  • Help me choose bikes within the price bracket of 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh.

    Hello xBhpians,

I am looking forward to buying my first bike with my own salary (will get my joining in the next 2-3 months) in the coming 6 months or so, hence, on a lookout for a bike. As of now, I ride Hero Achiever i3s model.
Let me give a brief about myself and requirements.
I am 5'7" in height and weigh about 70 kgs and have back pain problem (consider this point as well while suggesting).
Most of my riding will be in the city limits (30km/day max) with occasional highway trips/touring, say, once or twice a month.
I am not of the type who loves to rip their bike, I ride defensively with sane speeds and not beyond what I can handle and love to care for it more than I do for myself.

The bikes that I have shortlisted are:

    1. Bajaj Pulsar NS200 ABS: Up till now, this bike has been my focus bike, mainly because of the power-to-price ratio it offers and that dream of owing a Pulsar someday. Highlights: Gives good performance in the city as well as on the highways. Inclusion of 6th gear and ABS has been an icing on the cake, not to forget the wolf-inspired looks.
The downside being the not so refined engine, basic instrument cluster and other quality related issues.

    Then, what happened now?

    I'm splits!
    .
    .
Because of the launch of these two bikes:

    2. TVS Apache RTR 200 4V ABS V2.0: The version 2.0 has got new decals and dual channel ABS and slipper clutch. It has quite refined engine (have ridden one) and has certain pros over NS 200, like the D-C ABS, razor sharp looks, better build quality and comprehensive digital console and that bassy exhaust note!
Downsides: Maybe a bit more power would have been welcome, better front brakes (don't know about how the ABS version performs) and addition of 6th gear for highway cruising.
    Vibrations?
    Which engine hasn't?

    Next comes the Japanese legend.

    3. Yamaha YZF-R15 V3.0: Oh!, how could I not talk about it? Almost everything about the bike is new. Considering this is a fully-faired bike, why this is on my list?
    Two points:
First, it fits within the budget of 1.5 lakhs.
Second, mileage, it has relatively smaller displacement but near about the same power as that of the RTR.
Additionally, it has got everything one could ask for, barring the ABS. VVA, wind protection on the highways, 6th gear, fully comprehensive digital console, trusted platform and the reliability of Yamaha.
The downside? Aggressive seating position and as per reviews: braking. Apart from that, nothing much is known to me about it.

Ah! One more thing. Pillion comfort never goes in vain, just like our education.

    Let your wisdom pour in!

    Thanks.

Why you skip FZ25 and Fazer 25?? For backpain its better na?

In the above 3 i prefer Apache RTR 200 4V version 2.0 with ABS. Its more practical. The price is reasonable. Slipper clutch and ABS features. Maintenance cost is low as compared to others (not much idea abt NS). And offers decent mileage.

        I was thinking about it.
Fazer 25? Not even in my dreams. Looks ugly to me. :/

FZ25 seems like a sensible addition here, similar power to the RTR but more torque, that too at a lower rpm. It looks bulbous to me and the headlight and console aren't that great either. Additionally, it costs more and doesn't offer ABS, even as an option.

I have ridden the 200NS and the RTR. I read the NS200 ownership thread and trust me it doesn't give much confidence to go ahead with it, citing the trouble owners are facing with the 2017 edition.
I don't want to go for it and then lose my peace of mind. Reliability and safety over performance will be preferred.

I cannot comment about FZ25, as I haven't ridden it yet.

In that case FZ25 is your best bet, delivers good power at low RPM. If you don't mind 150cc, you can consider Gixer or Hornet - they are best offerings in that category and I think Gixer might be more nimble and fun to ride.

I currently ride a 150cc bike. So, Gixxer/Hornet won't qualify as an upgrade.
Yeah, FZ25 is good, but three things are keeping me away from considering it. Headlights, console and ABS.

                Hi,

Considering your requirements, back pain issue, and need for ABS.

