: Refinement, tyres, production niggles, people mistake it for R15 in passing

Ninja

+ves: Refinement, larger tank, slipper clutch, kawasaki brand
-ves: Cost, brakes

P.S. I own a R3.

Both the bikes are equally good. The R3 would be economical in terms of purchase and maintenance. The extra money you saved could be used to buy better gears or maybe even better tires. I would suggest R3 at this point. The Ninja might cost more than 4lakhs to bring it home.

Lets talk about the Legend N300:- Design clues taken from the 636R, 10R and 14R. Slipper clutch, class servicing at KTM svc, but it is costly on every thing the price 4.1 lac approx, cost of ownership and maintenance is also high

The R3:- Design inverted headlamps OMP factor, better brakes, bigger forks. same ergos and cornering ability (Not with stock tires) price is 3.7 lac approx, cost of ownership less than Duke 200 remaining cash for FFE and better tires

Also watch the Powerdrift video of R3, Ninja 300 and RC390 You might wanna go for the RC390

I think for your requirements which you mentioned R3 makes more sense because its more relaxed ride compared to N300 and if you are planning more for long drives then comfort should be one of the priorities not that N300 is uncomfortable but in comparison R3 is more comfortable.
But if you plan to hit race track then N300.

Re: R3 or Ninja 300

+1 for R3.
Ninja is premium and with that comes the big money in terms of maintenance and servicing.
Check out the ownership experiences of both and you will find how much difference there is just for regular servicing.
And talking about spare parts, R3 parts are comparatively less expensive than the Ninja, not to mention the waiting time you will have to bear for Ninja parts to arrive.
Then comes the availability of service centers, there are more Yamaha service centers, then there are for Ninja (Only a few Bajaj ASC can handle the Ninja).
So all in all R3 would be a better choice.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

@dnewguy: Thank you, yeah i somehow feel i have won a lottery here. To add to my requirements
- Pleasure to drive and gives you confidence
- Head Turner
@yellowspunk: Thank you for your valuable thoughts, I prefer bike not to have niggles when i spend north of 3-4 Lakhs.
@Kaushik Iyer: Fairing is not the requirement but i like well refined Japanese petrol engines on bikes.
ajextreme: Lets take the money out of the equation here as i have 4L to spend.I want the pleasure of riding, which gives that insane feeling when i hear high reving twins and the envy look people give you.
@Suraj200: RC390 is not the bike to my taste, very much track oriented bike and its not a twin.
@akshay: Thank you, i like the way Ninja's on-road presence and exclusivity.
Dandamudi Mohan Krishna: My long drives will be mostly to Chennai from Bangalore and some weakend drives less than 100Kms. May be once in a year i will go for 2-3 day trips if time/money/family etc permits so long drives than 350-400KMs/Month will be the most i may do. Very long drives is only a chance which you can negate for now.

Ankey: I like the way you said Ninja being premium. I live/work in Bangalore and Chennai is my second hometown so i guess there will not be any issues finding service center for Yamaha/Ninja.

My heart for now is tilted to Ninja300 for following Reasons, correct me if i am wrong on following points on Ninja
- Niggle free bike
- Exclusive (Compared to R3)
- Quality/Premium feeling
- Quality if drive (Handling/Suspension)
- Can use any normal petrol available in Indian Petrol bunks

If you feel that Ninja is the bike for you then you should go for it and it looks premium

And if you take the price and maintence cost then R3(lack of slipper clutch only) is a bang for buck and if you wait next year the R3 will get ABS also

Good luck with the purchase

5) let me make this point clear , people shouting that ninja is high maintenance bike are wrong
It has godd service interval of 6k kms and oil change at 12 k ( as per manual)
Fe in cities is 23-25 and 25-27 on highways
Yes the parts are expensive, however you have zero dep insurance and all other parts will last you fo good 15-20 k kms ( depends on usage)
So go with what your heart says.
You will however enjoy every km you ride with this machine.

One with oil change costs you around 3500 i have paid maximum of 3275 ( without chain clean and lubrication).
The actual cost of service is around anywhere between 900 to 1000 depending upon service centre.
All other costs are of consumables + taxes
