    Sadly I don't know any mechanics who would accompany me, though I would be taking a friend who might be able to help. Also I have gone over some posts here on xBhp about checking for faults in second hand bikes.

        Now I wouldn't have even have given a thought to second hand bikes if it wasn't for the fact that I'm gonna use the bike for 2 years, after that I will be moving abroad for higher studies. So something with a good resale value will be helpful (recently my friend sold of his 1 year used pulsar for 30k for which he had purchased for 34k)

        Also strangely enough most of the people around me comment that I'm a very tall to own a 125cc bike as I would look weird on them. Personally I don't find much of a difference when I'm driving a 125cc or 150cc bike. SO just to make things clear are there some kind of comforts that most 150cc bikes give to aid tall people?
        I hope you have had a test ride. The Gladiator is quite a big bike for it's cc. Stands taller than most 150-160cc bikes.
        I am 6 feet. And the Gladiator feels like it's made for me. Also I would still implore you to consider the Unicorn or it's cousins the Hunk and the Extreme. It's a one off purchase so you might as well buy something that is a bit more powerful. Good luck with your purchase.

          I would say go for a second hand bike. Suppose you get a bike for 30k and you get a lemon and spend 10k to overhaul the bike. After 2 years if you lose 10k in resale value thats 20k lost in total.

          This is the worst case (Assuming that you buy a lemon and you have very poor bargaining skills). So if you manage a semi-decent bike then its going to be better than getting a new one from a economical stand point.

            My advice: Buy a 03/04 Bajaj Pulsar 180 DTS-i or a 150 but see that its a Dts-i. You'll get 1 for anything between 25-35K max. Spend the rest on overhaul and service, new tyres and mags. Here is get an almost new ride thats relatively cheap on spares and maint. Since you want it for arnd 2-3 yrs, i see that option good. I have done it but the difference is that mines a classic. Good luck with watever you decide.......

              IMO go for an RX. Nothing like it!! There will be no engine problems as the 2 - stroke engine doesn't have valves : Less moving parts = less maintainance. Moreover, it is absolute fun to ride around in city (Telling from my personal experience..... my hostel roomie bought a second hand RX100 for 2 yrs use). I've ridden it a lot for two yrs.
              P.S.: my friend still hasn't sold it after completion of college .... he's still totally hooked on to it.

                Any used bike need a repair to bring it to our own comforts,
                Add 3-5K for your budget for any used bike for repairs

                I would suggest for a Unicorn or a Stunner, Else get a Rx135 (5 Speed if possible)
                As mentioned earlier in this thread most of the Bajaj (Pulsars) would be in a very bad shape.

                  I've test ridden all 125cc segment bikes and I really felt that Gladiator is the one to go for in this segment.

                  I'm already prepared to invest about 4-5k more into the bike.

                  Rx135 are very rare to find i.e. in good conditon. Same goes for Unicorn , if somebody can tell me where to look for used bike shops in pune (other than rasta peth) it would be very helpful.

                  Also why is that everyone saying that pulsar would be beaten up? (sorry for my lack of knowledge in these things)

                    I'm in a little bit of a rut. I'm about to buy my first bike and I have been advised a lot of options which have confused me a lot. Now my budget doesn't allow me to go beyond a Yamaha Gladiator but some of my friends have advised me to go for a second hand 150cc bike.

                    So what shall it be a new gladiator or second hand 150/180cc bike?

                    I went to rasta peth in pune to check out the used bike shops and I saw a lot of pulsars. At 45k I found some pulsar 180cc models of 2007 make with around 14k to 25k mileage on them. I even saw an Avenger at 48k with 35k mileage. Should I go for these?

                    Help please
                    Hi man dont even think of buyin a bike frm Rasta peth........have been livin in Pune all my life..........donno abt all the mechanics but most of them will change the parts and sell it to you.......
                    If U are buyin a second hand bike always better to buy if frm someone you know....

                      Considering the fact that you will be using it only for two years, I would say buy a totally conked RX and then restore it. RX restoration shouldnt be too much of a problem in a city like Pune.

                      You can find RXs in lousy condition for 10-12k. Add 10-15k(Max) for restoration and for 25k you wil have a fun reliable bike. Lets see if at all you sell it when you go abroad

                        I was talking about the worst case scenario. If you buy a second hand bike in worst condition and spend some money in overhauling engine, suspension etc, after 2 years the depreciation would be lesser than buying a first hand and selling it after 2 years.

                          i agree with the person above me...see if you go and buy a new bike...you surely will have to face a lot of depriciation..!...it;'s obvious that you won;'t get a very good deal at the end of 2 years...firstly, because..you HAVE TO sell your bike neway and after 2 years you won't have any time to wait for a better offer..!...because you are rushing out///...
                          secondly, if you go for a second hand pulsar 150\180...you surely, would end up getting a better re-sale value...and a better looking bike..
                          so, go hunt for a second hand pulsar in a good condition..!...
                          all the best..!..

                            You should really have a keen look at the discover 135. Because not only me, many members on XBHP feel that the gladiator is too over rated a bike and the discover is the most under-estimated 1. Check out the ownership threads and the picture will become clearer. As for 2nd hand.. i suggest you not to.

                            Lets play some numbers:

                            P150 DTSi (UG2) = 13 BHP @8500
                            Discover 135 = 13.1 BHP @ 8500
                            Gladiator = 10.8 BHP @ 7500
                            Stunner = 11 BHP @ 8000
                            Honda Unicorn(New) = 13.3 BHP @ 8000
                            Advice is a form of nostalgia.
