  • Searching for suitable upgrade from my 125 cc office commuter

    Hi friends,

After 10 years of using (and abusing) my Bajaj XCD 125, I finally have decided to replace my bike.

    The History
I got by XCD back in college days, when budget was a constraint, an LCD display in a bike for 50k was a novelty , and Twin Spark with Swirl Induction was the peak of innovation, and the Bajaj Pulsar 180 was the most powerful bike on the market (RE excluded). Had a relatively decent experience with the XCD. Gave minor niggles from time to time, and the service centre was absolutely horrible. But 10 years has taken a toll on the bike. Every commute has become a chore with stiff suspensions, slow throttle response and non functional display.

    The Need
With increase in age, a slow desk job (and waist size), my requirements have changed today. I am looking for a suitable bike which will now be doing the boring job of an office commute of approx 10 Kms each ways, in a safe and comfortable manner, but will hopefully bring a little more spark back into the driving experience. Detailed requirements are as follows:

    1. Budget - 1.5 L OTR
    2. Age - 30 years
    3. Height - 5' 4" (Hence tall bikes are a strict NO)
    4. Weight - 74 Kgs
    5. Intended Use - Mainly Office Commute in peak traffic OR short local trip
    6. Fuel Efficiency - More than 35 would be nice
    7. City Highway - 100% city use
    8. Approximate daily running - 20 Kms
    9. City of Residence - Mumbai
    10. Brand / Bike Preference - Yamaha FZ 25 / Suzuki Gixxer SF FI ABS / TVS Apache RTR 200 (All different capacity bikes. I know I am a confused soul!!)

    The Dilemma
While my personal choice is FZ 25, the lack of ABS is making me lean toward the Gixxer SF. (TVS, I have lost all hope that they will ever get the FI ABS model in)
And before you say that ABS doesn't make a difference, please try braking near the rotten and squishy vegetable filled road of Dadar market, which i have to pass through every day.
The only time i have slipped on my bike is while panic braking over a piece of tomato and lettuce at the same spot. Add a piece of bread and I could have had a sandwich right there to recover from my crash .

So, while mind says Gixxer SF, heart says FZ 25!! And i haven't even explored other options

    Please help me decide

Always go with the heart else every time you ride the bike you may regret your decision or if every time a fz will pass by you, you will regret go with the heart.

I am not sure if I will be of a big help to you! I am really not sure how abs works so I could be wrong

AFAIK! Even abs might not be able to help you in such situations where there is lush of tomatoes squashed be it any fruit!

My suggestion! Learn to control the brakes!!

Why i am saying this? Because! You have the answer to your own dilemma!! Your heart says FZ25 and that is exactly what you should be buying! Moreover! Every cc matters!! At one point of time, you might start banging your head for choosing over what your heart said!

Also, the need for more power might crop into your mind and haunt you down!! LoL!

Always follow your heart...Coming to your requirements you are expecting a bike for city commute and more fuel efficiency(More than 35kmpl) Both the bikes gives more than 35kmpl as per the company's note. Speaking of ABS, It doesn't makes you completely fall proof. It is up to you to control the bike avoid panic breaking. Power wise FZ25 wins clearly.

            Point taken.
My rationale for wanting ABS was also because, an upgrade to the FZ from XCD, means close to double the Torque and a switch from dual drums to dual discs. But like you all said, its just a matter of getting used to it.

So Thanks for your inputs. I have decided to go ahead with the FZ (Subject to Home minister's final approval)

Going to start the haggling process with a couple of dealers in Mumbai this weekend. (Kamla Yamaha and Excellent Yamaha motors.)
On phone they quoted 1.41L without any discount OR freebies . No exchange also available.
Waiting period expected around 20 - 25 days due to post Diwali clearance of units from their stocks. Lets see if I can bring that down.

Let me know in case I need to know anything before signing on the dotted line.

            Regards
            Tiunz

Fz25 is one amazing bike and mostly you could not go wrong with Yamaha. If the ABS thing bothers you back of your mind and if you can wait, wait for some time as Government is going to implement compulsory ABS/CBS rule from April 2018

I primarily use my bike for travelling between October to May. Avoid taking the bike out in the rains. Therefore, if I decide to wait till April, i might as well wait till next October. However, I don't want to continue using the XCD for another year, as it is in the last stages of its life.

May explore if an ABS system can be fitted in the non ABS model, if Yamaha decides to roll it out in the future.
I assume that it would require a change of the disc, the braking lines and installation of ECU system as well - But should be possible at the Service Centres, since the models are same.

                  Agreed with your concern.
My advice to you in future, I would not recommend to retro fit the ABS module .even you get it with authorised service centers they are just road side mechanics with uniforms who are very well known for Make-shift (read JUGAAD) jobs. I would not do it especially with such important aspect like braking and retro fitting is relatively new thing here and these people need some time to understand and get expertise in it.

I'd suggest please test ride both of them, then only you'll know what your heart says, I own a gixxer naked BS 4 version & I love every bit of it, I ride 25 km everyday in Chennai traffic, so take your call only after a test ride, don't rely too much on other's experience
