  • First bike- beginner

    Budget- less than 1 lac
    Age- 21
    Height - 5'7"
Intended usage - college, 12 kms one way
    Fuel efficiency- at least 40
Only city usage as of now
    City- Bangalore
I've just learnt to ride bikes, previously was riding gearless scooter. My choices are
    Gixxer
    Pulsar 160ns
Though I can stretch my budget for the pulsar 200 ns but I don't know whether it will ideal for a beginner like me. Experts please advise

    Topic Approved.

I'm assuming that you know bike riding good enough, even if you're new to geared vehicles...

Both Gixxer and 160NS are good for their segments.
But if you look for more power in your budget (so that you don't get bored in the long term), then you do have some choices...

You can also go for Pulsar 220DTSi, if you're looking for a good long term proven machine, with enough power for touring and commuting alike... Although it feels bulky and not the best handler in front of modern machines, but its acceptable.

Alternatively, you can consider Hero Xtreme 200S, which would be my suggestion for now....

Test ride these machines, don't get a bike without test riding it first.

You shouldn't require a 160cc+ bike for your usage. My suggestion would be to stick to the 150cc class which has some decent offerings in Gixxer, FZ V2.0, Apache and Hornet. These are low on maintenance and high on FE and comfort. Later on, you can move to a much higher capacity bike.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm very much inclined towards Gixxer after I rode the bike recently.

I definitely will do that, but the only major drawback of 160 NS is it's tyres. Rather than the looks I'm concerned about the grip levels due to those tyres.

They are really good I it's mixed rubber not too soft not too hard I didn't face। Any issue yet... People didn't liked this bike only just because of this Reason but I realize bike has potential.. it has better suspension setup than Gixxer and pillion seat on Gixxer is only for some super model not practical,milage-it gives me 43-44 kmpl in mixed city riding ,bumper to bumper traffic

After the test ride of both the bikes, I found to be comfortable with Gixxer and will be booking it shortly. Thanks for the inputs. Also I wanted to ask what should I look for in specific so that I don't get a demo or a test ride vehicle. Experts please help me on this.

Before you finalize, take a test ride of the new Apache RTR 160 4V. I believe it outperforms the Gixxer.

To avoid getting a used bike from the showroom, always insist on selecting a bike when a fresh lot/shipment arrives.

If this is not possible, then look at the tyres for wear or dirt marks. However if the bike is washed this becomes difficult to notice. In such a case, just lie down on the ground and look at the bike from underneath and under the wheel fenders. These are places that dont get washed most of the time.

One technical way is to examine the Chain. From the factory the chain comes greased. If the bike has been used before delivery, the chain will have a lot of dirt particles on it. If the bike is washed, they will either leave the chain or Relube it. If they relube it, you can easily make out the difference between the original grease and chain lube.

Guys, I was about to book the Gixxer but to further add to my confusion apache 160 4v was launched. Now I'm in a greater dilemma cause the apache has better looks ( purely subjective) and better pillion comfort. Can anyone please help me with this!

Gixxer has ABS which Apache 160 don't. I would have gone for Gixxer ABs, only if it was available in my city. Nearest showroom is 60 kms away.

Gixxer SF has ABS, not the naked version. And TVS recently launched Apache 160 4V which has ABS.

TVS is not offering abs on the Apache 160 4V.

                              Hi,

In my opinion, ABS is not required in this segment. One set of Disc Brakes should be sufficient.
As always, Test Drive the vehicle and check out if it skids (due to locking) when sudden breaks are applied.

                              Cheers!
