You have been making a lot of sense good sir
Thanks for bringing up all the good points here.

After sale service depends on your dealer more than the brand manufacturing these motorcycles, which is where Mahindra fails again as the service network is very small.

Want to tour difficult places and remote villages with complete peace of mind ? Get a simpler motorcycle or learn about your motorcycle, don't rely on service centers. This is where Bajaj scores, parts availability is robust.

    Goodluck.
Hi Parth, Let me first thank you for inputs and experiences which you shared here. I might contradict with you in the later part of this post, but I do not mean any offense by it at all. I agree with you on the issue of parts availability and that had been one of my major concern as well. I had the same feeling and hence I started my search with Hero Xpulse only but even after multiple test rides I wasnt entirely convinced.
In my 7 years of experience with Bajaj Avenger I have realized that -
    1. There were instances when I could not get even a clutch wire replacement for my bike. A lot of road side mechanics did not have the right tools to even remove the rear wheel.
    2. Living in bangalore, within reach of multiple service centers, they were still unable to resolve a lot of issues I had with my bike. Not just the service centers, but couple of local mechanics who claim to service avengers, left those issues unresolved and I finally learnt to live with them as I did not have time and patience to deal with everything.

I am not saying that after sales service is not something to consider at all, but there are times when we count on it and it fails us royally. If that becomes the base reason for sale, then we will never get good quality products from emerging/foreign manufacturers. If a product is crappy, then we have all the rights to blast it, but as customers we are also avoiding a lot of interesting quality products which just get lost in dust as we want everything from it and the manufacturer.

I am still struggling with the thoughts of shelling out 2.5L for a Dominar (which isnt perfect either) or 2.4L+ for a Himalayan. At some level I know that if i opt for Jawa, I would be signing up for almost a prototype product but I have a feeling that this company is here to stay (esp looking at the customer response) but with Mojo I am afraid that Mahindra might pull the plug on it, even if i feel that its a very good product.

Thanks a lot you both. I thought I would take a test ride of Dominar at showroom first before approaching these people, but found that Dominar is not for me.
            - Aggressive seating posture (for me)
            - Heavy front (people say you get used to of it, but this is something I wouldnt want to get involved with)
            - Long turning radius would make things difficult in city
            - Found it very powerful which translates to sudden jerks at times when you push the throttle a bit.

Anyways, I am back to my confused state of mind. With this, I even thought of trying Intruder 150 (just because i loved that smoothness of Gixxer) and after visting 3 of their showrooms I couldnt find one for TD. I was told that its not a very popular model and hence they dont have test ride vehicles, which brought me back to similar ASS issues which I would face if I pick a Jawa or Mojo.

Get P220/NS200/Apache 200 4V. More prevalent so spares and service is available. If you want to go slightly different - R15/FZ25. Even Yammies will be expensive to maintain and other options are even more so. These suggestions are considering you are of middle class thinking.

Definitely middle class thinking here. Thats why I am not satisfied with the ones which fall into my budget and the ones I am ok with, need me to stretch it. When I stretch my budget and start thinking from that perspective, I realize that even these expensive ones arent without huge compromises.
For example, I liked Mojo which is around 2.4L (+ 20k for other must have accessories) but then after sales service scares me. So as an alternate, I try Dominar (2.5L) but I dont find it comfortable. So as another alternate I think of Himalayan (2.4L) but the ownership experience section talks about a lot of product issues even if the ASS is pretty good for RE.
And after taking test rides of these bikes, when I go back and redo a test ride of a cheaper bike, I dont enjoy it much.
I know I know, a lot of BS going on in my head
That is why i have finally decided on renting couple of these bikes for 3-4 hours this weekend and then go for whatever I enjoy the most. Enough of dilly-dallying. Cant research anymore, which is not resulting in any new data anyways.

Definitely, it's so confusing to decide on one bike. I was in a similar dilemma last year. Your approach is good too to TR for a longer period.

I would only suggest one thing, since you mentioned long rides, I'd suggest you keep atleast 10% budget for riding gear too. Atleast get a good helmet, gloves, jacket and knee guards. This goes a long way to ensure your safety. For shoes, you can get riding shoes or if you want to go cheaper, get good safety shoes. I myself am using JCB Earthmover, which cost 1200-1500 and in my last crash, they made sure the only part of my body without any ache was my feet (I wasn't wearing other gear at the time). If you want something to better protect ankle, JCB Excavator is the option for 200-300 more.

So far, I only got good helmet and gloves but have not invested in jacket, knee guards and shoes. I have been using regular jackets (for wind/weather protection) for close to 10 years and normal woodland shoes (thinking that they are tough so should handle any terrain), but I guess its time to invest in the gear too.
Thanks for those suggestions man. Really appreciate it.

Bro, I too was using Woodland shoes thinking same but my new Woodland pair got effed in an accident, and sprained my ankle. That was when I went with the safety shoes, and in next crash it did save my foot.

Riding jackets have Armor protection for safety during crash, same goes for pants or knee guards. And they are made of abrasion resistant materials. You can find more info on the gear thread, where you can ask for suggestions and get more info and price etc.

                            Re: Long Ride with Mileage

After a lot of thoughts, discussions and pros-n-cons spreadsheets I have finalized on MOJO. I have booked it at NAFS Motors, Bangalore today. Price is approx 2.42 lakhs on road and I was told that it should be delivered in 1st or 2nd week of Jan.
I would have loved it if they had thrown in the luggage mount or atleast a crash guard but they insisted that they don't get make much on MOJO anyways so negotiations were not useful at all.
BTW, I happened to meet their GM (i totally forgot the name) and had a lot of discussions with him about it. When asked for future of this bike, he said that he can't promise anything for 5-10 years but they have a vision for April 2020 and April 2022 (for govt norms) and the bike is definitely gonna make it till then. Also he mentioned that even if they stop MOJO completely, even then they will provide spares for atleast 7 years. That's something which instilled some confidence for its sales and services in my mind and I finalized it then and there.

Anyways, thanks a lot you all for patiently responding to my queries and your inputs. I genuinely appreciate the help 😊

                              Re: Long Ride with Mileage

The dealer quotation i received for Mojo 2019 ABS has 11.9k marked for Insurance (1 year comprehensive + 5 year 3rd party).
However when I checked Policybazaar website I could see similar packages starting from 6.5k. Is it something I should try to negotiate with the dealer?
I am especially apprehensive of negotiating about it with my dealer as there are very few service stations available for Mojo in Bangalore itself, and sometimes the financial conversations end up in strained relationships.
