I have friends with similar or shorter heights and they ride
    - Avenger
    - Karizma

So it does not depend much on height. Though Avenger is most suited, FZ and RTR are also very comfortable and flickable bikes and both these bike can give you arnd 40 mileage. Can't comment much on R15.

In any case almost all bikes out there have saddle height 79cms, then it comes on width of set that can differ a bit.

modding the seat - by cutting down the foam inside, also helps to a great extent

My main purpose of buying the bike is to enjoy some fresh air once in a while and not for driving to work/college.

I can at the most stretch my budget to 1.20 lacs.

I don't care about the pillion rider!

Mileage, well anything above 40 is good.

I will not be a speed racer. Too many accidents are associated with my friends/relatives. I would love a bike which is comfortable and stable to ride on. That doesn't mean that I would buy a bullet or a moped. I want a bike which looks cool and drives well.
If you can spend 1.20L then i'd suggest you get the R15. Nothing like it and you will not repent. Even the FZ16 will suit you height. While we all would love it but i am not sure about the Ninja debuting at 1.5L. It would be almost a lakh dearer i.e. 2.5L. Lets just wait and watch, it's only 3 days to launch.

I have heard that many people are getting back pains after riding the r15 and that FZ16 has a more comfortable ride. Is it true?

I don't think it would be much of a problem. There are many people here who use the r15 extensively for touring. It'll be fine once you get used to it. Anyways you can test ride both the r15 and fz and decide. You can even think of Fazer. It looks awesome and is quite comfy.

About the fazer, why don't people talk about it that much? They go gaga over r15 and fz16, but I don't hear about the fazer often and it doesn't win awards. What's the reason?

The seating position of the R15 is a bit sporty so if you are coming from commuter bikes you will take some time to adjust to the seating position. After the intial pain, your body will adjust to the sporty position & all will be fine. A lot of riders here use the R15 for touring extensively.

About the Fazer, well currently it's got a 55 days waiting period so that should be enough to give you an idea how well it is doing.

I think the r15 would be best, because infact it looks better in proportion with short riders. You know the whole SBK look etc.

Thats because you can get a P220 for the same price. Here everything has to be paisa vasool.

I guess it's more than that.

R15 and FZ16 are again at premium over other bikes but they have some justification for their price tags -- that's why they are selling. But Fazer @ 83.5k OTR in Bangalore while we could get(at the time of discount) FZ @ 72.5 -- does that make any sense? 11k for fairing, dual horn(AFAIK) and changed seating posture.
Moreover FZ and R15 were totally new bikes and brought some of the latest things in the segment while Fazer is just a make over of FZ.

Stick to your guns and get a bike mate. Try telling your parents that the bikes you are looking at at highly advanced machiones with great safety features and stuff. Well about your querry the R15 is a replica of the famed YAMAHA R series which is great if you re into the moto GP style riding of leaning deep into corners and looks like a GP bike.

Whereas the FZ series is awesome on city streets with ample torque and stabilty to guide to traffic gridlocks with ease. They re both winners. If you re nt not looking at riding like a speed demon all the time and need a bike with good stability go for the FZ.
