  • Which Bike or Scooter - for Neck & Back Pain

    Hello All,

Recently I got Neck pain and already have mild back pain, have taken treatment and nowadays commuting to office through shared taxi.

Previously I was driving RTR 160 FI, have sold it 4 months back.

Now I am confused which one to go for Scooter or Bike and which one.

    1. Budget: Min 60k - Max 90k (for good bike can extend little)

    2. Usage: Daily office commutation up & down 30kms with some roads have pot holes & patches.

    3. Age: 34, Height: 5.6 & Weight: 63

I had few thoughts on bike & scooter`: Scooter - Activa or Fascino or Jupitor. Bike - Avenger or Unicorn or ThunderBird (But RE creates lots of vibes and also budget is high)

Have done some research over internet many people mentioned riding Scooter for long will cause back pain, also many friends are telling not to go for Scooters. So confused on which one to go f

I want confortable smooth ride with no vibes in handlebar & rear, also better shocks and others.

If scooter is fine, my budget will be a sweet pocket, but that is a doubt.

I have recently bought Platina Comfortec becos of same reason as yours, i am happy with its performance till now. Used to ride TB 350 which was good on highway but never designed for bad roads.

No scooter would be comfortable for your back. My father has the same problem. I would suggest you the Honda Unicorn, which is great in comfort, even though on a heavier side. Platina has a well sorted suspension aswell, but as your travel is 30kms, its good to have a higher CC bike, with the safety of disk break. Do take Test ride.

+1 for the Unicorn. I'm a happy owner of the Unicorn 150 for the past 7 years with close to 50k on the ODO. The riding posture is very relaxed and the ride quality is very good. The gear ratios are city friendly and will forgive you even if you pull from as low as 30Kmph in the 4th gear, though not advisable. The bike has never let me stranded even once and it is one reliable piece of machine that has lived up to its name so far with me. Last but not the least, the bike is very pocket friendly.

The weight is slightly on the heavier side but that has never posed a problem for me. So I suggest you take a TD and then decide.

          Cheers!

Never thought of Bajaj product except for Avenger, will give a TD of Platina.

Yes many people mentioned not to go for scooter anyways I don't like scooter, since it is coming within budget thought about it. After you guys mentioned about Platina, did some googling, some guys have praised about the suspension and in spec they mentioned as "

All praise for Unicorn, even my first bike should have been Unicorn, since there was a delay of 6 months waiting I went for RTR FI (2008), now I am thinking whether RTR only caused my neck pain. But how is the new Unicorn? Which is totally different than the old one. I think it's coming around 90k, and I guess Avenger is 10 to 15k higher. Also I heard many complaints about after sales from Honda.

No thumps up for Avenger from anyone, some friends suggested Avenger they told Avenger is Cruiser style riding so it will be comfortable to ride, anyways will TD Platina, Unicorn and Avengers as well.

            Avenger Gold edition looks pretty.

Please do not considerr Activa as its ride is very stiff and hard. It will send all the jerks through its suspension to its driver. If you are looking for scooters please consider Vespa. It will be over the budget but its suspension is allegedly good. Not the Aprila brands the original Vespa brand. I do not know about Yamaha scooters but its bikes are pretty decent. I had one for over 10 years loved its handlings and its suspension.

I personally don't think the new CB Unicorn 150 is any different from the old one. Yes the ASC of Honda is average. The attention your bike gets will be minimal as the volume of bikes coming in Honda's svc is just huge. But once you complete the free services, you can always choose better 3rd party mechanics. The availability of spares won't be an issue either with the svc or with 3rd party mechanics, so though the Honda service will be just average, I suggest not to consider the service a major factor in striking off Unicorn from your list.

I found the position of the gear lever in the Avenger a bit awkward, may be that's to blame my height. You can surely include Avenger too in your list of TDs. I don't see a lot of people suggesting the V series from Bajaj. Although I don't see anything wrong with V15 as it checks all your boxes, experts may throw more light.

                Cheers!

I like the design of Vespa, was a fan from LML times, I am in Chennai; there are only two sales & service centres, previously there was only one in Chennai, which are bit far from my place, heard ASC of Vespa is average and we can't service it outside, also the price is more, those are the things stopping to not to go towards Vespa. Will try to do TD and see.

Thanks for the tip. I went to Honda showroom, they told Unicorn is not available for TD and may be after few days bike will be ready for TD and they have only white CB Unicorn 160 available, for other colors 1 month waiting period, same for old Unicorn 150.

Apart from that I took TD of Yamaha Fascino, Cygnus Alpha, TVS Jupiter, Activa 4G & 125 and recently New Suzuki Access.

                  First went to Yamaha
                  1. Average Sales representatives, okayish proper response, no clear explanation.
                  2. After TD, felt okaish only for both Fascino and Cynus Alpha, felt more vibes in my hand not sure whether I am driving bike to scooter that too in gap of 4 months.
                  3. More fiber body.
                  4. They didn't allow to go with the pillion rider.
                  5. Some rough manual quotation.
                  6. 1500 off on accessories.

                  Next TVS
                  1. Drove Jupiter SX, felt better than Yamaha.
                  2. Better response from sales.
                  3. Drove with the pillion rider.
                  4. Clear computerised quotation.
                  5. I was worried about ASC of TVS, as I was the owner of Apache RTR FI and fought many times with them for pathetic service.
                  6. 30% off on accessories.

                  Next Bajaj for Avenger
                  1. Pathetic sales, no proper response
                  2. No bike for TD, initially they told to wait after enquiring price waited out for some time but no one showed up, so we left.
But received a call on Monday and sales person asked, when are you going to book sir?

