  • A second hand bike, a new KTM's replacement? Help!

    Hello everyone.
Recently I shifted to Bangalore for job purpose from Mumbai. I'll be here in Bangalore till 21st November and after that being posted to Tumkur. Again from Tumkur, my job location is around 10km one side. I need to decide for a bike within this time. I'll be here in Karnataka for a year probably. I'm looking for a fast machine with good acceleration and long distance on weekends.

I was looking forward to buy a KTM duke 390 as a new bike but then the 2017 version was unveiled at EICMA. Now the problem is I'm in love with that 2017 version but also can't wait till mid-2017 for it. I need to own one now. Hence, I've decided to go for a second hand bike and then later upgrade to the 2017 KTM. Is this the right thing? Reliability?

Also I'm upgrading from a 1983 RE Bullet 350. I can't bring it here as for registration issue and stability issue of 1983!
So my Questions are as follows:

    1. Is my decision of buying an used bike for a year good enough with my reason?
    2. Used bike budget: 50k to 80k.
    3. Age: 25
    4. Height: 5'7
    5. Shortlisted: KTM Duke 200/ Bajaj Pulsar 200NS. (KTM Duke390?)
    After reading this (http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/general-...-cbr-250r.html) A Honda CBR250?
    6. Average running: Probably 20-25kms a day, 150-200kms weekend probably to Bangalore and surrounding areas. Also wweekend trips of 500kms sometime.
    7. Fuel Mileage: Anything above 25-30kmpl

The plan of cancelling the new duke390 was due to 2017 KTM and also the resale if I bought one.
Do suggest and if the budget issue is there, I might increase if the suggestion works out for me.

    Thanks!

    Query Approved

There are two important points you have mentioned. One is that you need a bike NOW and two that you like the 2017 Duke.

There is no guarantee that you will get a good deal on a used bike. So search around for a used bike, if you get something, go for it. If not just book the Duke man. Or just get any old used bike and take the hit whenever you decide to sell it off.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

      Hey, Thanks Monk.
Yes indeed I need a bike within two weeks. I'm not looking for a new duke until 2017.

After reading other posts, I'm leaning towards more to the CBR250. I think I'll just hang around asking in the ownership threads but again I was looking for any inputs here other than my thoughts or options like a less displacement bike or 2nd hand bike with good resale value meaning if bajaj 200ns will get a good value or is bajaj opted as a 2nd hand?

Also I'm checking out options for the second hand bikes online, like on droom, olx. Does anyone know about their credibility for such sites?

Any Bangaloreans to help regarding the market for 2nd hand bikes? I'm new to this, hence don't know anyone here.

        Hello Farer,

I bought a second-hand Hero Honda Karizma 2004 model last year October. I found the bike on OLX classifieds. There were 8 pictures posted and was quoted at 33,000 INR.

Before buying a second-hand motorcycle, keep your expectations low, if possible very low...The "value-for-money" judgement is based on a number of factors.

Transfer documents, RTO papers, Insurance, Emission certificate, Number plate with fully visible registration number and warranty cards (if any)

        1. Check for engine condition/performance
        2. Check for proper functioning of clutch, gear-box and throttle response
        3. Check for the condition/functioning of battery, cables, tires and switches, headlight
        4. Check for engine-oil levels, disc brake oil-level, fork-oil levels, lube on chain
        5. Check for dents, scratches, stickers missing, logo missing, headlight visibility
        6. Buy a bike cover, cleaning cloth, helmet-lock and a certain can of spray called WD 40 or Zorrik (I have heard it to be very useful)

Prepare to change/replace certain set of spares. Look online for the bike with either a specific budget or a specific bike in mind. With either of the variable constant, increase/decrease the value of the other variable mildly to find the right balance.

        Let the search begin!

I don't know much about second hand bikes either as I avoid them religiously. However, I tried to sell my RTR180ABS on droom and they actually scheduled an appointment with an "expert", who came down to my place to value the bike and check if it is in good condition. Unfortunately, my RTR's ABS was toast, so he valued the bike at 17k and told me that the bike would sell for about 40k if I fixed the ABS. I chose not to sell with droom as I got a much better offer of 35k on quickr and the buyer said he'd fix the ABS himself. However, I was really impressed with the level of attention the "expert" gave to checking the bike. I think droom may be a safer bet than going on sites that don't send in an inspector to check on the bike that's being sold.

Gonna keep that in mind sirjee! Btw how did your Karizma 2004 performed considering you took a 11year old bike. Reliability? Is it worth going for 2012 models?

Great! That's sounds trustworthy. I'll check up with them today.

Btw I looked upon at Quikr, I found a 2012 CBR 250 ABS variant ,14k mileage for 1L which he's quoting. I'm going to check it in person today and let's see how it is. Also there are few other bikes which I'll check in this week. I'll be checking them alone, can any xbhpian assist if possible?

The bike was in okay-ish condition when I bought it. I got it serviced thoroughly very recently and it is now performing at a whole new level of awesomeness.

It is definitely worth going for 2012 models, as long as the bike is not abused (run less than 50k KMS) and the bike does not need any parts-replacement.

Honda CBR 250R with ABS.. yahooo, this is a very good looking bike bro

                That's great to hear man!

Again things have changed at my end now. Parents and brother are advising me not to go for a second hand but a new one temporary because getting a CBR250ABS will be around 1L in good condition and that's too much for me. Now I was thinking of going for a monthly rental bike/scooter till 2017 KTM isn't launched or a used bike at 20-30k price. But again in that I need a bike which can do long rides considering reliability too. Now since plan has changed, I was thinking of Karizma or a Pulsar 220. I don't know how reliable will they be or spares. Will there be a resale possibility after a few months?

                Any suggestions on Karizma?

Get a Pulsar 180 or 220. They are dirt cheap in second hand market and are easy to maintain, and there are so many of them on sale that you have unlimited options to choose from. Moreover, even if something goes wrong, the spare parts are cheap and easily available. And getting rid of it next year won't be too difficult.

Karizma will be bit more expensive than Pulsars, the condition and reliability will totally depend on how the bike was kept by the previous owner, hence no comments.

To sum up for a temporary solution a Pulsar is a best bet. The sheer number of pulsars on roads makes it cheap and easy to maintain.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Thanks man! Again I'm now considering the pulsar which I left out just because of reliability issue. Choosing out of a used bike is just getting tougher and tougher for me!

Bro. Just a quirky thought. Why not consider a Navi? You can buy it, keep it and have fun on it! It can manage a good 200km round trip. It's a monkey bike, sure, but it's a cool little thing to have. Won't weigh in so heavy on your pocket either.

Don't underestimate Pulsars. I also had the same though before my second hand NS200. You should get a descent condition 220 or 180 for a dirt cheap price. A Machine is only as reliable as you keep it.
