  • Help me choose between pulsar ns 2017 200 , as 200 and hornet 160

Hi I am 5'10" 28 year old 80 kg guy from Nepal. I have a hero honda hunk 2008 model with 100000+ kms on odo. Now I am loosing hope for it as it has a problem in cone(chasis element) and the fuel economy is not justified too....been getting 28 -30 from day one hahaha. So looking for a small upgrade in power as I travel lots of uphill with a pillion too.
Previous generation bajaj was not just my cup of tea. But man these new AS and NS got me impressed . So was hoping to get honest suggestions.
    Requirements
    - very comfortable in Twisties ....most of our highways are in mountains and most kms on the odometer would be in mountains doing 70-110 kmph
-ability to cruise at 100-110 kmph
-good pulling power to pull around 150 kg....me and a pillion
    -fuel economy of 30-35+ atleast
-bit of on and bit of off roads....sometimes bad condition roads with climbs
-want to keep it atleast for 100000 kms....im willing to fiddle here and there for maintainance ( learned to adjust tappets from xbhp back then as none here in Kathmandu did it to my satisfaction)

    My shortlist:
    Pulsar NS 2017 200
    Pulsar AS 200
    Honda hornet 160

I love NS and is priced at Nrs292000
AS priced bit low at Nrs 287000 and hornet is Nrs 265000.
Now my question is how is the faring in AS?
I am in dilemma because AS has better headlamps I guess but fear the rattles and thuds from the fairing on our 19th century roads with poor conditions...and is cheaper than NS.
I loved hornet....but the power and 6th gear got me bit tilted towards the pulsars as I find the refinement of new gen pulsars satisfactory beside that loud gear thud while shifting.
Also hornet is in the option incase pulsars are bad for Twisties . Was satisfied then by diamond frame of hunk as opposed to the one in old gen pulsars......in the Twisties couldn't have the confidence I had with hunk..if I had old gen pulsars . How good is the steel pressed perimeter frame of the NS and AS? Is it true that NS has a bit more of torque in the lower power band then AS? Torque in lower rpm band would really help me in Nepali road conditions .

Thanks and hoping for nice assurances

    Query Approved

The AS has stop being sold in India and we are told that production has stopped, so how come they are selling it in Nepal? Old Stock! Check it out. The NS will be new because production started in January this year only.

If you can afford the NS200, then go for it. The Hornet really cannot be compared.

Yes, the NS is a much better handling machine as compared to the previous generation Pulsars. The RS200 is the best handling Pulsar till date.

Regarding the headlamp, you best checkout on the ownership thread for the best lighting setup for the bike.

    Cheers and all the best!!

Thanks for approval. Okay I see they have AS in stock....maybe old stock....so AS is out of question. I thought of RS200 but here it costs whopping NRS400000. So I guess it's not justified....for same reason I'm not waiting for the ABS version of NS (read it will be mandatory in India after 2018) as price sure would be NRS 350000+ . I think I'll go with NS.

Pulsar NS200 has a perimeter frame which handles twisties very well. The suspension set up is also quite nice on NS200. Overall it's a great buy and has more power and torque than Hornet.

Thanks neeraj for your suggestion. I too think NS to be more VFM then hornet.

Ok sorry but here is a bit of change of events.....
Now fz25 is launched with price of Nrs 350000. Since NS is Nrs 290000. Now I'm having a lot of doubts....is 60k worth it for fz25...since I'll get a FI , and lot of low end torque....also the electronic diagnosis system Yamaha showed is very tempting, specially in Nepal where service is equally bad as roads. Also from my research it seems NS is not fuel efficient as FZ25 .is it true? Now in huge dilemma. Please help me sort out .

The fuel efficiency of both bikes would be similar. With non-aggressive riding, a little under 40 kmpl.

I don't know the scene in Nepal, is the quality of fuel available there good? Because Fi units struggle and die with regular bad fuel. Carbs manage to sputter and keep going without too much trouble.

Thanks monk. Fuel is not top notch.. I guess the fuel is old (I read somewhere that petrol degrades after 3 months or so). From India refinery to Nepal via Twisties and to the storage and then to the pumps.no different octane and all....but r15/ dukes/ fzfi all doing good...so maybe not that bad too.
And the fi cleaning tools and all that Yamaha showed is inspiring. If my fi gets cleaned by a push of a button in the service center it will be awesome.
Also I heard in altitude FI is good...and Kathmandu is 1400 m above sea.
Too much questions arose due to launch of fz25.
Btw I never liked the fz16 as it struggled to overtake in the climbing Twisties almost Everytime.
Help me ride past is guys.

1400m isn't much altitude at all! Bajaj bikes do not normally struggle at altitude. The NS200 though has reports of struggling when you hit 3500+ metres odd.

If the R15 and Dukes do well, then the FZ25 shouldn't be a problem either. Recently a couple of friends from xBhp took two FZ25s to Spiti and seemed to be quite happy with it crossing 4590m in the bargain.

What is the cost of the D200 in Nepal. If that isn't too expensive, then i would suggest that Lovely bike, awesome at altitude and handles like a dream.

I wanted to get Duke 250 but at Nrs 535000 it's way too much....haha can have 2 NS. Duke 200 is Nrs 435000. I think way too much for the things it offers....no vfm I guess. What you think ?

Yup. The D200 price does seem a bit much compared to the FZ25 and NS200. The 25 should probably give you the best bang for the buck.

Hi again Manjish. If you are going for FZ25, do take a night test ride because from my personal experience the LEDs are not at all good. I have Dominar and the difference between illumination of both the bikes was too much. Both of them have white LEDs; Dominar's are super impressive and FZ's are below average.

Yeah...i guess it has only 3 or 4 LED clusters.

FZ 25 headlights can be adjusted quite easily. I'm quite happy with them post adjustment. The factory setup is terrible though.
