  • Hero maestro edge or Suzuki Access 2014

Didn't think I would find myself here again.

I already own a suzuki gixxer 155 and I am now using it only for recreational rides in the weekends and during vacation.

I take the busiest roads to work and back home during peak hour traffic. I have a small condition now. I get stiff neck and have lost weight considerably. This means that carrying a backpack on shoulder in hot weather and bumper to bumper traffic on my motorcycle has become A PAIN. I want to ride free and unfortunately can't do that when I am going to office or returning back home. I get serious amounts of pain on shoulders, back and neck. I am working out and taking medical help to improve my health but that will take more than 6 months from now to produce any positive results. Let me not go into gear changes and braking every now and then.

Meanwhile, I've been a regular customer for Uber and Ola. While I like the comfort of it in the traffic, it's not economical. Just for the record, monthly cab fares amount to Rs. 10k. Saving the same amount for 6 months can get me a good scooter. My family is also gutted about my transport choices. I use public transport but again, I have to carry my backpack and strain my shoulders and neck. The next 7 - 7.5 hours at office in front of PC becomes a pain.

So now, I'm planning to invest in a scooter to carry my backpack and other belongings along with me in a better way - convenient and comfortable. I need ample leg space, underseat storage and more importantly a great seating posture for a pain-free riding experience. Occasionally, I will have to take parents or friends on board. So I prefer good space for two as well. I've mentioned my height in the title.

I happened to ride a Jupiter recently. It looks big but it was actually compact. The engine showed no response initially but picked up speeds once the vehicle got moving. I am not much into looks but it looks like activa. I like the feel on the scooter but I had to scoot back into pillion seat for finding a comfortable riding position. I liked how cheap it was and also how it has tons of convenient features. It was so much fun riding it, I didn't want to slow down. Esp the feeling of just twisting the crisp throttle without any gears and zipping through vehicles. AHHHhh, orgasmic!

Now let me be more specific.

    1. I don't mind the price - I don't want a vespa or aprilia. They are way too pricey for what I want. Anyway, I would prefer something below 60 thousand rupees with lots of practical touches and space. I don't mind stretching the price but will not do if it can do everything that a small scoot like jupiter can do.

    2. Looks should be decent. Must not make people say it's ugly. It may not have so much bling and style like highly priced scoots but must be attractive and unisex/masculine.

    3. Should be zippy. Esp for quick overtakes in city traffic. I will be that person who would peacefully ride on the left lane and overtake only when I sense trouble/ want to have fun. So, fun! it should be be stable as well while having fun.

    4. Must give me a comfortable posture. I was okay with Jupiter.

    5. I don't know how other scooters are. Don't want activa for sure. So tell me how are other scooters and what can be good for me. That's why I'm posting this.

    6. Space - can take my helmet under the seat? great! If not, must help me take my parent to grocery purchase and return back with bags of all shapes. Would be great if it can fit my backpack under the seat. If not, on the floor board without messing with my legs.

    7. Knee space! I'm a sucker for that. There's a comfort in not folding the knees.

    8. Some fun and more comfort!COMFORT!!

    9. Reliability - looking to increase my usage and so I wouldn't want it to break down when I'm riding on it.

    10. HASSLE FREE SERVICE AND OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE - I will keep it for 5 years at least. I will also want the mechanics to not spoil my scoot.

    11. SAFETY - TOP PRIORITY.

    12. I've become lazy, need more convenient features than what's found on my motorcycle. Would love to get things done with less movements.

    13. Shouldn't feel cramped when I'm carrying someone on the pillion. Told you, seat for two.

Thanks for patiently reading all this through.

Time changes. It also changes people. Hence I have to go with it in order to survive and eventually live.

Please suggest and give me insights into all relevant scooters!

I'm also 5.11 and using TVS Jupiter for last 2 years. Would like to share my experience.

Pros : It's lightweight and fun to ride in city traffic. Mileage around 50 if driven sensibly. Has a good storage space. Underseat storage can accommodate full face helmet. Enough leg space for long legs. Very reliable. I have not spent a single penny on repairs, except fuel and regular servicing.

