  • Help me in deciding between RE Himalayan/Duke 390

    My experience :
A rookie as I've ridden mostly 100cc bike during college. Now as I'm on my feet would like to explore motorcycle riding. I've done like 2000km of touring in my life time on my friends motorcycle. Luckily no bad experience at all. Although a beginner want to explore more in this field.

    My preferences :
    1) Quality ride
    2) Comfort
    3) Decent power to maneuver traffic and corners
    4) City ride is must that also in bangalore(heavy traffic)
    5) Fuel efficiency around 25 is no problem at all
    6) Touring with luggage once in 3-4 months

I've booked Royal Enfield Himalayan 3 days back because when I took the TD it was amazing and comfortable. Now a friend of mine has a friend who wants to sell his Duke 390 2015 model at ₹1,80,000. If its in top condition I can it too ₹1,70,000. This is the first time I'm spending so much money on something and I've been saving it for past 4 months. I'm just confused about it. On one hand its Royal Enfield with poor customer support and on other its Duke with bad comfort. Just confused about them.

I always feel himalayan is too much purpose built just for the himalayas.
I would say take a TR of mojo also and than decide.
Mojo has everything you are looking for.
Comfort, decent power, long range, refined engine
Duke, if and only if you want to
carve corners, mad acceleration, speed rush
      Himalayan, well
Bare bone bike, decent power, ideal tool for a DIY kind of person
      Busy finding peace

Go for RE HIMALAYAN, it's hell of a bike. As you have already booked the bike, you know the it can take ANY ROAD on earth 🌍. It's more refined, reliable, economic. It's looks AWESOME (may not to all). The point I am sure that it will NOT give you BACK PAIN..... plz don't CANCEL the booking.... 😜 😜 😝

As per your preferences you are a touring guy, so should look for comfort as driving all day with stiff suspension of the duke 390 will not be a good experience, I am not saying it cannot be done. there are people who have taken their RC and R15 to Leh

You should also TD the Mojo it will fill all requirements
No replacement for an engine Displacement

If you do highway run at high speed then get the duke remember 100 plus speed otherwise there is no point to get it.best is to get the bike that has more torque.it will give you pleasure.

                Thanks.

But CBR is out of budget and I don't like fairing bikes. Also seat position doesn't look comfortable for me.

                  Thanks for the reply.

That's why I booked Himalayan. It has great torque at low and mid range. With duke 200n390 I had to rev it a lot to get that sweet spot.

I did TD on mojo. There was something in the bike which was putting me off. It didn't felt as smooth as Himalayan. Plus too much of power without smoothness is not for me. That's why my second choice was a used Duke 390. It has great power but I did feel confident in it. Although never rode above 80 kmph.

Re: Used Duke 390 or Royal Enfield Himalayan ?

From my point of view go for Enfield.. u ll never get bored of it. Let me tell you, if u get Duke 390 it will be fun at first, but cmon all the horses jumping all the time even when u want to ride slow..? It will be really boring after while.

Secondly Royal Enfield opens a whole new world for u. Let it be Rider Mania, Himalayan odesey ,& more .. what does ktm has to offer ?? Orange day?? Will u be racing the whole time?

N those concerned about quality, have u ever seen old bullet riders whining about oil leaks,?? Royal Enfield has changed, they might not good as Japanese counterpars. But U get to build a relationship with your bike. That's what that matters right?

Sports bike age quickly, nor does a cruiser or roadster.. after 3- 4 years your KTM will look like junk , there be will whole new stable of plastic toys. I am not taking about KTM , look at a 2001 Honda CBR1000 n 2016 CBR 1000 a lot of difference right. Look a 2001 Honda Goldwing & 2016 Honda Goldwing.. it don't differ that much..

This is my personal opinion.. happy biking

                        Himalayan or Duke 390

I booked a Himalayan but cancelled it due to lot of problems it has been facing.. I know RE is not reliable but I still trusted that Ls410 would be reliable but somehow it's patching up its engine now.
Now I am considering Duke 390 . I am planning to keep the bike for a long term use. I heard 2016 has lot updates to its engine & other parts.
I am even considering BmW g310 but its a new engine again.
My requirement is Reliability. Is the Duke up to it?? I don't care how expressive oil is or whatsoever but the bike should nt fall apart all too often..

The Duke 390 has by now got quite a bit of history behind it. Both positive and negative, the bike is a known quantity. The Himalayan is still relatively new and therefore a bit of an unknown.

I would though be quite willing to bet that the BMW would be more reliable than its Austrian counterpart, at least in terms of longevity, from the get go. But i surely wouldn't want to bet when exactly that bike would actually make its way into India!

If Reliability is one of your most important concern, then its better to go for any model from any of the reputed Japanese manufactures. They have proven their mettle over the years.
