My itch for a bigger bike
Hey guys my name is raghav, I'm about 26, I been riding for almost 10years, started on a Honda unicorn which served me fantastically well till I upgraded to a cbr 250r in 2014 and its still riding well. I have experienced a few big bikes, a ninja 650 with a full scorpion which blew me away, as it was my first experience on a 600, then rode the benelli 600i which was nice but not too impressive, also a short ride on the cbr650f which was good but I need a longer td, my closest to a Superbike was riding a 2014 Ducati 899, which was good as well, Gave Me a glimpse of riding the bike in real life conditions then came to the conclusion that bike is meant purely for the track. Coming to my options, my heart says Fz09, why? Cause something about that bike makes me want to get it but it seems the most expensive option and it being CBU and cost of spares would make it a extremely costly ownership but I'm willing to take a leap of faith. My 2nd consideration is the street triple S, R and RS(not released). I am keeping this as a 2nd option but I'm more going towards the mid R model as it's a perfect blend of road and track. It's moderately priced and would make it pretty decent to tour on as well. My final option is the cbr650f which is the least expensive of the 3 but I want to go for a naked but coming from Honda, I'd fit in with the bike like a glove but I want to go for a naked. Why not kawasaki or benelli? Well I'm not a big fan if the benelli and service of kawasaki has become pathetic According to a Kawa owner friend who rides a z800 here in Chennai where I am from. Well simply I don't like the z800/900. The Fz/Mt09 is the most rarest bike in this category in the country and something about that engine makes me want it soo bad and the new 2017 model was updated and all older issues like snatchy throttle and dodgy front forks were resolved but the unknown price and lack ownership is the Block here as for triumph I'm waiting for the R to launch, I'm not considering RS cause it's got way too much of electronics, similarly S is a bit simple but I'm still taking it into consideration. Finally the cbr650f is the least expensive and already read some positive ownership experiences from a fair few plus the updated 2017 model looks a bit sharper and marginally powerful makes it a good buy, but it's my 3rd option. I'd like any valuable information or input on these options.

Ok guys I'm ruling out the MT 09, it's way too pricey, was quoted 14-15 lakhs, for 5 more lakhs I can pick up a gsxr 1000, the street triple S is at 10 the R model is expected to be around 12, my other option is the cbr650f which is 8.25.

Best to spend on a new KTM390 and save major dough and all the possible ownership hassles of service etc that you have mentioned in your posts-except the bragging rights of owning a superbike,the Katoom does everything nearly as well.

If I were to choose a bigger bike, upgrading from a CBR250R too, I'd go with the Triumph Street Triple. Am I wrong? 1. I'm fed up with the fairing on the CBR. It makes it too difficult to do some DIY. Thus, a naked would be, in my opinion, better. Better traffic maneuverability.
2. Usable power, low end torque, and usable power band. I'll be using my next bike for commuting too, just as I do on my CBR250 and you don't need the power up in the revs. I'll be needing lower end and mid range power.
3. 3 Cylinder exhaust note <3
4. Ease of SVC availability, maintenance costs, etc.
5. Decent mileage, w.r.t. superbikes' normal mileage.
6. I love the bugger looks.
7. Riding posture.
P.S. All of the above is my opinion. May vary from people to people.:D

