Is it safe? Well absolutely - it's one the most reliable tourers out there! Can it be discontinued? Only Honda knows. But you'll continue getting spares for the next 3-4 years at least (7 years by the rulebook though).
If CBR fits your usage and budget, go for it. What is new today will get old next year and obsolete in 3-4 years anyways.

Well hop along brother, Most of them are in same boat (Including me) and the boat is standstill. As far considered its upto you to take the call.
CBR250R is a no regret bike, Only downside will be your thoughts if your cant process the aging looks. If u still hoping for upgrade then your thoughts will age and more regrets in delaying. There is a world of Mods too, to keep the love fresh. Discontinuation, i cannot comment on same grounds on expectation of upgraded CBR

If you are sticking to CBR then only God can help, If you like to consider others then the whole world will.

With restricted budget there are no much Proven tourer, You can consider Mojo which might release ABS in 2017. Its Go or Mojo. Call is yours.

Its certainly safe no question, but if you're not fixated on fairing bikes then It makes better sense to look at the Bajaj Dominar.

And it's exactly opposite to the CBR where its a tried & tested thing, the Dominar is fresh of the line, so if you're even a moderate risk taker Dominar offers quite few edges over the CBR.

eg.
- It's fresh off the line : so for atleast next year OR probably few months you'll enjoy exclusivity.
- I don't think reliability will be much concern since it's basically a KTM390 in sleeker avatar - so performance is quite guaranteed.
- And for sure, it's also more "Chic Looking" than the CBR

If you can wait, wait for the reviews of the new Dominar400. The first few batches are test mules, so I'll advice to wait for at least 6 to 8 months after the date of release. use this time to investigate and know more about the bike. Read user ownership experiences, talk to the owners and ask lots of questions, then make an informed decision.
If the new Bajaj suits you, go for it, else CBR250R is not going anywhere.

I don't know why but mojo's looks aren't quite appealing to me. I like dominar 400. I think I'll wait for a while to check it's reviews. Then go for either of cbr or dominar. Thanks

Yes, the Dominar looks really good on its specs and the price is a shocker. But I'm considering waiting until some reviews are out.

According to Bajaj, the Dominar does 0-100 in 8.3 seconds. That's half a second more than Bonda's 250, if the quote is to be believed.

Then, the price of 1.8L OTR. Quality concerns are valid? Time only knows.

If you can wait a few months, follow the Dominar closely. If you want a bike which does long distance in little fuss, the CBR is good enough. When people say it's outdated, they mean it doesn't have the looks, the sensors that KTM has. But a look at the ownership threads suggest that maybe all those sensors have a propensity to fail. On brand new bikes.

The CBR engine has little complaints. However, you must have seen the classified ad wherein a guy wants to sell his silver CBR 250 because he is bored, probably of its reliability. That's the reason most of the guys I've spoken to offline say why they've sold/upgraded their CBR 250.


As a CBR 250 owner, I say go for the CBR only if you plan to keep the bike 5+ years or 1 lakh+ kms.

Does it really matter if you are touring. Hell it does not matter even in everyday usage. Half a second is nothing.

Reliable vehicles are usually boring. Look at the Toyota Corolla.

On paper, the D400 is a clear winner. In real life, the little Honda weighs in a bit more thanks to Jap engineering and literal hassle free maintenance! w.r.t parts availability in case the product is phased out, you will have a supply of parts, because either HMSI will introduce the 300r (which shares almost 80% of the 250r's parts) or jump into the adv range (highly unlikely).

It's not about reliability = boring, or which is faster or has more power or has more poser value. At the end of the day, you need a bike to take you from A to B, with minimal drama, in comfort and one which strikes a chord in your heart everytime you look at it. For me, the CBR does all that, it might be a D400 or a Duke 390 for you. What i'm trying to say is, every person has a different outlook towards things, and i'd ask you to take in all the information from the ownership threads, calculate pretty closely to what you expect of a motorcycle and take the final call. Do not be swayed by owners pushing you to a Honda or a Bajaj. I think Dominar's are now available in all major Bajaj showrooms, make it a point to head out there in the weekend and collect some info about financing if needed (stay away from HDFC), and ask/book for a test ride and just check the general pulse of the Bajaj retailer to see if he's only interested in making a sale, or would provide you good after sales service exp as well.

I don't see Dominar's pricing in any place other than Coimbatore and Chennai (in Tamilnadu). If Bajaj launching it in phasing manner, it will take little time to come to your place (to get test ride).

Any how, you're gonna wait and every manufacturer will make their engine BS IV complaint before April 2017. So eventually Honda too will upgrade CBR250 to BS IV.

You can take your own time to decide.

Buying a bike on a test ride is not recommended. Most often, the test ride bike would have issues, get dropped often, basically treated like a whore.

I suggest waiting a few months for the user feedback of 5k, 10k kms. That's what I would do, if I was in the market. Just remember the initial batches of the Duke 390. It took KTM a year or so to iron out the problems.