Just blindly get the Apache 200 ABS. It has superb ride quality and will absorb most bumps, hence it will be a relief for your back. It also has nice performance and is a jack of all trades with good reliability.

If FZ25 had ABS that would undoubtedly be better buy for you, since it has a better pillion seat.

Yes new r15 v3 is undoubtedly the new king in this segment but lack of ABS and small pillion seat makes it the least recommendable here.

If willing to extend budget why not check Dominar 400 ABS too. It has nice wide seats for both rider and pillion too. The Only Bajaj I recommend to anyone.

                Cheers!

Dominar would set me back by around ₹1,75,000, i.e. 50k over the RTR 200. Even if I can wait a bit more longer and stretch my budget, I'm not sure whether it will be a good decision. Mainly because of two reasons:
                  1. As most of the riding will be in the city limits, I have doubts regarding how maneuverable it will be since, it weighs around 182 kgs.
                  2. Cost of ownership/running: Bigger displacement will lead to bigger hole in the pocket.

Maybe, Dominar owners can shed some light over my concerns, that would be great.

If I can have it my way, my pick will always be Duke 390, for the sheer joy of riding experience it offers and the excellent VFM machine it is. Alas! Money matters.

Well, Dominar is still an irresistible package. The idea always lurks at the back of my mind to go for it.

So, things have become a bit clearer.
It has boiled down to Apache RTR 200 ABS and Dominar*.

*Thanks to you for suggesting Dominar.

Re: Help me choose bikes within the price bracket of 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh.

As a owner of R15V2 for the past 4 years, I would advise you to stay away from any versions of R15, if you have back pains. The aggressive racing posture will worsen the condition. The V2 was expensive as it is and now the 3rd version is even more expensive than the V2 and still misses out on ABS. I wouldn't advice anyone to go for it unless he has his heart and mind set to. There are other much more powerful, and good value for money products available now.

Your best bet would be the top end RTR200. Checks out all your boxes. yes it misses out on 6th gear but it doesn't make any difference if you are a city rider and rarely go on the highways. And even if you go on the highway, the 5 speed gear box means that you will be in power band all the time for quick overtakes and speed bursts.

The NS has its fair share of pros and cons. Its up to you if you can live with cons to avail the pros. Not a bad bike though, and Bajaj is constantly improving.

The FZ25 can also be considered, but again the lack of ABS on a bike that can do triple digit speeds in a matter of seconds is not welcome. Obviously you get all the reliability and niggle free ownership in the world being a Jap.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

                      Your thoughts about the Dominar?
As it has one of the most comfortable seats for both, rider and pillion, in the segment.

Dominar, on its own is a very good and capable bike. But does not suits your requirements. allow me to explain.

As you said you are going to use the bike in city for most of the time and also that you are not a speed freak, but a sedate rider. Now Dominar purpose built for people who want to cover long distance in short time, it can do over 160 kmph and do it safely. According to me it would be an overkill to buy such a powerful bike just for city commuting. You won't even use half of its power. Dominar is also quite heavy, makes it hard to maneuver in city traffic. Being a 400c engine and riding it in city will hardly give you 30kmpl which will be a burden on the pocket.

So buying a Dominar will give you all the cons of a heavy duty tourer (less mileage, heavy in traffic jams, expensive service and maintenance) and you wont need any of the benefits provided by it (safely doing triple digit speeds, engine not stressing on long tours, wind last not felt on highways due to weight).

If rider and pillion comfort are your priorities, a RTR200 or a FZ25 will be the best option.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Yes, mileage and maneuverability were factors that I was considering as well.
As it would burn a bigger hole in the pocket compared to the RTR.

RTR seems like a logical option here, giving best of both the world.

Thanks a lot for clearing out things.

                          So,

                          RTR 200 ABS it is!

Yes, I have gone through the threads of the NS, Dominar and RTR extensively. Dominar has the least niggles, coming in next is RTR, while the NS thread is reeling with issues of owners.
I have ridden RTR, was mighty pleased with the smoothness of the engine.

                              Thanks again!