I am heavily considering the street triple, Z900 is my 2nd option, and yes I feel the same way, thought I'll go a naked instead if the a bike with a fairing. There is a truimph tiger test ride model done about 30000kms for 6-7 lakhs, if it's in decent condition, I wonder if it's worth it. I don't think a Street Triple with 30k kms is worth that much. It's a used tiger from the truimph showroom itself not a street triple I'm only looking for the new, no chance someone would buy it n sell it off like that, the new 765 S it's price around 10.16 on road, the Z900 at 8.75 but kawasaki sales n service has been terrible in Chennai I've heard. I will mostly agree. Triumph Street Triple is the most practical among 600-800 cc segment. It is surely on a bit pricier side but it is worth. But Street R may not get launched here and Triumph is launching RS version on 3rd October. Kawasaki Z900 is also excellent option and many reviewers are actually preferring it over Street S 765. But service is rather iffy. Need to check how it is now.
You are welcome to check my thread title starting with "Red Rose". New street retains all that was good in previous street but adds many goodies so it is indeed worth the price raise over previous version. The only very slight negative I felt was
a) Split seat instead of single long seat - pillion riding is less practical now
b) Ride by wire feels a bit weird at least for first few days - there is very slight lag if you suddenly wring the throttle for quick acceleration
But these are relatively very minor niggles and any other bike in this class will be less comfortable than Street and more so for pillion rider.
Anyway few people will really use such bikes a lot with pillion - it will almost always be used single seat and pillion would be exceptional situation only I guess.

By the way, I have not checked bikes like Aprilia Shiver 900 and MV Agusta Brutale 800. Italian beauties are great but long term ownership might prove tearful unless you have ample budget and patience for it. Especially MV Brutale 800 is very charming bike and you just can't take your eyes off it..
CBR650F personally I would not recommend. There is nothing against it as such but there is that zing-thing missing in this bike...IT somehow doesn't feel special and hence one would not love putting 8-9 lakhs into such a bike....Also Honda service is nothing great at least in Pune. This is a very subjective matter and I don't claim that I am correct and owners of CBR who love it are wrong.Last edited by jeevan.chaukar; 09-24-2017, 08:32 PM.

Apparently the bug eyed look of the street triple has gone, they've softened the headlights a bit so it looks like 2 omlettes instead. Also we have to hear from new owners if triumph fixed the stalling issue.
The CBR 650f saves you almost 2L compared to the Striple. The most sensible choice out of the three, I would gladly pick it. Also it's the least good-looking out of the three bikes you shortlisted. That makes it even better from a touring stand point. The added 40kg weight over the Striple would make one feel it's a heavier, sturdier bike.Last edited by leech; 09-25-2017, 01:46 PM.

True, Honda seems more vfm at least when it comes to real time top end performance, the striple I guess gives a more excitement factor, honestly I was edging towards the MT which is a naked but got overpriced and phased out due to yamahas disinterest in the big and mid segment bike market soo makes no sense, I honestly would prefer a naked, but I'm keeping my options open, cbr650f is a outside bet, but if budget and other things permit , i think I switch my Honda allegiance.Originally posted by leech View PostApparently the bug eyed look of the street triple has gone, they've softened the headlights a bit so it looks like 2 omlettes instead. CBR 650F is 40 kg heavier? It is 215 kg against 188 kg of Street Triple (675cc). Z800 was much heavier around 231-232 kg. Bug eyed look is changed only to some extent and new street triple is still distinctive looking.
As for stalling, it has happened to a lot of Street Triples but not to all. Mine is an example where it has not happened yet. I have done 15600 km so far and about 2 years. There are more people like me as well who haven't faced stalling in last 1-2 years after purchase. At the same time many are there who faced it very frequently and some even ditched Street Triple in favour of other bikes.
The difference is that I have got the air-filter replacement OR cleaning + throttle body cleaning done once in 6 months (through free service camps that Triumph provides 1-2 times every year), regular service once in every 11 months, oil change once every 11 months and no stalling or any other performance issues seen.
I have seen symptoms of stalling 1-2 times (idle RPM drops below 1000) but not since last 8-10 months and it never stalled. So, the theory given by Triumph that Street is a relatively frequently used bike exposing it to dust which causes issues to throttle bodies and stepper motor might be valid. As I haven't actually faced it, I am unable to confirm anything.
Overall, Street remains quite the all-rounder. Daily commute, weekend fun and even reasonable distance touring (as long as solo) - all it can handle (but not very rough or broken roads - not meant for those).
