Hello people, been a lurker here for a long time, need suggestion for a bike. First lets get the basics out fo the way.

    1. Budget-1L
    2. Age- 24
    3. Height- 5'11"
    4. Weight: 95
    5. Intended usage- Daily usage in the city
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - Not anything specific but a good mileage would be nice
    7. City & Highway percentage usage- 80% city 20% city expressway
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running
    9. City / Town /Village of residence - Mumbai
    10. Brand / Bike type preference - None

I have been an owner of a 2007 Hero Honda Xtreme. The bike served me well but lately was showing its age with little niggles here and there so i decided it was a good opportunity to sell the bike and buy an upgrade. The main reason for the upgrade i would say is that my bike was starting to get boring in terms of riding. A few years ago i had the chance to ride my friends Duke 200 and that is what blew my head off. I had no idea that bikes could be this much fun to ride. The acceleration blew my mind off and i was addicted. Unfortunately I did not have the money then to buy a new bike but I had the desire to buy a performance bike. Now I have saved up enough i want to buy one.
I obviously wanted to buy a Duke 200 since that was the bike that stole my heart away, unfortunately I have a budget of 1L and the duke is way way over budget. So what I basically want is the performance of a duke in my price budget.

I have thought up of a few bikes.

    1) Pulsar 200 ns- From all the reading i have done this is the closest bike that can come to the performance of duke on a budget. It looks so very good with an almost similar acceleration. Though there are a few doubts i have over it like the infamous bajaj quality, is it worth investing in bajaj if i want the bike to last me for some time like 5years+ Another point is that this bike has been on the road for s very long without much mechanical changes. Is it still advisable to go for such an old bike.

2)TVS RTR 200 - This is another close contender that i am considering. From the reviews i have read this has quate amazing performance too including a good acceleration. Though to be completely honest i don't like how it looks. Also i have absolutely no idea about quality of TVS bikes? how are they? are the better or worse than bajaj. All i know is Apache usually vibrate a lot.

    3) Honda Hornet- In terms of looks there is one word, wow. I have never seen a honda look this good. The muscular tank, the fat tires have won me over. And the super smooth honda engine. But then it is only 160cc I am not sure it can match to the performance of either the apache or the pulsar. Plus I am guessing like other honda it is very linear. Though i am tempted by the rock solid reliability of a honda.

So what do you guys suggest? You may add another bike if you think so.

Thank you so much for reading.

I would suggest the p200 NS. It's not as fun as a Duke 200, I'm made to believe, but it does a good 140+ kmph with ease. Plus point : 2/3 guys have done 1lakh+ kms on the NS, and they don't seem to have many problems.

The hornet simply won't give you that thrill.

Even my thinking is like this too. The Hornet I feel won't come close to the performance of Duke 200 that I am trying to replicate especially that insane acceleration. It brings a smile to my face when I think about it.

What is scaring me if the Bajaj tag. My father simply refuses to believe that a Bajaj can be reliable too. He is a throughbred Honda fan with their rock solid engine and reliability. But you mentioning that people have done 1lakh plus kms on it without major issues does give me more confidence.

          Hi brother,

The Hondas are indeed engineering masterpieces and very reliable, but in your case the Hornet is just not in the same league as the NS and the RTR. At best, Hornet is a power commute, while the other 2 are performance street bikes. So going for Honda would not be wise.

Coming to Bajaj, it is true that you will not get the smoothness, and robustness of a Japanese bike in an Indian one (Be it Ns or the RTR), but Bajaj has been constantly improving and getting better and we must surely give them credit for that. One more reason for a few niggles is the competitive price, Bajaj is just plain cheap when compared to Hondas and Yamahas. So that cheap price, or shall we say value for money is gonna come at a certain cost (That being, not so smooth engine, little vibrating parts here and there etc etc). So all in all Bajaj provides you the best package for your money, in turn you will have to accept that they are not Japanese. The NS is a very good bike and will serve you well for long time. If you like it, go for it.

The RTR is on the same boat as the NS, the previous versions were famous for the vibrations and harshness, but the owners of the new RTR200 have a lot of good things to say about it. The vibrations are said to be minimal (Can't vouch as, I did not get a chance to ride one yet). Read the ownership reviews thread to get clear picture and then decide.

Finally, take test rides back to back of all the short listed bikes and then choose the one that you feel most connected to.
All the best for bike hunting.
          Ride safe.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

                  Hi buddy,

Highlighted the part which really seems to be a gross misunderstanding amongst many individuals. I really dont understand at which point this rumour was started but I have observed my friends on 5 year old Pulsar 180s completely satisfied with their bikes. All it needs is regular servicing and a bit of compassion. I have personally ridden the NS over 3.5 years and was never left wanting for reliability or for that matter spare parts. Please let go of this ideology that cheap necessary means unreliable. Im sure people will fill your heads with lots of stories but take it from someone who has the experience of horribly unreliable bikes, Bajaj has its ducks in a row when it comes to reliability and "sustained performance".

In terms of your requirement, I think with your height the NS will suit you, however the RTR is faster in the bottom end acceleration. It also sounds better IMO and the matt colours totally give it that stealth look. Test ride and decide. At your budget you cant go wrong with either. If you do go for the RTR try to get the Pirelli tyres option. Since you seem to have acceleration in your mind, the extra grip of the Pirellis will be a boon for you.

I think it probably stems from the fact that the older pulsars are usually in horrible condition after a few years. Compared to that the hero hondas of those days have aged so much better including my xtreme compare to the old pulasrs in my building which are in tatters now. But its so good to hear now that those issues have been sorted now and that bajaj bikes are just as reliable.

Now between the rtr 200 and the pulsar what would you suggest?

I went to both the showrooms, bajaj and TVS. Unfortunately both refused to give me a test ride saying that they dont have any test bike avaliable and that the apache and ns is selling off as soon as they receive it. So was pretty disappointed on that end since i did not get a chance to ride them.
Though i sat on both of them for a while to get a fell and both the bikes felt light so that's a plus.
Also i have noticed that they had a bit rear set foot-pegs compared to my xtreme, so it felt different. Is this something i will get used to? Though the sitting position felt quite upright.

So being a bit confused between both the bikes.

                      Hi,

Unfortunately the showrooms in my city do not keep the RTR for test ride either. They are quite primitive and even in case of the older RTRs they had to get the test ride vehicle from another city! Cant comment on the ride for that. From what I have seen and experienced though, for a tall person the NS is a better looking canvas. Its a tall bike and tall people look good on it. I love the glossy paint on the new NS too, however they should have launched the matt shades like Apache as well.

Also if you are considering Apache, do wait a while, they should launch the ABS version this year (hopefully). Saw a matt grey one zoom past my car recently and its looked wicked good.

Out of the two I would suggest the NS, the sheer number of Bajaj bikes on road ensures you the availability of spare parts several years down the line. The country wide service network is a boon if you plan to tour, you can find a Bajaj service center in the smallest of towns.

This surfaces quite a lot. Maybe cuz Bajaj bikes are always vfm. A lot of people get them and a very few maintain them. Now you know what happens next. Lack of maintenance leads to issues then this lot will start crying about xyz issues. If you take care of your Bajaj it'll never let you down. Quality may not be the best. Don't confuse that with reliability. You get what you pay for in terms of quality without compromising reliability.

If the bike is available it shouldn't take that long. 1 week tops if the bike is in stock. If your showroom doesn't have it in stock try a different one.
