  • Help me buy a bike for a 1400 km long trip under Rs 1 lac

    Hello Motorheads,
I Have to go to Shirdi on 01 Feb 2017. I know its a lot of time but I am in a pickle of circumstances and I need all the help you can give.
(First a foreword- I currently own a Honda Stunner (which I ride and own), a Gixxer SF (which my brother owns and can lend me) and an RE Classic 350 (which my dad owns and will kill me if I touch it for a trip)).

    So,
Bottom line- I have a 125 cc Honda and a 155 cc Suzuki on which I can tour.

But last November I went for a trip to my hometown which is 300 km far on my Honda Stunner and realized that-
    1. I can occasionally tour on Honda Stunner for a short distance.
    2. It is mightily stressful for a 125 cc to go past 80 km/h.
    3. It is also very painful to tour on a bike like this.

    Hence,
I am planning to buy a bike before January 2017 (so I can properly Run-In the bike before the trip)

Now my budget is 1 lac max and I cannot decide on a bike.

Here are the points I have to consider:
    1. I have to travel almost 500 m daily from my home to my office (I usually walk to the office).
    2. Once a week I travel to My relatives (42 km away).
    3. I have always been a 'Sport Bikes' kinda guy (but I can change).
    4. I will plan regular trips every month from February onward (not more than 500 km one way).
    5. I need to shoot videos and charge the mobile on the go (photography is my second profession.

And here are the bikes that I have considered:
    1. Karizma R 2014 - Read good reviews (Tubeless Tyre, Windscreen, Kick start, Bright Lights, Powerful engine).
    2. Bajaj Cruise 220 - Read good reviews ( No tubeless tyre, windscreen, no kick start, bright lights, Powerful engine).
    3. Bajaj Street 220 - Everything is same as cruise sans the windscreen but I like the matte treatment and heard that windscreen can be fixed on it).
    4. Any other bike you guys suggest.

    Query Approved

I would have suggested the AS200 and Apache 200, but the Pulsar isn't being sold currently AFAIK.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Have you considered Apache RTR 200V ? The bike holds solid grounds from all corners but the seating position might be quite sporty which isn't recommended for long rides.
Pulsar AS200 hits all the checkboxes.
Karizma R is no longer manufactured, afaik. Not the legendary R model..the ones looks pretty horrible from it's looks - but it's totally subjective.
Avenger 220 Street is the most comfortable bike in the lot, but the bike doesn't have as good braking as other sports commuter.

I will vote for Bajaj Avenger Street 220, in spite of weak in braking department, however on road price sans this . Good color choices. Cruise 220 full of chrome which gets boring after 6 months. This is personal taste.
        Avoid noise pollution. Avoid honking.

Check out the pulsar 220 too...still a very relevant and easy on the pocket bike, not to mention torquey.

To be honest Sir, I would kill for an apache rtr 200 (read Apache Fan)..
            Only few concerns:
            1. Wind Blast.
            2. Short Gearing, cant tour at or above 90.
            3. I think I can manage the riding stance.

            Thanks for the reply Sir,
            Now
Pulsar AS200 goes above the budget..
Karizma R which is sold currently is ok I guess. also ticks the right boxes like AS 200 but in budget.
Avenger 220 Street I am agreed on but some sa that these bikes might not last long.. I am buying a bike for at least 7 years or so..
            Please suggest.

I agree with you completely Sir.
Except for the fact that it does not have tubeless tyres. Is it a big deal?
and what about the windscreen attachment? Is it possible?

You are right. But I have heard about the life of these bikes are not good (I might be wrong).
But folks told me to either go for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda or Hero...
I should mention that I am going to use the bike for at least 7 years.
So build quality is also an issue.

Well I am buying the Avvy 220 street in a day or two. . Similar purpose.
Most bajaj bikes are prone to problems after a while if mishandled in long run.
However they aren't that bad and have improved over the years.
Though it still has a long way to go before it comes close to the likes on Honda and Yamahas.

PS : The new avvy 220/150 Street are being equipped with TL tires. It may take a while before fresh stock arrives but otherwise. The dealer here has agreed for the TL tires without any extra charge.

If maintained properly, than longevity should not be an issue. Avenger owners can throw some light on this.

You already have 155cc Suzuki, there is no point in considering another 150cc (under 1 Lakh budget) in Yamaha or any other. The price range is briefly 1 Lakh 100-150cc, 1.5 to 2 Laks 150-200cc...... price increases linearly depending upon the cc and features.

Avenger Street is 220cc and produces 19PS. Very decent power in the price bracket of less than a lakh on road price.

For long rides, comfort takes over the speed called cruise. Hence low seat is an added advantage for low CG, less fatigue, comfortable rides.

For tubeless tyres you may consider Richardson's advice.

Update : I went to showroom today to take TR and the Street 220 was damn comfortable coming from any avg commuter bike. Though I felt the riding stance was totally different, specially the footrest position. The rear braking footpegs felt awkward for street riding but I think it will be awesome on highways. Also the front wheel braking seems too strong compared to rear when it comes to stopping the bike. Throttle response is very good and smooth acceleration.
I am booking it tomorrow at on road price of 1,0,500 rs which includes 1500rs for additional optional accessories and 700rs for mandatory acc, and 699rs of 2yrs of extended warranty on piston/engine.
Ordering in black red and tubeless variant which the dealer said will arrange if booked in advance.

That is a wise choice mate. I was just about to recommend the same, Buy the Street and install the wind-shield.

                      Good luck !!

                        Congrats man.
                        Nice bike I agree.
And I am a kinda guy who rode a CD Deluxe for 07 years and without any hitch.
I think I treat a bike good. (I carry a bike wax in my bag all the time).
I regularly get my bike washed (At least a month)
So that covers the handling department.

About the improvement over the years, i agree on that too.
That's why I am super confused. Specially the Tyre.

                        Seriously?
                        Nice. Is it official?
Didn't know about this. This solves everything.
By the way, what about the New Karizma R (2014)??
Lots of friends are stuck on it.
Coz now only two bikes are on my mind:
                        1. Bajaj Street.
                        2. Karizma R.

And I agree that the power figures are decent for a 220 cc engine.
And I am almost made up on 220 Street, But can you confirm on the windscreen? Can it be fixed on Street.

                        Why?
On road price in Delhi goes to 99,000/- plus 1500 is 1,00,500/-
                        plus 700 is 1,01,200/-
                        Why the Extra 3,800/-??
and what about black & red variant. As per my info street comes in only two variants: Matte Black & matte green.
                        Please clarify sir.

                          2. Karizma R.

                          Thanks for the reply Sir.
And I agree that the power figures are decent for a 220 cc engine.
And I am almost made up on 220 Street, But can you confirm on the windscreen? Can it be fixed on Street.

Pls see the Archer84 reply on wind screen fixing. Visit the dealer to get conformation on tyre as well.

                              Thanks for the info sir.
So Yes, I inquired about the windscreen and yes its doable.
But also got to know that the Street 220 with Tubeless tyres is not available.
They did have the fresh lot of Street 150s with Tubeless Tyres, but nothing about Street 220.
So what should I do now?

Also, Me and my wife were talking about the trip and my wife says I should get a ZMR.
Which raises the budget to 1.20 lakh on road.
                              Will that be wise?
I trust a Hero product more for obvious reasons, So should I get a ZMR?
