  • Going for the R15 ?

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a bike and am keen on the R15. After owning a Fiero & Yezdi and having considered buying the TBird for a long time, the looks of the R15 got me interested in sportsbike models. I have some questions/issues and hoping you people can address them.

    1) Hows the R15 as a city bike ? I know its made for the tracks but not all of us will get on the track.

    2) Is the FZ16/FZ-S (my alternate choice ) any different from the 150cc bikes of last gen (pulsar/cbz/fiero) ?

    3) What accessories/add-ons are recommended ? (brighter lights ? horn ? crash bungs ?)

    4) Is the sporty riding position easy to get used to ?
I took a impulsive test ride in shorts & sandals and was quite uncomfortable. I also felt the tank pressed into by testicles!!! I will be taking another test ride with proper boots and jeans though.

    5) How easy is it to handle the R15 in Bangalore traffic ? We won't be leaning a lot in slow Bangalore traffic, so easy turning at low speeds is important.

    6) I'm buying it in Bangalore. I will mostly go to Perfect Riders or Msp Motoworld. Any issues/complaints against any of them in the past ?
Any deals/discounts to be aware of from any dealer in Bangalore ?

Since I am a rookie biker! pardon me if my questions seem silly.

I have owned a Fiero F2 too&still owning it. I am also crazy about faired bikes.

I have never been on the track. R15 performs brilliantly in city, since it is made for the track it is all the easier to flick it around in city. Only thing is the mirrors extend out a bit, you'll learn to gauge the gap while cutting it around in traffic soon. I handle it in heavy traffic like I can handle no other bike, it is very light, grippy&confidence inspiring compared to other bikes.

      2) Is the FZ16/FZ-S (my alternate choice ) any different from the 150cc bikes of last gen (pulsar/cbz/fiero) ?
Technology is more or less the same. These 150cc bikes are still carburetted&air cooled. Power&build quality have improved though.
R15 is a leader in this aspect-it has the latest tech one can expect. For more details on liquid cooling, fuel injection, diasil cylinder, etc.please visit the official website.

      3) What accessories/add-ons are recommended ? (brighter lights ? horn ? crash bungs ?)
Stock headlamps are not great but livable with. HID is an option which quite a few have installed, please check the ownership thread for more details.
Crash bobbins&tyre hugger would have been a welcome addition, but sadly Yamaha does not provide. You can get aftermarket parts fitted if you don't mind drilling&welding.
Yamaha's official accessories are purely cosmetic.

      4) Is the sporty riding position easy to get used to ?
Yes, it should not take more than a few heavy traffic rides to get used to!

      5) How easy is it to handle the R15 in Bangalore traffic ? We won't be leaning a lot in slow Bangalore traffic, so easy turning at low speeds is important.
It is fine in traffic too, only sometimes in long bumper-to-bumper crawling jams, the heat from the engine tends to get to your legs, but cools off by the time you reach the next signal. It is liquid cooled (coolant is supplied to the engine like in cars)&has a radiator fan also for cooling.

Remaining things Bangy owners can chip in.
      Quench my thirst with gasoline!

I think Sarvajit has answered all your questions..
However, adding my bit (in order of your questions):

        1) I have never taken my R15 to the tracks, but its a phenomenal bike even for city use. Its definitely built for the streets, but not for stop-go traffic! Please remember, the R15 ain't a commuter bike..

        2) Nothing different, apart from the looks IMO.

        3) You might want to get a good replacement for the headlights. Some members here are using HIDs. I have no issues with the horns, simply coz I hardly use them.

        4) Will take you a couple of hundred KMs getting used to the sporty riding posture. Wrist pains might occur during this getting-used-to phase. But later, nothing else will do..

        5) Its a piece of cake to ride it in traffic. Totally flickablr feather-light bike.. Not great for tunneling between those narrow spaces though, thanks to the mirrors & full fairing..

        6) I'd recommend Perfect Riders! I know the owner & the sales guys very well. PM me & maybe I can help you with the booking & good service (no freebies for anyone, strictly per YAMAHA rules).

& yeah, none of your questions are silly, so chill!
        Cheers!

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

                      @TnT
looks like the dealer 3 bikes (red, blue, black) in stock.
He said for one of these it'll be delivered in 10 days.

ok. It's been two weeks today since I booked my R15 here. They tell me not to get my hopes up for another week at least. Which color do you think you will go for?

I really liked yellow, Looks very sporty but my personal favorite is the Sunset red.The colour scheme almost looks like the Kenny Roberts Marlboro Yamaha back from the 90s

                              Another question guys...

What kind of safety gear do you riders wear (in city commute) ?
Helmet obviously, but what about gloves ?
boots ? not practical to look like a stormtrooper in office!
