  • Suggestions for my first as well as last buy

    Hi guys,

I've been watching the xbhp forums for a while now and it's wonderful, looking at how helpful fellow riders are.
Coming to my query, I'm planning to buy a bike this month. So sharing my info below:

    1. Budget: Max. 170k
    2. Age: 25
    3. Height: 6'1
    4. Weight: 70kgs
    5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.): Daily office commute of overall 10-12kms, occasional weekend recreation
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any): >30-35
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: 70 city/ 30 Highway
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running ~500kms monthly (may reach 700kms occasionally, not more than that)
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing): West Hyderabad
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any): >150cc, Powerful, Easy handling, Minimal running around for maintenance. And no fairing.

As for a history, I've ridden Kinetic Nova (6yrs), my dad's Splendor (10yrs) so far, while occasional rides on friends' Pulsar 150, FZ-S (felt heavy on riding).

I'm not a biker. Didn't like riding a 2 wheeler until a Goa tour, couple of months ago where I scaled South Goa to North Goa daily (~100kms) for 4 days on an Activa. It's not the machine but the experience that fascinates me now.

Planning to a buy a new bike now. TD Gixxer, hornet and Duke 200 so far. Gixxer's handling seemed effortless, Hornet felt heavy while riding (also gave me a pain in the wrist), Duke's handling was also effortless like gixxer's (+ve had responsive throttle and looks good to me; -ve fwd leaning posture is uncomfortable for me). Will TD NS200 (although I hate pulsar for its similar looking models, only minimal changes in fairing etc) and any other suggested bikes.

I'm not much aware of bikes, just want an intelligent machine which can take care of it's own most of the time (less efforts on maintenance).

As for my riding style, at max I'll hover around 60 - 70 kmph in city with no traffic, only make 100kmph max on a highway. (A cautious rider)

I'm inclined towards Duke now, coz my brother already bought a Gixxer's SF last month.

Thank you for your patience so far.

I need your suggestions on my first buy (gonna be my last buy).

    Query Approved

My suggestion would be the Gixxer
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      DUKE is a Good Option.
You Can also consider FZ25. It looks Good, Have power, good on milage.

Thanks. It's just that there's already a gixxer sf (brother's) in the family, so I'm thinking of getting a different bike.

If you're revv happy then go for Duke, else I'd suggest Fz25 - a no-nonsense bike for every day commute and occasional touring.

It's just that I'm sceptical on Yamaha's long term performance. I've come to know from my friends owning Yamaha that it takes more service centre visits after 3-4 yrs. Is it the case?

It depends on how you treat your bike
If you maintain it well then it will be fine...But If you Ride the bike like squids and dont maintain the bike then you know it's going to be bad.

Based on your lifestyle you want a subtle bike. I can give 2 suggestions: GSX150 (gixxer) and FZ25 (both naked versions not the faired). You mentioned your brother bought an SF. Thats ok, you can get a Naked GSX150. You want an intelligent machine which takes care of itself, you cant go wrong with the 2 Japs I mentioned.

However since this is going to be your only Bike, I would go with a bit of future proofing on the displacement i.e, FZ25. Now I am not siding towards Duke200 because given your age (which is the same as mine), as time passes you probably will start disliking it. Its a good bike for the youth but for you and me, we would prefer a more calm and tamed bike.

Re: Suggestions for my first as well as last buy

Disclaimer: A very diplomatic answer coming up.

First and last. Sounds like you want a Honda. :P I would recommend the CBR250R(at the risk of "it's outdated, boring and screw Honda for not updating it" comments) or the CBR150R. You want an all rounder and both these bikes are as good as anything else with the ability to carry on the duties with a lot of abuse thrown at them. My 2010 CB twister still runs perfectly after 7 years. Need I say more?

Next recommendation is to look at the Yammies. If a committed stance doesn't appeal to you, I'd suggest the FZ25 and the Fazer250(going to be released around the corner), although both being new bikes, I won't be putting my money on them yet. The R15 and the R15s are amazing bikes, however. I've seen loads of folks using these bikes as daily drivers, tourers and weekend steeds. At your(our) age, that should be manageable. But the age factor means the R15 won't be your last bike.

The Dominar 400 seems to be garnering a lot of mixed reviews and I can understand why. I frankly, I loved the bike. But then again, I loved the RTR180 ABS too, and it was a good bike but poor service broke that relationship up. I've heard of Bajaj's legendary failure at producing quality products and I've seen evidence of it too. But there's just as much evidence to prove that Bajaj makes quality bikes. I loved the quality that literally reeked from the Dominar. Seemed like a forever bike.

Since you already have a Gixxer SF in your stable, get it's naked brother(sounded weird, I know) maybe?

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the 200NS just yet. IMO that's the best bike to leave the Bajaj plants since the P220 - which is another classic you can't go wrong with.

All in all, just like many here have iterated, your requirements sort of describe every bike in the Indian market and your given budget. Go test ride as many bikes as you please, and do it unabashedly. Get the one you're most comfortable with and maintain it properly, it'll last you long. Looking back, I know now that all I had to do to save my relationship with my old RTR was to chuck warranty worries and take it to the best mech in town. I didn't and the bike went wrong.
Don't matter what it is: Touring; Racing; Commuting. All I know is, I belong on the saddle.

                  Rides : Honda CB Twister(Feb 2011 - Present) | TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS(Sept 2012 - May 2016) | Honda CBR250R C-ABS Repsol(March 2017 - Present)

Re: Suggestions for my first as well as last buy

Thank you all for your help. I test rode the suggestions. Fz25, and dominar seemed a bit heavy (like hornet) while riding. All in all, for me it came down to Gixxer vs D200. Now, D200 is an incredible bike w/o a doubt, but my riding style might not take its full advantage. Also my mom vetoed Gixxer for the pillion seat. So now I have a Gixxer SP standing in my parking.
