  • What Bike...A Tourer in Budget.

First of all thanks to mods for approving my membership.

Riding a bike since my early college days, for my daily needs. But this has been stopped since last 15 years & so. Relocation for job and up-gradation to a car for commuting. In younger days whenever I was seeing any sports bike or a macho bike like Royal enfield I was awe struck with their beauty & power. But had no money to buy one or access to them. Whatever we had in family was a Chetak / Vespa / Rx 100 / CD 100 / which later graduated into a Splendour / Calibre Avenger & Enticer.

Cut to present time, my love for a power full bike again re ignited, thanks to buying a Jupiter for my better half. Now in my early 40 the rush to ride a power machine on a long tour is getting bigger & bigger. Now I have money Alhamdulillah, but not much time due to work schedule. Still I have started searching for a bike which I can take on a longer tour pillion riding my 13 years old son or my 15 years daughter or even my better half.

I was looking for a bike with ABS, but my bad luck that not a single bike below 2 lac is having ABS in them in India.

I thought of Royal Enfield first, but younger days have memory of rusting body, plus leg burn by silencer. Hence, hesitated to go for one. Even Himalayan is not attracting me much.

Then decided about my lost love, Avenger. I find it more suitable for my need then anything else. But am not sure about it's performance. I was thinking of Avenger 220 Street or cruiser...but suddenly I found about

Pulsar RS 200 with ABS...even though it has ABS in front wheel and costlier then an Avenger it was more than enough for me to get attracted towards it. Plus, it's awesome user review & riding conditions for long rides.

Just when I was putting my heart on it from no where came Apache RTR 180 with ABS. And it was like nail in the coffin. All the power, ABS, good riding condition even good user base. just a minor problem Vibration above 100 kmph. But I am not concern about that much, as I am not a power rider.

Now xbhpian need your advise. Keep in mind that it will be once or twice a year tour. rest it will be lying mostly unused or a trip of 100-200 km in 2 months max. Buying a tourer bike is again have a hidden agenda to teach my kids why bikes, enjoyment of riding a bike & how to love your bike.

I am making my budget 1 - 1.5 lac only.

What you suggest even a year old bike can do

    my choices are as below
    1. RTR 180 ABS (is vibration is too much a downer?)

    2. Avenger 220 (without ABS will that be a good bike on long tours)

    3. Pulsar 200 RS ABS

    4. RE (anything under 1.5 lac) / Duke 200 / R15

    Query Approved

If you have checked out the Apache 180, why not the 200?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Liquid cooling would be an added advantage for long rides.. Have you thought about the AS200? It is a good bike and it would make a perfect long tourer's bike.. It has projectors, it has liquid cooling and it makes good amount of power.. apart from that, it looks good.. only drawback would be the missing ABS.. It would be a better choice over the avenger if you ask me..

Now, coming to the RTR180 ABS. Why I won't go for it is, the ergonomics matter a lot when it comes to touring.

      1. The seat cushion is hard making it uncomfortable to sit long.
      2. The Sitting posture is kind of sporty
      3. It doesn't have liquid cooling
      4. Vibrations could possibly make you tired on the long rides.

One more reason to why I would go for the AS200 is, the remaining money can be spent on getting good gears for yourself, kids and your better half after-all, safety is priority. Right?

P.S. The RS200 is a good bike.. No doubt.. But take a test ride of the bikes you have in mind, with your better half seated behind you. At the end, their comfort is as important as yours

Thanks for suggestion. I never thought on that line. even though I know liquid cooling is an added advantage. Also, I noticed that anything below 200cc is air cooled only in India. So I have to go 200 or above.

Regarding AS 200 (I hope you mean Pulsar As 200), I was thinking about it but lack of ABS made it out of the list. Then I found not much difference in RS 200 & AS 200. correct me if I am wrong
        @The Monk
I thought about RTR 200, but was not able to find the ABS model. And secondly the pillion seat is also the deal breaker.

Reason to zeroing on RTR 180 was ABS + Pillion Seat

but now I need to restart my search.

can anyone tell me the difference between Avenger 220 Street & Cruiser (for me it's just the cosmetic)

        Also difference between RS 200 / AS 200 / NS 200

Meantime sooner I will be buying a Honda Navi, just for having some fun. (Kid in me still kicking )

Actually, the RS200 is FI while AS/NS200 are Carb'd.. Which means, RS200 will have better throttle response and better FE. When I say better FE, probably by 5kmpl at max.. Also, the RS makes odd 1bhp more than the AS200..

Correction. We have R15 and CBR150R which are below 200cc and come with liquid cooling system..