Cons: Stiff suspension for single rider. Suspension works Perfectly with weight of pillion. I was using it for my daily commute to office which is 50km to and fro. End up with neck and back pain. Don't know who's to blame bad roads or Stiff suspension.

I'd recommend the New 2016 Suzuki Access 125 over the Jupiter. I've ridden both scooters extensively in the past few months since we have both scooters in the family, and the Access is way better in acceleration and performance, and perfect for zipping through traffic, weighs only a 102kgs and is as efficient as the Jupiter. You should get the deluxe variant with the Disc brakes and Alloys if your budget allows it.

Is disc brake all that necessary for a scooter? Okay does it cost more than rs. 60k?

I would love to continue my patronage with suzuki. I feel that the jupiter looks more masculine/ unisex than access. It's retro and cool but also sleek and feminine. Anyway, how do people react to it on road? I don't mind spending more than rs 60k for it and more for the deluxe variant. But is it really necessary because cheaper scoots may do what it does at a lower price?

How is the let's by suzuki? I hear it's engine specs are as same as access.

Front Disc brake will shorten stopping distances thereby improving safety. It'll also last longer / require less maintenance than a Drum brake.

To me, it doesn't look feminine at all. It looks like a typical unisex scooter and doesn't attract much attention. The looks aren't anything radical but the 125cc motor is a gem.

Cheaper 100cc scoots will get you from point A to B, but in the Access you get a much better performing scooter with very similar efficiency for a few grand more.

The Deluxe variant gets a front disc brake and good-looking Alloys. I personally find it well worth the premium.

No that is a 110cc and not as good as the 2016 Access.

Both the variants - disc and non disc cost more than Rs. 65k on road.

Taking me from point A to point B is precisely all I want now. But, with better comfort than my motorcycle. Now I think that I don't wanna spend more than Rs. 60K on a scoot esp if a small scoot is going to do the same as a 125 cc scoot. I am not much into performance in scooters.

Coming to the disc brake part, I agree. The two motorcycles I have owned had discs and one of them, ABS, additionally. However I would prefer something like combi brake system found in Hondas. I wouldn't want to spend extra for discs on a scoot and now I even think discs will cross Rs. 60K. I don't know why I am restricting my budget now but I would definitely spend around Rs. 65k on-road if the scoot is good despite not having disc brakes.

Thanks for your ownership experience. Can you suggest any other brand or scooter? I feel let's will be too cramped for my height.

If TVS Jupiter is within your budget, go for it. Meets most of your requirements. You could also consider Yamaha Alpha and Hero Maestro Edge.

                  Among the standard choices
Go for Jupiter, for 110cc engine.
Go for Access 125 for bigger engine, disc brakes. Fun to ride and picks up speed quickly.
Go for Hero Duet for 110cc engine and combi braking system, cell phone charging port, hero reliability.

Take test rides and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Re: In need of convenient, comfortable, reliable. safe and good looking scooter for a 5'11" guy.

                      Thanks guys. Here's an update.

I really appreciate suzuki's customer service.

Two days ago I signed up for test ride on suzuki's website.

I got a call yesterday from Jains Suzuki, Chennai for a test ride. I went around 3 p.m today and took a really long test ride on both the drum and disc brake variants. I should say I'M SOLD.

I had previously thought of buying Jupiter for many convenient features. I had also ridden it. I had to adjust myself and it was difficult for me to find the right riding posture even though the space was ZYADA. I should say suzuki access 125 has the best riding posture for a tall guy like me who comes from owning geared motorcycles and is looking for a comfortable scoot.

                      Here's a gist of my experience -

Reached the showroom and asked for a test ride of access. I was allowed to ride both the disc and drum brake equipped vehicles. I was taken to their godown nearby and we took the drum brake access; WE - me and the showroom fellow.

First feel - *swears* looks heavy but it is the lightest full size scoot I've been on! So easy and light to bring it out rolling.

Engine started quickly and the bike was quite and smooth. First throttle twist was not scary at all. The scoot moved swiftly and I went off roading! The road from the godown was actually mud and sand! I was having a pillion and I could still feel the lightness of the vehicle! I started playing with it - left, right, left, right and it didn't skid a bit! Amazing grip on sand even with a pillion. The drum brake had great feel but took time to show it's power.

