  • Planning to buy an entry level performance bike.

    Hello, I'm 22.
    Height: 5'8"
    Weight: 72 kgs.
    Budget: 1 - 1.5 lacs.

I will be using the bike in the city as well in the highways. My daily commute consists of around 10-15kms in city and around another 15 kms in the highway. And also weekend trips of about 100-200 kms.
I have shortlisted the following :

    1. Suzuki gixxer sf FI
(great bike but lack of 6th gear and bad headlights)
    2. Honda CBR 150
(proven honda engine, but cheap switchgear)
    3. Bajaj pulsar RS200
(another great bike, but faring vibration and tons and tons of other niggles. Also poor aftersales service)

I'm really inclined towards faired bike over the naked ones. I want a reliable machine with good aftersales service and with reasonable maintenance cost. Please suggest. I'm completely clueless right now!

Out of the 3 shortlisted, Gixxer SF makes more sense. Good reliable engine, headlights can be modified to your own needs, rev the nuts off it in 5th gear.

CBR 150 is outdated now, and the switch gear is straight form a splendor. Engine is a gem though.

RS200 will start vibrating the moment you take it out of showroom. The plastic quality is pathetic.

      Choose wisely.

Okay. Could you tell me, in what aspect is the cbr outdated?

Well brother, it has not been upgraded in any way since its launch, and there have been rumors about it getting a facelift and a long awaited update.
So it would not be good if you buy a bike and it is discontinued. Also the sales figures of CBR150R are constantly decreasing, you don't see many on roads.
Hence the advice of not opting for it, if you have other options available. Moreover, a switch console straight from a splendor on a bike worth 1.3 lakhs is not acceptable.

So if you have other options to choose from, which suit your needs, my advice would be go for them rather than CBR.
          Choose wisely.

I would choose the cbr over others simply for the fun of riding it and the gem of an engine. It's true that honda is careless towards the premium segment in India, but if a bike ticks all the boxes then why not.
Switchgear is cheap, but it can be ignored. SF lacks many things like 6th gear, liquid cooling, power, but it's fun to ride with an upright position and you can opt for the fuel injected variant.

Basically, the answer is what do you want out of your bike?

I'm inclined towards the cbr just because my dad had a honda shine! And what a marvelous bike it was! Probably one of the smoothest engines. And moreover the gixxer lacks a 6th gear and is also low on power figures!
I do not want to get bored with the low power of the gixxer because i would mostly be riding on the highway!

Is the cbr likely to be discontinued?

And what about the Pulsar rs200? Is it a good buy?

Have you considered the Yamaha R15? Has 6th gear, liquid cooling, deltabox frame (awesome handling), fuel injection, highly reliable Yamaha engine and the bike oozes premiumness and quality. Only con might be the committed riding posture, but that can be gotten used to.

If you're not averse to Naked bikes, the TVS Apache RTR 200 is an excellent VFM option well within your budget.

                  1) Looks like 6th gear is your first priority. In 150 cc segment only cbr150 & r15 have 6th gear. GS150 have 6th gear but it's not faired bike, this bike discontinued after gixxer launch.
I wonder, why suzuki didn't gave 6th gear to gixxer.

                  2) If you want to do 100+ on highways without any stress on engine then only cbr & r15 remains in your list.

                  3) If you like r15 v2 & ready to compromise on seating position go for it

                  4) if you like cbr150 & ready to handle lack of low end torque go for it. I bought cbr150 6 months ago & i don't care about rumours of discontiuety. If bike is discontinued, spare parts should be available for next 8 years by law.

R15 is also a proven machine! But my brother already got a r15 few months back. So It didn't make it upto my list!
The apache 200 is also a worthy bike, but i have always dreamt of owning a fully faired bike!

Brother, have you faced any issues with your cbr yet?
And how is the pillion comfort?

Same here bro.. I really liked the CBR250r when I was in college 2-3 years back. But now I don't think I will be putting my money on an old, outdated and soon to be phased out motorcycle. R15v3 is coming soon, even there are rumors of 2016 CBR150r to launch here.

Most of my friends have already got avenger, cbr150r, r15 recently and here I'm waiting patiently for the new Duke 390 to arrive ☺️

If your heart says CBR, then get it without any second thought.. IMO, the Gixxer SF and the RTR 200 doesn't make a better buy than the CBR.

What about the pulsar AS 200....projector lights, relatively smooth engine and falls within your budget

Why dont you also add R15s / R15 v2 in the list. I was skeptical too before buying the R15 due to its aggressive seating position. First week of my ownership, I was developing aches on my palms and shoulders frequently. Now I got used to the riding position. Boy-o-boy, I just love this small SBK.

Refined engine, enough power for city usage, Fi, Liquid cooling, state-of-the-art engine design, forged pistons, diAsil coated cylinder. Best in handling Delta box frame and OTR price comes upto 1.35L.

Only con I see is the short service interval - which might increase your maintenance cost. Just give it a thought.