                  Next went to Honda
                  1. Very good response from the sales person.
                  2. Saw Activa 4G, which has new matte finish colors which are looking awesome, comes with BSIV complaint, AHO, charger point and some changes. 15 days for delivery since FC for 4G is yet to complete, price is coming around 67k.
                  3. Saw Activa 125 also, which has better telescopic shocks in front, so I thought 125 is better than 4G.
                  4. Only white is available in CB Unicorn 160, for other colors there is waiting a period of 1 month - same for old Unicorn 150.
                  5. TD Activa 4G & 125, 4G was smooth since it is a new vehicle, the sales person told I was the first person to TD 4G there. Unicorn wasn't available for TD.
                  5. 30% off on accessories.

After which I decided to go for CB Unicorn 160 or Activa 125, but in 125 only white is available, for other colors there is waiting a period of 1 month so decided on 4G or Unicorn, ruled out others. Have to TD Unicorn.

Just yesterday went to check Suzuki.
                  1. Good response from sales person.
                  2. Proper explanation.
                  3. New Access Special edition was looking good, only concern is it comes only in white.
                  4. After TD of Access, I didn't felt any vibes, so got in confusion which is better Access or Activa
                  5. Extended warranty - 5years or 65000 kms .
                  5. There is an Paytm or Card offer of 4000 / 3500 cashback, no other offers on accessories.

Mr.Shankhar, I didn't know the source of your information. But I politely say you are misinformed/misleaded. First I would like to tell you, I own a vespa, bought for my wife on December 2012, but i ride it a lot. I will clarify all the wrong information one by one.

                    1) There are 4 sales & service centers in chennai. But one catch, when you buy a vespa, you cannot service it by outside mechanics because of nonavailability of spares.
spares are readily available in vespa service centers though, for customer service. There is a customer care toll free no. also

                    2) ASC of vespa is not average, It is good. They like to maintain the brand value & its exclusivity. Just Voice out your problems in service (usually there won't be), issues would be solved.Calls from vespa customer care usually approaches you and you can tell any issues you face. you can fix appointments through calls, if given at time, service would be done & returned promptly.

                    3) Price is more. I do understand your opinion & respect it.The reason may seem illogical, they would like to maintain exclusivity, hence the price.
but at the same time, it has features which is not found in any other scooters in India. Monocoque chassis, Superb Mechanical suspension (Not gas shocks),large fuel tank (7 litres), large under seat storage (20 litres),Full Metal Body which has very good durability, Engine centrally positioned for better weight balance, three phase alternator system which provides constant illumination at all times and their awesome engine which has nil vibrations ,silent engine on even high speeds & pickup only you can realise by a TD. Even its 125 cc variant (mine is 125 cc) can attain & hold 90 km/hr with ease.

present versions comes with tubeless tyres & disc brakes. Why I should go gaga over this? Because I own it for the last 4 years.I would say the ownership is trouble free and the ownership cost is on par with its competitors, if not less.

what a similarity between you & me. same as you everything, only the total commute of mine is worser than you, it is 45 km per day.

                    2. Usage: Daily office commutation up & down 30kms with some roads have pot holes & patches.

                    3. Age: 34, Height: 5.6 & Weight: 63

Thank you for very valuable info, yes it looks like I have got some inappropriate information. I found out about the number of dealers after checking their website. And what a coincidence, Saturday evening I went to JMB Motors in Ashok Nagar and TDed VXL 125cc and after coming back home saw your message.

After TDing the vehicle, felt no/less vibes, very stable and lighter compared to others (Activa, Access, ..), impressed with everything like drivability, suspension, body, placement of engine and all.

Basic model comes around 83k plus accessories & others 5k totally = around 90k. Features wise - Drum brake, non-alloy wheels, Analog speedometer & fuel indicator, Tube tyres and comes in White, Yellow, Red and Matte Black colors.

VXL 125 comes around 95k plus accessories & others, whereas which comes with Disc break, Alloy wheels, Digital Speedometer, Broader tubeless tyres - Front 110-70/11, Rear - 120-70/10 and with some more color options.

After TDing Vespa tempted to go for it and also getting tempted to go for the second variant - VXL 125, but the price of which is too much, with the price I can go for Avenger 220 Cruise. Now I have ended up in total confusion.

Confusion- One of the joys in the process of buying an automobile or any other purchase that's close to heart I must say. It's always a tug of war between heart and the mind ain't it ? and I'm going to add fuel to that fire, On the lines of Vespa, did you get a chance to TD Aprilia SR150 when you visited JMB? That might prove cheaper and more fun to ride. You may also include Suzuki Access to the list of scooters.

                        Cheers!

Haha yes, confusion is one of the joys, good that ends up in buying the good vehicle. Actually, I was planning to TD Aprilia SR 150, but I ain't since I already have neck pain and also if it is scooter family members may use it, so the sales guy told not to go for Aprilia. And yes I have already TD Suzuki Access and I liked it and felt better than Honda Activa & TVS Jupiter also the Access Special edition looks cool, comes in White Color, Chrome fittings for the mirror, brown color inner leg shield, chrome head lamp, retro maroon seat and few more. I was in the mindset to go for this or Unicorn or Avenger.

Yes read your review earlier, very good review. I liked Access was thinking to go for it.

On 30th after getting to know about offers on BSIII vehicles started enquiring about offers on Vespa basic model LX 125, they told 5k for 2017 model and 10k for 2016 model and no credit card surcharge. I enquired other showrooms also but the first one was better so I went for it and paid full amount on Thursday - card payment, they gave 12.5 k discount final amount came around 75k. So went for it...[emoji4]
