  • RTR 180 or R15 (Used)..

    Hello to fellow Xbhpians...
I am in trouble selecting my first bike...
I am a college student, daily commute of about 16-20km..my needs from the bike is performance and handling(nothing else..no fuel efficiency, reliability etc.).My budget is around 75-80k(can't stretch it more else it'll break)..so i was bloody sure(about a week ago) to go and final the RTR 180.Took the testride and was mighty impressed by its performance and handling, everything is just amazing about the bike and there's nothing big to complain or worry about.

Now here comes the problem. One of my friends owns the R15.I know she's the best thing money can buy today but i never gave it a second thought as it's simply out of my 5 digit budget figure. And so coming back to the problem-It started today as i had a chance to thrash my friend's bike on the long stretches and in crawling city traffic. And i wish not to tell how good the bike is as i know all of you who have ridden the machine must be knowing why my heart thumps so loud?....I never felt any machine as easy as this one.It reminded me of my school days with Activas and Kine.Very forgivin' and easy.Literally, flows with you...and its power, handling and revvy motor made me go nuts over the flyovers and expressway.Never enjoyed any ride like this one..

So by now you could have guessed what the 'Problem' is??..
I asked one of the Yamaha dealers if they have any used bike with them. And they told me that one of their customers is selling his R15 for 75-8OK.The bike has done a mere 4000km in 7 months of ownership period...I got a bit tempted at the proposal and therefore, thought of putting this question to Xbhpians...

I know RTR180 compared to the R15 is not a bad deal either. It looks good, has meaty performance(drag timings are even better) and is a very good handler and a rider's delight and then again,a new is always a better bet than the used one. So,right now i am completely confused about which one to go for? New or used ?...simply can't ignore the R15 as it left all us bikers drooling just after the launch...please help me out of this 'Problem'...

And please please don't suggest me to raise my budget to 1 lac and get a brand new R15..simply can't afford!!...And other brands or bike too...just these two..
If you ride like there's no tomorrow...worry not there won't be!

With a budget of 80k why not look at the 220 carb too? Take a testride.

Between the two I would bargain hard try and reduce the price a bit and get the r15. Of course there is a risk involved in getting a used bike and a used bike cannot give you the feel of a new bike.

Generally if you keep your bike for a long time getting a new one is good.

I would anyday go for a New bike , though if you know that r15 has not been abused or crashed then you can go for it .

Also take a Test ride of the new P220 , its in your budget

There is always a risk with second hand bikes. You can try dig up info from this guy as to why he is selling the R15. That is a lot of depreciation for a seven month old bike. Try to get your favorite mechanic check up on the bike before buying it. If he gives a go ahead, then I don't see why not to go for the R15 as it definitely is a potent machine.

As I see, you like revvy bikes and both your options seem to be corner carving light weight machines. So I am guessing you would not like the P220. Therefore I would not recommend it to you, though it too is a very good bike.

Well the guy who gave me this offer is the mechanic in Yamaha. He said the guy(who's selling the bike) is a bike freak and he has about 12-13 bikes in his garage. And now he plans to get the new yamaha fazer so is selling his r15.He assured me of bike's good condition and asked me to come for the testride tomorrow. He even said that the owner hardly rides the r15.It's his brother who takes the bike sometimes ...otherwise it's hardly used..

and ya you guessed it right i love revvy motor....

                  dont preffer IInd hand

against any bike in the market,if its a 2nd hand i would always preffer a 1st hand bike.
Owning an R15 is a great feeling but the looks only matter in the beginning...u get used to it later on and try to exploit the actual thing that values the bike ..the engine. and for a 2nd hand tahts risky.
Preffer a 1st hand ...moreover since its your 1st bike...you'll be taming it as per your own prefference
and with the RTR 180 you can also look at the 220dtsi. personally the I would preffer the RTR180. More revving engine, petal discs give a more cool look. Looks awsome in white color. blue backlite consol adds the the extra oomh
I think its got it all.. but again...listen to all do what you want.
make your own decision....and dont let anything else force you
Enjoy the ride when you get it
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

Sorry about that somehow missed it.

From your post it seems like the owner is filthy rich. But again dont trust whatever the yamaha mechanics tell you. Anyway in case hes filthy rich try and bargain hard he wont probably care about a 5k lost in the deal

A r15 when bought first hand itself is VFM for the features it offers so this is obvious value. But its just that you have to be ready to take the risk.

In my case,i am sure it's not the looks that attracting me towards the bike. I have been looking at it for almost an year and there's no two ways about it that it looks gorgeous and is a crowd-puller.As i rode the bike for the first time and i've explained each and everything about my experience with it.Be it handling, cruising at speeds over 100kmph,cornering and everything for that matter is just phenomenal...

Yamaha engines are pretty good a 7 month not so much used bike should be nearly as good as new. But i think the question should be more on terms of what you like on a bike.

Try both the bikes on verity of conditions you use it in you might find a better fit.

The RTR has much better torque(than R15) all around so will be better to drive at low speeds. But R15 is pretty much un-catchable after 110 kmph.

In terms of long term ownership the RTR will be about half the price of R15 in terms of maintainance.

As mentioned above new Bike would always be a better option,
Take a Test Drive of new P220 / Else go for a new R15
Used R15 >> recommended if it was not driven harsh and accident free.
Check all its service records and overall condition including papers

Ahaan!!...you've got a point to mention..
Actually, these are the only questions that are eating my brain. The RTR has power throughout the rev range whereas power comes bursting in after 6-7k in the R15...both have their own pros and cons. For the top whack and highway runs,i know R15 is a clear winner but then again, it's not always that i'll drive down highways or expressway on my way back home.In short, both are meant for spirited riding ..so let this be a draw...

Now coming to the service and maintainance part, i think it's a bit of bother in the R15 case.As the bike is old and hence i do not know how the previous owner used it.So this goes in TVS favour..

Comes the major part now...my simple question is- Do you people feel that the RTR is as good a handler as the R15????..i know TVS rubber sucks but if i go for the RTR i am sure i'll change them after 2000-3000 km runs...(a p220 front and a r15 rear is the perfect combo for the rtr180-i heard someone sayin this in the forum before )...