AS again has an advantage over RS against crosswinds thanks to its half fairing.. And head on wind thanks to its visor...

Regarding the Avenger, just cosmetic changes...

Just give Mahindra Mojo a test ride.. impressive bike.. But out of ur budget by few grands.. You might like it though. As you are going to use it for touring purposes

You should give a try to CBR 250R. You can good pretty decent used ones under 1.5 lacs. It also has ABS option. Its an aweome tourer, very reliable, comfortable, spares are easily available too.

Re: What Bike...A Tourer in Budget.

Since you have mentioned that you are not a power rider, and then you are concerned about good braking - Honda Hornet must fulfill these needs. It has sufficient torque and power figures, has CBS, has a decent pillion seat. It would make a pretty decent occasional tourer.

But if you would like to go at higher speeds, then AS200 or 220F would be a good choice. Both these brothers have their share of +ves and -ves.
RS200 indeed would be a better choice than these two.

RTR 180 in my opinion, is a street bike. Its small and its fun in the city not much on the highways. Well, one can say the same about the Duke as well, but that doesn't stop anyone from touring on it.
It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

If touring is your priority then take a look at Mahindra mojo. If you can stretch your budget a bit, mojo is a good option.

first many thanks to rreneav1987, Brezon95, Sal, ride with Tapan. whew!!.. few more choices. This is the benefit of a place like xBhp. I do looked at Mojo, but the price is too high, and Indian Mentality if I have to spend that much why not buy a Honda CBR 250. I do have seen a lot of CBR under 1 lac, even with ABS a 2013 model. But I don't find much confidence in buying a bike whose resale value is going so down so fast. is there a problem with CBR250? How good is CBS against ABS. I know it cant give the same advantage but does it have some advantage or not? I thought Bajaj after launching all those RS/AS/NS stopped 220F, but it seems it's still in production. Hornet was considered but left out due to same reason no ABS...and now no liquid cooled engine. can a 150cc bike be used as a tourer, like CBR 150R (can buy the new one as my son was having a crush on DHOOM bikes) or R15? if 150R can be used as a Tourer or CBR 250R used ones are good buys then I will go with it. Or else Avenger 220 (my heart still beating for it) / 220F / AS 200 / RS 200 ( let me know only one better amongst these or anything else better than these)

If you get used RE under 1.5 lack. Please go for it. It is very good for touring.

But better you go for a new one.
                    1. SUZUKI GS150R. Which is especially made for touring with 150cc engine and 6 Speed, Big Fuel Tank, Heavy & Solid Build.
                    2. Yamaha Fazer

If you buy any bike, please ride at least once in a week. Otherwise the bike start to rust sitting in a single place. Engine oil start to sediment. Any motors should be in running to keep it in a good condition.

Please let us know about your budget and what kind of vehicle you like and which are the bikes in your mind, then someone will give suggestions.
For a totally different bikes, you need to custom build a bike. I suggest Verdenchi which builds awesome custom bikes.

Actually am a NRI. So mostly out of country. Whatever I ll buy will be lying idle, unless until my brothers start using it (which is more likely so). I said I will go on touring once or twice a year & bike will be lying idle at home. If it runs in my absent, it will run only for 100-200 kms max in 2 months. Coz my brothers will use it only for their walking distances commuting. Any longer drives are taken in our cars.

I won't be giving the bikes in my son or daughters hand unless they are of legal age. Anyway both know how to ride a scooter . So mostly bike wont be used much in my absence.

SUZUKI GS150R lacks rear disc brakes as well as ABS.

I am still waiting for CBS vs ABS reply. May be someone who used a CBS bike can give a more one hand experience.

Also, I can stretch my budget to anything near 2 lac, but in my opinion it will be just waste.

                            Dear xBhpian

I have created the poll of my final 4. Whichever bike wins the Poll it will be in my Stable. Unless until my love for Avenger not allowing me to do so (I am sorry in advance for that).

I have learned one thing any bike as far as it's a bike can do the job and when a Star City can travel to Bangkok, why the others won't do the job. Every one has his/her own opinion and this way the conservation will keep on going.

So here just vote from your Heart + Brain (my budget will be 1 lac only unless until it's a CBR 150R new)

                            Thank you all.

Well I was looking for a bike a few weeks ago.. I initially wanted was looking for a city bike/tourer. I was looking at the 220f , tvs 180 ,tvs 200 , as 200.
I ended up with the as 200. Do not regret my choice one bit. Well atleast not yet. Iv had it for about 25 days odd and 1700km.