I went to main roads which were laid well. Total fun! Zipped through traffic and even the smallest of gaps I had not taken any two wheeler into. In service lanes, there were huge trucks and tempos coming against us and I had to turn in quickly into the littlest of the gaps available. Again the scoot was in total control! Easy U-turns with pillion! No heaviness! Amazingly short turning radius - JUPITER EAT THIS.

We went back to the godown and there was a disc brake access waiting for us, actually me. Looks like this was a newer scoot and felt more eager - prolly freshly taken out. The disc brake was like wood. I was like, 'I'm not buying this'. The showroom boy warned me to carefully use the front brake on sand and on turns. After a few metres, I realised that even though it lacked feel, it stopped the vehicle quicker than drum brake version. There's a feel to it but it's heavy. You can feel that on the footboard - like the front forks pushing against the footboard everytime you brake. Actually the discs were still in break in period. It worked on my return trip to the godown - I started pumping the lever and I could gradually feel it's working. When I hit the brake one last time to stop in front of the godown, it locked the front wheel. The tyres held their grip and I could hear and see the skid prints of the front tyre on the sandy road. I was glad it worked.

On both the variants I had immense fun with the rear drum brake. It was easy to lock and drift - fishtailing on sandy surfaces should be common. Couple disc brake with rear drum brake and you can feel safe and stop the scoot quickly even with a pillion.

Surprisingly, the suspension setup is amazing and the floor board doesn't scrape the ground when going on roads that looked in sand dunes. The rear is stiffer than front and it is for a reason. I experienced the plush ride when I was at the pillion seat. Talking about the seat!!! So spacious for the pillion even when I scoot back as far as possible! When I was the pillion, I could still seat a person behind me! Nice space! The comfort is also influenced by how you change throttle when the going gets tough. It's crisp and the feel is amazing. You wouldn't want to slow down.

The front tyre is bigger right so it feels light and also gives amazing feedback to the handlebar. I could sense every single thing I was rolling over with the bike.

The rear tyre is small and looks disproportionate in photos. Only in photos. In real both sync so well. I think they have made it small so that it doesn't affect pick up and as well gives the right feedback at the front.

What else can I say! It's super easy to flick, underseat fits my helmet and I'm ready to spend more than Rs. 60k on it! It's doesn't look girly in person and is a very premium looking scoot. People of any age can use it, just like vespa. All in all the dealer was very cooperative and I had fun. I will be buying it in november. One more suzuki to my garage. I'm a suzki patron officially.

To describe the scoot in short - She's a graceful and confident lady who is dressed slick and with whom you would want to go on multiple dates, to fancy dinners, to dance salsa/ tango or to the ball, just to finally marry her in the end! She is damn trustworthy to age with peacefully.

Just buy it guys! It's the best at the moment. I wish you all luck to get a perfectly manufactured piece and enjoy the reliability of the brand!

To tvs jupiter - I'm going to ride you one more time and it's the only chance to get me! I'm already sold to this comfortable scoot!

See that's why I told you that going for the Access over the Jupiter is a no-brainer. I ride both scooters on a daily basis and that's why I was trying to convince you that putting in the extra cash for the Suzuki makes sense as it's superior to the TVS in almost every facet. It's good that you experienced it firsthand and realized it.

So what's the price difference between the drum and the disc / alloys variants?

Out of excitement I asked only the price of disc brake variant and the on road was somewhere around Rs 65k and special edition is around Rs 68k with diwali discounts and offers - which include free accessories and extended warranty. I won't purchase it before diwali. So I might have to wait to know the exact prices. I will definitely buy disc brake variant only.

My parents are also sold to the scooter and they badly want it for the pillion space. I'd be their driver once we get the scoot :P

I guess 65k is for the Drum brake variant. The Disc & Alloys version cost me 72k on-road in Bangalore.

Did you check Honda Activa, this comes with CBS. Good for stability and it helps as well.
Same price range may be less even with added safety feature.
